Catch Avatar they said.

Somebody thought Age of Ultron could beat Avatar? Might need to see the receipts on that one.

My uncle already brought up the idea to my family of everyone seeing Star Wars together on Christmas Day. It's definitely going to be a huge thing.

I'm more interested to see what Episode VII does after its OW. The weeks of very little competition will be interesting.

Wait, where's that Ultron opening weekend prediction thread?

Here we go.

Anyway, put me down for 215-220. Somewhere in there.

WHOOOOOPS.

I think it's possible (maybe not probable, but possible) that opening weekend & 2nd weekend numbers could be near identical, considering 2nd weekend will actually be Christmas.

a bit of trivia:

The only direct sequel of a $350M+ domestic film to make more than its predecessor is Catching Fire.

There are a few more examples of $300M+ sequels beating their predecessors, but it doesn't happen all that often.

I expected Age of Ultron to basically top out around the same as the original domestically , maybe slightly worse.

I didn't think that initially but I changed my mind because of how successful all of Phase 2 has been up to this point. I thought that would give it the momentum to stay even with the original.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???

I think the film will play out very much like The Dark Knight Returns comparatively to its predecessor; similar opening weekend to The Avengers, lower domestic gross, higher international gross (mostly in part due to China).

I was right :D

I was going to say Pirates, but it seems that the first one did $305 million; crazy from $40 million opening to $300+

No sane person thinks Star Wars will have the opening weekend record.

However, it does have a very good shot at topping avengers total domestic intake. Especially since there is no chance avengers 2 will do anything near 600 mil.

Black Hat rocked. Not everyone's cup of tea but man that really didn't deserve the panning it got, though it's more for the fans of mann's later work like miami vice and luck.

certainly the best movie a hemsworth is involved in 2015.

There is literally no reality where this is true.
Blackhat was awful.

that nostalgia factor. i felt it at the end of dofp but this is even more overwhelming. seeing R2D2 on the big screen yesterday in front of avengers 2 was kind of the highlight of the night for me.

it's gonna be huge for family audiences.

Revenge of the Sith adjusts to about $485M domestic. I think anything below that would be a large disappointment for the Force Awakens, even if that would put it in the running for #1 of 2015. The Phantom Menace adjusts to $690M. I don't necessarily think that the Force Awakens will match that, but it does show the series' potential. Even adjusted for inflation, the Phantom Menace drew (slightly) bigger crowds than Empire or Jedi.

December legs will help a lot. There is zero competition for a long time. A lot of hype for it already. My theater clapped and cheered at the end of the force awakens trailer at my imax Ultron screening, never saw that happen before.

Avengers will own the US for two weeks and then, little Anna Kendricks movie will bust down the BO which I think will happen despite the fact I'm hyped for Fury Road.

I think Disney only cares about the Worldwide Gross at this point.

The % intake for studios is much better domestically than worldwide still. Theaters get a much bigger cut outside of US. Especially compared to places like China where the cut the studio gets is a lot lower than most places.

Anna Kendrick's movie beating Fury Road ? Sad times if true.

Anyone equating the slight drop in OW to quality is nuts. AoU is better than the original.

I think it was just too big a hill to climb. Maybe Infinity War can do it.

The movie has to be a legitimately good movie for those legs to stay runnin', too. Maybe not GREAT (although that'd be nice) but if we get something on the level of Super 8 or Into Darkness - it's not gonna run as far as it would need to in order to cross 500-600.

while we're sharing anecdotal trailer tales from Avengers screenings - I got no applause from the crowd in general (it was a smaller room, about 150 people) but the logo got a bunch of hushes and a few people doing that little "yay!" clap that people do when they're excited.

It was definitely the most well-recieved of the previews screened. But nobody woo'd or clapped all that loudly at it. But smaller crowds act differently than the big ones, I've noticed.

Nah. Pitch Perfect is a really fun film, and people are excited to get more of it. Fury Road is an R-rated sequelish/rebooty kinda thing to a series that wasn't particularly mainstream in the first place.

