Would you review the first 26 minutes of a movie or even any other episode of TV?
This isn't a formal review. I am posting impressions on a message board.

I liked the first twenty-six minutes of The Wire. Or Chinatown. Or a bunch of other stuff that I consider to be good, and I feel like someone could watch those sections of any piece and have something worthwhile to say about what they watched.

All the background art budget went into the sweat animation, surely.

Well I imagine they are completely separate artists and budgets! Most of the actual character animation looked average of above average, for a SHAFT show, with the best cuts being fanserivce related. Other studios have very specific background artists or, more commonly, they use the talents of company that specialises in producing background art because it's clearly a completely different skillset to animation (unless you're an animator that doest that as well).

Hey guys and gals. I'm hoping to get into a bit more anime this year and I'd like some recommendations. Preferably I'd like movies/ series that are only one or two seasons long.

I've already seen quite a few movies like Ponyo, Totoro, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (loved it), Perfect Blue, Spirited Away etc.
My fave series are Evangelion (loved the action and story but not sure about Rebuild) and Death Note (again, great story). I'm a few episodes into Fruits Basket and I'm liking it so far.
I did buy Vandread but I didn't really like it much (story didn't sparkle with me and the cgi in it was odd).

So yeah I was just after something new, preferably with a good story and a bit of action.
Thanks in advance :)

If you liked Death Note, I would recommend Kaiji. Has the same level of tension, though the story is wildly different. More about mind games and stuff like that.

This sounds suspiciously like one of those pairing names that shippers create.

"JexUnator" almost sounds like some kind of Jexhius Terminator designed to eliminate cajunator from the top spot. I can already hear the late Don LaFontaine doing the voice over for a movie promo.

---

He used to reign supreme at the top of the wall where no one could dare touch him.

but then one day the junior cajunator appeared...

It was a posting blitz the likes of which had never been seen before, leaving him beaten and broken.

Now he's returned...

to terminate the one at the top and take back his rightful spot.

He is...The JexUnator!

CODE: BREAKER 13 END
I'd read the manga to find out but I've heard some truly terrible things about it. Now all I can do is hope this gets the second season it deserves.

It won't. Just read the manga. It's not THAT much worse than the show. If anything, it's even more ridiculous. Besides, the best arc is the one after Hitomi.

This is really quite unfortunate because even ex-SHAFT people can create a show which uses a number of visual techniques from SHAFT's catalogue of shows but also embraces how important background art is in the overall composition of the image:

It's not like Dusk Maiden was a particularly expensive show, either. SHAFT are just clearly happy enough to crank out shit in-house background art because it's cheap and quick but I feel like it damages a number of scenes because of how shoddy everything appears.
There are Dusk Maiden art guys working on Sasami-san@Ganbaranai. I'll be interested to see what happens with that show.

Hey, there are only so many packets of ramen to go around...

Or maybe they just don't care about the cheap looking background art. I'll admit, the "style" used to try to cover up the bland looking backgrounds didn't really work in the two scenes in this 'episode'.

Well, it's impossible to judge really. A test would be to watch something you've never seen before and just stop at 26 minutes to see if you feel you can make an impression of the subject.

Of course, David Simon already hates the fact that people review television in an episode by episode basis, so I can only imagine what he would do if people started reviewing episodes in an act by act basis. lol

Truer words etc

Can't tell if I enjoyed this episode or not. I mean, I like the firefighter/daughter angle but the drama felt kinda forced as I had no emotional attachment to either.

He would hate the manga thread, then, where people rate the chapters every week with a grade from A to F.

I will say that this episode pays off in a very awesome way. I'll leave you to discover how though. lol

What if people started rating panels? lol

I'll keep waiting for more anime. I'll rather not have anything at all than to read a bad manga with awful artwork. I'm not even interested in the story if the anime staff aren't handling it honestly. They make better fights than the manga, and it art actually looks good with proper effects animation and good direction. The manga is just awful.

Nice writeup on stuff from 2012, good read and I agree with most of it. You guys should check it out.

anohana is designed mostly for breaking hearts. A drama about five friends and the girl whose death shattered their lives, it's an aching look at growing up and growing apart and a periodically devastating examination of grief and grieving. I gave it the top spot for its embarrassment of memorable characters and also the indelible mark it leaves on the heart.
Well said

AnoHana is a show with huge heart but terrible execution.
Its charming enough to work, but damn it could have been so much better.

At least it gave us this:

Kimi to natsu no owari shourai no yume
Ookina kibou wasurenai
Juu nen go no hachigatsu
Mata deaeru no wo shinjite
Saikou no omoide wo...

Maybe he should make movies then!
He did threaten to quit TV after Treme. :p

Koko from Jormungand for character of the year? What even. Should have been Kirito from SAO, someone thats actually memorable and good.

Why are they obsessed with Chu2byo?

Best English Dub Performance – Male: Kent Williams as Momoko, Shangri-La (Runner-Up: Ian Sinclair as Ryner Lute, The Legend of the Legendary Heroes)

Legendary Heroes was a good dub, one of my favorite funi purchases.

Yeah, I read Code Breaker weekly and the art is as awful as ever (COOL POSES EVERYWHERE). And the beginning was at least bloody because now it's ultra shonen: no one dies, love conquers all...etc.

Only reason I am following it is Heike. I can't get enough of his trolling.

KAMI SAMA HAJIMEMASHITA - 13

The most intresting thing to note in this whole ordeal is that despite the classic highschool girl fears nanami has ( toward love ) she is a pretty great girl..
She realised what she had to do by herself.. No need for a slap , a declaration or a phone call discussion. that alone put nanmi way high in my top 10 of shojo heroines.
Shojo heroines don't have to do everything by themselves ..but actually realising that some things are wrong and just saying .." well better try for real rather than lose everything" is also a plus ... but reaching that conclusion on their own ? PRICELESS !

Gonna get to the manga to see if this trend continues ...

I actually forgot they had turned this into an anime. The manga, itself, is fun as hell. Definitely pick it up.

Wait, what the fuck is that writer saying about the fanbase of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure?

For Fall 2012, the hiveminds have determined you must like JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Chuunibyou. If you don’t include them in your top 3, you may as well just shut down your blog now. Include an intellectual show as well, to show that you is so smarts.
Spoiler:

You should rank them as follows: the most popular show, then the most intellectual show, then the show with the worst fanbase.

1. Chuunibyou Demo Koi Ga Shitanai!

2. Shinsekai Yori

3. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
