I wonder how long before HP opening day falls
That 43.5million midnight number certainly will stand for a long time

Can't see the Hunger Games coming close unless they use 3d
Maybe the final star wars movie if they move it to summer

$43.5M midnight will probably stand indefinitely, because no one does midnight only releases anymore.

Star Wars movies usually go down in box office with the sequels so I would say episode 7 this winter has the best shot when it comes to a Star Wars movie beating it.

Most likely it's going to be Infinity War, BvS or Justice League that beats it. I'm kinda shocked that Jurassic World now has the record and AoU doesn't.

Furious 7 being above AOU, Jurassic World being the one to beat the opening record. Who could have thought?

I think I'm more surprised about Jurassic World though.

Disney will demand a recount.. J/k. I'm starting to rethink EP7s difficulty in taking down the OW in December. JW just destroyed the June opening record by almost $85M. SW could do the same for December.

Yeah this year has been crazy so far.

I expect Star Wars to blow away all records, though.

and since I expect it, it's probably not going to happen

I'm more interested to see what Episode VII does after OW. It should have great legs that time of year with little competition to slow it down.

Opening weekend for December is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, with 85 mil.

Even if Star Wars doubles that (which would be fucking nuts) that's 170 mil - 40 mil short of beating the Jurassic World record. And I don't see December going that big anytime soon.

However, just because it's never happened before doesn't mean it can't happen. But December is not typically where Summer audience behavior comes into play. Opening weekends are smaller but legs are longer. I gotta imagine the hope is that drops from weekend to weekend stay flat as hell. I'm talking 15-20% drops, if not lower. I'd imagine the dream would be 3 consecutive 100 mil weekends.

I think it's probably a given that Star Wars will set a new December record. But I don't think it's gonna approach the all-time OW.

3 opening records out of 4 JP movies. Crazy.

this is the craziest part. remove JP3 from the mix and yes... each JP movie then broke the official opening weekend record for it's individual release.

biggest problem star wars will have is that many sessions of school will still be going. Meaning smaller numbers from Thursday night and Friday during the day. And by problem I don't mean "doomed", just problem breaking that $209M weekend record. Had they released it this Memorial Day weekend, it probably would have beaten JW.

I don't think that's even on the table for Star Wars, honestly. Even if it straight up matches the amount by which JW beat Man of Steel, that's still only somewhere around 140 opening weekend for December. And if it has something like Return of the King legs, that could get you close to or just barely over 400mil domestic by the 3rd or 4th week.

I wonder if Jurassic World will be able to break some of the Dark Knight's weekday records. The Monday record is $24.5M and the Tuesday record is $20.8M

I was just a tad too young to see the original trilogy in theatres. I saw the special editions when I was a teenager.

The earliest movie I know for a fact that I saw in theatres was Land Before Time. However, I remember seeing Gremlins and Goonies as a double feature at a drive in when I was very young. My dad made me hide under a blanket so he didn't have to pay for me. Based on BOM release dates, I probably saw the 1985 re-issues (making me about 3 years old at the time).
hmm I thought you were 40

Nah. I'm 33. I caught the tail end of the 80s, but I wasn't really aware of what was happening in the movie world until around 1989. My dad took me to all three OW record breakers that year.

The 80s was the best decade for the action/adventure blockbuster, so I have a bit of envy for you late 70s chaps.

Whoa, I was born in 80. But yeah, you would never get shit like Ice Pirates made today

80s was awesome for genre stuff like that. I was fortunate to have parents that didn't mind that I saw nearly everything unless it had sex and nudity in it, like horror films. Thankfully, my two older siblings were in high school and college then, so they took me to see that type of stuff.

Fox reached $3B in worldwide grosses for 2010 by that date. Mainly because of Avatar. Universal just hit the $3B worldwide threshold a bit faster than Fox did back then is all.

I'm stupid. I was thinking they were talking about Jurassic World alone for some reason. Thanks.