I mean, I'm hoping word of mouth goes screaming around the internet/the world upon opening, and that it does something similar to Kingsmen in that it might not ever really sniff #1 but it spends most of the summer hanging around #3-5 for weeks and weeks.

Pitch Perfect 2 won't do anything to the Avengers even if its wins that weekend. Avengers will atrophy on its own like every superhero film. PP2's audience will at least be 60% female. Avengers audience is 60% male (and will include more family business). The crossover isn't that large.

We saw this same thing happen with Furious 7. Big films tend to be frontloaded even with little to no competition.

I do hope WB really pours it on re: Mad Max marketing in the next two weeks. You can stir up a lot of anticipation in a really short amount of time. It's just a matter of if they wanna pour that money into it.

Is this why Germany is boycotting Disney films?

I know that the studios get a larger cut off the US gross but some films do insane cash internationally i.e. Furious 7.

Not that I care at all....but it seems like nothing is coming out in the coming weeks to even challenge this at the movies. Tomorrow land? If you look it doesn't seem any blockbuster is coming up until Jurassic World.

I don't mean it's gonna be a blockbuster but I'm guessing it's gonna be #1 because the audience and how much people know the first. Basically almost similar levels to 22 Jump Street or Hangover 2.

The trailers have been perfect. Best set of trailers WB has done for a big budget film since MoS.

Pitch Perfect will take the #1 slot in 2 weeks.

i'm responding to your previous post but nah man I think it is kinda sad if pitch perfect buries fury road. studios only look at grosses when deciding what worked with tentpoles and what didn't. and fury road is doing everything right in my book, yet it's disappointing performance will likely send a message that the risks shouldn't be taken with that kind of budget :(

WB felt like the last bastion for this stuff too with stuff like Jupiter Ascending and livedierepeat (lol) in recent memory. I'm not one to root for a big corporation like a dork but they deserve the win for once with one of these out of left field properties.

It'll be interesting to see how AoU's legs are going forward. Wonder how the word of mouth will play out and if the MCU formula will start to wear on audiences.

Well, it depends on what "disappointing" is for Warner Bros. I'm not sure where they have that bar set.

Looks like the budget is set at 150. Going by the 2.5x rule of thumb, it'll need to make 400 mil worldwide to be considered break-even, and they'll probably want it to clear 200 mil domestic at least.

I think those things are do-able. I don't know about LIKELY, but that might keep it out of the realm of "disappointment" for the studio.

Has anyone actually seen Mad Max yet? As great as the trailer looks, I'm still nervous the finished product might be more Thunderdome than Road Warrior.

I think the formula has to change starting with Ant-Man but it doesn't seem like that will be the case.

If I recall correctly, impressions from early screenings were overwhelmingly positive.

Deffo, anecdotal I know, but I can't stop hearing about Pitch Perfect amongst people I know whereas I'm the only person I know interested in seeing Mad Max and I've never seen the other films. I think many people of my age group, have no idea what the hell Mad Max is.

Is there any hard data for WOM on Ultron yet? I see a lot of people on Gaf saying how dissapointing the movie is but I've never heard that once from anyone who has seen it that I know. Anecdotal i know which is why I'm curious what the data shows

A cinemascore compared to A+ for Avengers 1.

I had a guy in line behind me for concessions, he and his friend were like "Mad Max? I can't get behind it. I didn't even like the originals, man. That weird punk thing? Feathers and leather or whatever? I don't care for it. And all these reboots. I heard they're gonna reboot Gremlins? Man. What's next. Big Trouble in Little China? Whatever man. I had some friends be like "you gonna see that Mad Max? It looks pretty crazy" and I was like "nah, man, it just looks weird and dumb."

This was like, a thirtysomething beardo in a superhero T-shirt. Wanted no part of Mad Max.

Disappointing.

Man what the fuck.
I'm seeing it twice. Once alone, and one with the wife. My reward for watching Still Alice, which was a great movie by the way.
