Wkd BO 07•07-09•17 - Minions cede dominion over box office, Homecoming KING

I actually don't think Apes is doing more than $60M with that preview number. Only $900K more than Dawn after 3 years of early previews coming more into vogue isn't great, especially when Dawn's started at 10PM; I'm thinking $50-55M.

It does seem that Spider-Man is going to drop 60% this weekend. Irritating.

This guy FUCKS.

Spidey's gonna drop 55-60% yes?

Word of mouth on it is pretty good, but it doesn't seem to be catching like, say, Guardians 2 did.

Word? I'd argue the opposite just based on my (very limited) twitter feed. I thought Guardians 2 was being talked up, but nothing like on the level of Homecoming right now.

I feel like it's going to drop 60% if not a little more because, as I suspected, it doesn't appear to be expanding beyond the usual Marvel audience.

We'll see soon enough.

Ouch, it doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things since it's a very small market but Spidey just had his second worst opening ever in France. Tickets sold on the first day:

Spider-Man 3 : 804 354
Spider-Man 2 : 502 494
Spider-Man : 480 288

The Dark Knight Rises : 423 970
Avengers – L’Ère d’Ultron : 333 303
X-Men – L’affrontement final : 331 000
Iron Man 3 : 318 216
X-Men 2 : 310 592
Suicide Squad : 307 062
Avengers : 302 730
Captain America – Civil War : 288 662
Deadpool : 285 711
The Dark Knight : 253 858
The Amazing Spider-Man : 251 226
X-Men – Days of Future Past : 248 522
Wolverine – Le Combat de l’immortel : 236 127

SPIDER-MAN – HOMECOMING : 233 579

Les Gardiens de la Galaxie Vol. 2 : 232 682
Les Gardiens de la Galaxie : 231 384
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 : 225 381

It is the best opening for a superhero movie this year though.

How Sony/Marvel going to do a better Archangel then Fox?

I fucking hate wing powersets, but I love Homecoming Vulture

:(

I don't wanna talk about X-Men Apocalypse and what it did to Archangel.

Nevermind Apocalypse himself (for the record, it's not his powerset or anything like that, but I don't think they nailed his design all too well).

Man, imagine if UN office workers hadn't protested over a fictional greek character getting a honorary role that a fictional red bird had previously had. That would've really been good marketing for her and her message.

Well, Guardians 2 "only" has a 2.64 multiplier so I think Spidey is headed for something similar. I think 2.3-2.6x is going to be regular for well received CBM movies.

I'm not really surprised that the 6th Spider-Man movie since 2002 and the 3rd time we've seen Peter Parker in high school is only having a good run instead of a great run.

Worse horsemen ever, had more time standing around then they did actually fighting.

The ancient horsemen were cool

THOSE guys should've been the ones featured in the film.

Also had the best X-Men titles intro. I dug it.

Too bad it only set up my disappointment.

Yeah, I think in one of the other BO threads my reasoning for lowballing was something like "The primary emotion this film will engender if it's good will be relief, not excitement."

Relief is good. Restoring confidence is good. But it's also not the sort of fuel that rockets ticket sales.

Glad to see WW's success.

Sorry Spidey, can't rewatch ya this weekend. Gotta go apeshit instead!

Then next week is Dunkirk. I wonder how Spidey will hold these upcoming weeks.

WW hasn't come out there yet, or...?

It has already.

First day: 157 337 tickets sold.
It's at 1 998 928 now, should end up with Logan numbers (2 275 342) here when everything is said and done.
Not bad, not super good. But >2M is respectable for any superhero movie.

WW hasn't come out there yet, or...?

It opened with fairly low numbers, the DC characters don't rate much around here outside of Batman, but it's on track to pass Suicide Squad I think so the legs are solid. With 2 million tickets sold total, it's a very respectable number for a first entry. Also, films open on wednesdays here, so Spidey's numbers in July (when everyone is on vacation) aren't actually that great compared to what WW did a month ago when people were still working or at school.
Here's the rest of the list:

Man of Steel : 215 242
Les 4 Fantastiques (2005) : 210 404
Les 4 Fantastiques et le Surfeur d'Argent : 208 717
Thor – Le Monde des ténèbres : 204 882
Iron Man 2 : 204 491
Doctor Strange : 197 428
Batman v Superman – L'aube de la justice : 196 016
X-Men : 195 792
Iron Man : 186 781
Les 4 Fantastiques (2015) : 184 633
Hulk : 183 558
Batman : 181 737
X-Men Origins – Wolverine : 177 184
Logan : 172 409
X-Men – Apocalypse : 163 303
Wonder Woman : 157 337
X-Men – Le Commencement : 150 541
Thor : 149 381
Superman Returns : 146 007
Les Nouveaux Héros : 124 979
L'Incroyable Hulk : 116 770
Batman Begins : 111 820
Captain America – Le Soldat de l'Hiver : 110 798
Constantine : 104 702
Ant-Man : 102 010
Daredevil : 93 385
Kick-Ass 2 : 87 221
Blade II : 87 208
Green Lantern : 86 918
Ghost Rider : 86 356
Hellboy II – Les légions d'or maudites : 85 152
Captain America – First Avenger : 82 657
Hellboy : 78 157
Batman, le défi : 77 151
LEGO Batman – Le film : 74 867
Watchmen – Les Gardiens : 68 152
Catwoman : 57 217
Kick-Ass : 51 242

I think a lot of people looked at Homecoming as a good MCU movie that featured Spider-Man instead of a major Spider-Man movie. If that makes any sense.

Sony will benefit a lot because of Homecoming. I think people don't get how these things work. Spider-man 2 was great which got a lot of people in theater for Spider-man 3. For the trilogy, Spider-man 2 did just okay, not as good as 1 or 3. Homecoming will pay off big time after Infinity War when people flock to see it after all the great reviews/WOM from Homecoming and hopefully IW Part 1-2

oooOOOOOOH

(also, one of the major differences there is that it'd been 30 years since Return of the Jedi and 10 years since the last Star Wars movie)

(also ugh that poster)

Man the franchise didn't taper off, it cratered

At first I thought, 'It still has to be released in China', but that happened weeks ago. So if there are no more major territories for it to open in..., is it going to finish it's run with less than $600m worldwide?

I feel like there's something i'm missing here because if not..,

Yikes.
