correct about everything
arguing which is better, avatar or jurassic world, is not much different from arguing which is the best of the star wars prequels. different flavours of shit.

You jest but what if he's a dog and that's just how he feels, BronsonLee

What then

I'd be super impressed that a canine can post on NeoGAF

I don't like either movie but I can pretty easily show the difference between a James Cameron setpiece and a setpieces from anyone else

I can't believe someone would say JW was a better movie than Avatar.
To me, the enjoyment factor of both is about the same, however JW wins huge from being a massive 40 minutes shorter.

Mediocre movies that are two hours or less are one thing, those that are over the 150 minute mark are much, much harder to take.

The Force Awakens midnight estimates are already out for China. $2.7m. Fourth highest of all time, but like 1/3rd of what Furious 7 did, and about 60% of Age of Ultron. I did try to warn people to temper expectations.

I've never expected big numbers from China.

Only big numbers I really expected were from the domestic bo.

Ah, so we're back to logic again, now.

Yeah, $2.7 million sounds about right. It just isn't a huge deal over there. In sure it'll do fine, obviously.

Just fine.

Dammit China. You were the chosen one!

I'm still hopeful for 200 mil.

And y'all wonder why I kept fucking saying that China Don't Care™

I demand apologies. In the form of cupcakes.

Or money.

I hope TFA finishes just a few millions away from Titanic for maximum bitter tears factor.

Either a close win or a close loss. Anything else is boring

What happened to all the presale numbers bring highly significant? It's got 200k higher than F7, surely that's gotta account for something?

it can pick up on word of mouth, curious to see if they advertise it for next month

anyone have a release schedule for china in feb? Jan is a bad month. All the students feel they nee to study up til the end of the month.

Funny how so many people who had never followed any sort of movie tracking in China before suddenly got so excited at by the hour updates of estimated ticket pre-sales at a single chain (?) without knowing anything about how the data might have extrapolated historically or how data sets might have changed over given periods. I guess people like watching numbers get larger and pretend it means something while getting excited over nothing. That explains the popularity of MMOs anyway. :p

Jurassic World was pretty bad, which is a shame considering the achievements of the first film.

IMO, Jurassic World isn't so much bad... I mean, the directing seemed okay, the acting was decent, plot was dumb and dialogue is what you'd expect from a summer movie. I think it just pulled the greatest sin in entertainment, it was boring. I got absolutely nothing out of it. When the credits rolled I was just like, welp.

1>>>2>4>>3, for me. Which is a pretty damn uneven ranking.

It's a shame I feel this way because Jurassic Park was my first movie in theaters. I'll always feel an attachment to it. When I was a kid I loved The Lost World as well but as an adult I unfortunately do not.

So... I like one film a lot, and then I think two of them are slightly okay, and one of them is terrible. D:

I think Jurassic Park 2 aged horribly. I would probably put World above that.

Went to bed not knowing shit.
Woke up still not knowing shit.
Because I don't know shit about China's market.
This is like monitoring lotto tickets sold and then waiting to see if there's a payout, basically.

700k tickets is like $4-5m, and thats split over the first few days. Total presales are significant but Gewara is one presale site.

First day went from looking like $20m to looking like $30m or so. Should be positive news, but people went crazy with opening day record speculation.

It was one of those movies I walked away from thinking it wasn't at all good but it made sense why people enjoyed it so much.

A movie can be mediocre but still enjoyable for a lot of people and there's nothing wrong with that. Looking down on people for enjoying JW is dumb as fuck.

Jurassic Park isn't that great either frankly, but it isn't awful like JW. JP1's achievement was bringing dinos back to life. Once that genie is out of the bottle you can't just put him back in. Other than that it doesn't have much in it for me, but I did like it a lot when I was a kid.

Is Jurassic World a good movie in terms of the technical merits of cinematography and design? Probably not. Does it excel in terms of performances, originality, dialogue, or narrative design? Nope. Did I find it fucking entertaining because it was a big budget by-the-books blockbuster about kids stuck in a dinosaur theme park gone wrong with lots of action and stupid shit? Totally. It advertised itself as a dinosaur theme park disaster movie, and it delivered that. It could have been way better, but considering the fact that there isn't really any competition in the dinosaur theme park disaster movie genre space, I'm just happy it was competent enough to be enjoyable. I'm thinking the people that think it is truly an AWFUL film just have higher expectations because they didn't just want a dinosaur theme park disaster movie. Well, looks like lots of other people did. :p

JP is a fun little adventure/survival movie, its elevated by its amazing visual achievements, but it still at its heart at least a competant, fun adventure movie.

JW was just very badly written and directed. From the first momements of the film it was bad, the use of the JP theme right away without earning it, and the way they shot everything.. it just felt like a film that could have been soooo much more. People saying it was just the writing are wrong, the film was shot ugly and lacks the craftman quality JP (and hell even JP:TLW) had.

It still had some redeaming factors, like being fun in spots, and hitting on the nastalga strings, but those werent enough to make me leave the theater happy. Star Wars:TFA balanced that act correctly.

One of the things that gets overlooked with Jurassic Park is the amount of care that went into making the dinos accurate to the scientific understanding at the time (with a few minor liberties for storytelling purposes).

Jurassic World (and JP3 before) just said "Fuck that. Bring out the hybrid super dinosaurs and 200 foot mososaurs"

FWIW, I won't be truly satisfied until I get a Jurassic Park vs Transformers crossover. I love robots. I love dinosaurs. Let them fight.

:)

China
MMO fans

So, RIP Duck :D

Jurrasic World is not an awful movie. Its disappointing in the way it used the pieces it had, which could have added up to a much more fun film, but what it did do wasn't "bad" in a storytelling or filmmaking sense. Mostly it was just there for about 90 min, with jolts of excitement/interest, and then a pretty decently made dumb action flick happens in the climax, that last 30 minutes being fun enough to carry the rest of the flick.

If anything, it reminds me of Return of the Jedi in feel.

Its not a bad or awful or horrible film. Its dissapointing, but there is still some worth in it.

I don't know. I'm already drained insofar as my monthly quota of Jurassic franchise talk is concerned, lol. I've realized I just don't think of it as a franchise that can possibly sustain my interest. The pending cinematic universe treatment is probably a thing that I'll skip entirely, barring friends pleading with me to attend.

But hopefully the films keep giving the fans what they want! Ain't nothing wrong with that. Just ain't for me, I guess.

Which is a bit of a shame because to this day I can tell you all sorts of things about dinosaurs. Yo, I wanted to be a paleontologist long before I realized it's anthropology that intrigues me.

Looking at this thread then looking at the old TFA boxoffice prediction thread why is it ALWAYS everyone who cheers against TFA's record box office run are the ones who who under predicted the film? Such as the above.

The avatar fanboys are cheering against Star Wars, the Star Wars fanboys are cheering for it. It's pretty simple.

So I guess Gewara was the only Chinese ticket site offering discount prices tickets. I guess that explains the blowup relative to overall numbers.

I dunno, Cheebo, why do you only show up when people doubt the ferocity and destructive nature of the Star Wars IP
