So...this means that more people attended Deadpool US opening weekend, right, seeing as though BvS did 40% of its opening gross in 3D?

350mil domestic, 800mil worldwide is just barely meeting expectations.

Having a Batman v Superman movie essentially just run in place isn't what Warners was hoping for. They're not gonna lose their shirt on this, obviously, but the amount of noise and fury this film is spinning off while more or less just standing in the same spot Man of Steel stood? That's not good. It's not a failure. It's not disaster. But it's not really a victory, either.

Also, look at those Cloverfield holds! That's good stuff.

Exactly what I got out of this. While not a bomba, it is a disappointment for the people at WB.

At the theater right now to watch BvS. Starts in 15 minutes.

Is it weird that every time I go see a movie, I have a tiny panic attack ever since the Colorado theater shooting?

so unless i have wrong info and nothing changes between now and then. justice league could make less then this. it has thor coming out 2 weeks before it and star wars like 3 or 4 weeks later

It's not a very positive result if it misses a billion considering the last two Batman movies both reached that milestone.

Especially considering Nolan did it without the 3D tax.

But on the other hand, it'll be the most successful March movie ever and further proves you don't need May/Summer to make a ~$billion

Try seeing a movie in the same theater where one of those shootings took place.

Agreed. I keep going back to MOS, but MOS had comp the next weekend with Monster uni 2 and WWZ. No way this does any more then 60%.

I see it doing 60%+.

Man of Steel's $116.6M opening only included $9M from midnights.

It's true Fri-Sun gross of $107.6M dropped 61.7% in its second weekend.

Making the assumption that BvS' $170M number isn't inflated a bit, the actual Fri-Sun Weekend portion works out to about $142M.

Let's be generous and say that its Fri-Sun portion has a 10% lighter drop than MoS in the face of less competition. That gives you $68.7M second weekend.

Throw the Thursday previews back in and next Sunday's report will say the film dropped 60%.

And I think that's being optimistic.

So is it possible the last Divergent movie just gets canceled or has filming already started?

Because they will have to slice the hell out of that budget to even have a hope of turning a profit on it. It will likely do even worse than this one

No, BvS sold about 4m more tickets than Deadpool:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&id=deadpool2016.htm&adjust_yr=1&p=.htm

(Not sure how well this is taking into account 3D vs 2D ticket prices though)

It doesn't. That feature is sort of useless for modern films.

edit: Deadpool's opening weekend IMAX take was the same as BvS' though. I am not really sure about other large formats.

I remember reading they drastically cut the budget for the next one. Don't know if they'll just decide to cancel instead though.

1b is a win only because of how bad the movie is. This is WB's biggest anything. It wouldn't be bigger if you added 10 other DC heroes in it.

The title of the movie says it all.

With Batman vs Superman in the title and promise of some JL angle the actual film could have been two hours f them sitting chatting and Batman and Superman slapping each other playfully and it would have opened strong. Brand recognition and genre guaranteed strong opening and time f year guaranteed WB some records (nice to see it proven again, after Deadpool, that more of the year can be used productively that peak periods).

But... with the reviews and divisive feedback the true measure of the film is going to be 2nd weekend onwards and longer term how well next JL movie does.

It did well, I'm sure WB is very relieved. That said it's not like an insanely impressive number either given what it could have been.

Snyder wasn't the problem. The writing was garbage. Terrio sucks.

Yes!!! I hope Batman v Superman ends up being superbly profitable. I love Zack Snyder. I haven't seen Batman v Superman yet but I've loved almost all of Zack Snyder's movies. His visual style is almost unmatched (Watchmen is a 10/10 for me). I just think it would be great for him to continue having a long and fruitful directing career and for this movie to just knock it out of the park in terms of sales. Just to stick it to all the people who were salivating over the potential schadenfreude regarding this movie.

"How does Zack Snyder keep getting work?"

"Could Zack Snyder be done????"

"Hah this trainwreck of the movie is simply hilarious"

"Look at that Rotten Tomato rating go!!!!"

"Fuck Zack Snyder! He killed my family, ran over my dog, he's personally funding Trump's entire campaign, and I'm pretty sure he is personally responsible for the Star War prequel trilogy!"

Attaboy WB, Zack Snyder.

I think you're being sarcastic with that last part, but judging by the reviews, the "problems" with the movie are that it's bloated, confusing, and not a bright and happy romp. Two (possibly all three) of those can be partially blamed on the writing and the editing (as well as the directing).

I think there are plenty of directors that could take a BvS film to 1B WW. Snyder doesn't make it past JL.

I actually LOVE looking at Snyder movies as well. They are almost always beautiful. The way his movies "look" has never been the problem. The writing / flow in them often have major issues. BvS fits the same mold. Its a gorgeous movie but there is still a hell of a lot of issues even though I still enjoyed it

So that's it, then. We're really getting Zack Snyder's Justice League in 18 months and there's nothing we can do about it.

giphy.gif

Now Snyder has done the set up stuff for his DC universe, even thought it was very poorly done (that fucking email, WTF was he thinking) maybe Justice League won't feel quite as messy. Snyder can make fun movies but is very hit or miss, hopefully he will learn from this and JL will be much better, finger crossed anyway.

See you guys after comic con when Zack Snyder unveils the teaser for Justice League and hall H goes crazy... completing the carnival of stupid.

The reviews prior to opening weekend don't mean shit. The Rotten Tomato rating tanked and yet people still came out in droves to see the movie.

Word of mouth is what is going to make or break Batman v Superman. Not reviews. Nobody gives a fuck about what movie critics say. People care what their friends, brothers, cousins, etc.. think of the movie. So what is really going to hurt or help this movie will be the word of mouth that percolates throughout the week. I don't think reviews will mean anything in the grand scheme of things.

It's going to drop and drop hard. Not getting good critical reviews is one thing but word of mouth in my circle of friends isn't very good, it got a muted reaction from the audience in the theater I went to, and it has a B cinema score (which isn't very good). Besides the hardcore DC fanbase not a lot of people are falling in love with Batman v Superman. And that spells doom for the greater DCEU as a whole especially for what I assume is going to be the bigger, more marketed Justice League movies.

Word of mouth is reviews.

My point is that it depends where the review is coming from. Is it coming from your close circle of friends and family members? People whose opinion you actually care about? Or is it coming from the movie critics that gave this movie a 20% or whatever on RottenTomatoes.com?

Critics crying in the corner cause they over estimate their influence on an IP focused industry. Critics review are important for unknown movies or new intellectual properties, not so much here, people love & know these characters and don't really need an overly pompous elitist to tell them if they should see it or not.

The worst thing that could had happened to this movie was indifference not attention, even if that attention was negative people learned that a new movie was out there and that's what matters the most and if you hate watch it WB still wins.
