Hunger Games should imo. Might drop some domestic but will increase alot on int again

I said this in a previous thread, but I don't see how it increases another 30% on top of Catching Fire to hit $1B (assuming domestic is flat). It's only been 1 year. This is not the final film.

how is GOTG's overseas numbers tracking compared to other Marvel films? Have to hand it to Marvel, they can do no wrong. Very impressive

Under Thor 2 and Captain 2 on average according to BOM

HTTYD 2 International grosses have BLASTED past HTTYD 1's lifetime International grosses. I'm now confident that HTTYD 2 will outperform its predecessor through its momentum Internationally, so it will end up as a big success for the company.

According to Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg:

"How to Train Your Dragon 2 is the ninth highest-grossing film of the year so far on a worldwide basis and it has yet to be released in several significant international territories. It will be a highly profitable film for the Company and DreamWorks Dragons will remain a very valuable franchise for many years to come."

But in more disappointing news, Planes 2 extends its domestic underperformance compared to its predecessor with $12 million behind. And, for the first week, Planes 2 is underperforming Internationally as well.

Very relieved about HTTYD.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Highest grossing of the franchise in the US/CA

1 Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Fox $189,330,000
2 Planet of the Apes (2001) Fox $180,011,740
3 Rise of the Planet of the Apes Fox $176,760,185
4 Planet of the Apes Fox $32,589,624

Despite opening with ~$20 million less than ASM2 and Godzilla, Apes is already ~$4 million ahead of them after 24 days.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes $72,611,427 / $189,330,000 / 24
Godzilla $93,188,384 / $185,214,185 / 24
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 $91,608,337 / $184,924,580 / 24

(though that says more about the terrible legs of the other two)

Still some $34 million below Rise worldwide, but it's only a matter of time (China gets it August 29, it seems):

1 Rise of the Planet of the Apes Fox $481.8
2 Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Fox $447.5
3 Planet of the Apes (2001) Fox $362.2

Hope it reaches $600 million ww.

On an unrelated, note, X-Men Days of Future Past died very quickly this past week in the US/CA. The dream of surpassing The Last Stand is over. =\

Great numbers for GotG, it's a relief that a project that was considered risky is considered a success (and a good movie on top of that). Hope it means more out there adaptations in the future. International gross seem to be a bit disappointing compared to other Marvel movies this year, guess we'll see when it opens everywhere (which will take a while).

HTTYD 2 will make more than its predecessor internationally, which is great news. But it's in the same situation as Kung Fu Panda 2, Dreamworks probably expected a lot more from it... I don't really get it, usually sequels to beloved animated movies don't struggle like both those did (see Despicable Me, Shrek, Toy Story, Madagascar...)

I'm surprised nobody thinks the third Hobbit movie doesn't have a shot at a billion, Desolation got really close despite following a divisive first movie, if they market the battle of the five armies correctly, they should be able to get there (even if it has to crawl to a billion like the first one).

I don't Hunger Games doing it, it would require some pretty insane growth overseas.

Very relieved about HTTYD.

HTTYD WORLDWIDE GROSS-TO-DATE (WEEK 8): $429,247,696
HTTYD LIFETIME WORLDWIDE GROSS: $494,878,759

REMAINING: $65,631,063

HTTYD 2 WORLDWIDE GROSS-TO-DATE (WEEK 8): $463,569,000 (ESTIMATE)

If HTTYD 2 sold at the same pace as HTTYD (i.e. if it sold another $65.6 million):

1) Shrek 2 (2004, $150 million budget): $919,838,758
2) Shrek 3 (2007, $160 million budget): $798,958,162
3) Shrek 4 (2010, $165 million budget): $752,600,867
4) Madagascar 3 (2012, $145 million budget): $746,921,274
5) Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011, $150 million budget): $665,692,281
6) Kung Fu Panda (2008, $130 million budget): $631,744,560
7) Madagascar 2 (2008, $150 million budget): $603,900,354
8) The Croods (2013, $135 million budget): $587,204,668
9) Puss in Boots (2011, $130 million budget): $554,987,477
10) Madagascar (2005, $75 million budget): $532,680,671
11) HTTYD 2 (2014, $145 million budget): $529,200,063 (estimated)
12) HTTYD 1 (2010, $165 million budget): $494,878,759
13) Shrek (2001, $60 million budget): $484,409,218
14) Monsters Vs. Aliens (2009, $175 million budget): $381,509,870
15) Shark Tale (2004, $75 million budget): $367,275,019
16) Over the Hedge (2006, $80 million budget): $336,002,996
17) Megamind (2010, $130 million budget): $321,885,765
18) Rise of the Guardians (2012, $145 million budget): $306,941,670
19) Bee Movie (2007, $150 million budget): $287,594,577
20) Turbo (2013, $127 million budget): $282,570,682
21) Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014, $145 million budget): $268,654,193
22) Chicken Run (2000, $45 million budget): $224,834,564
23) The Prince of Egypt (1998, $70 million budget): $218,613,188
24) Wallace & Gromit (2005, $30 million budget): $192,610,372
25) Flushed Away (2006, $149 million budget): $178,120,010
26) Antz (1998, $105 million budget): $171,757,863
27) Spirit (2002, $80 million budget): $122,563,539
28) Sinbad (2003, $60 million budget): $80,767,884
29) The Road to El Dorado (2000, $95 million budget): $76,432,727

But I'm actually optimistic that HTTYD 2 will surpass Madagascar. Hell, if it continues to do well, it might even match and surpass Puss And Boots. This is the time where HTTYD 2 really is starting to show profits for Dreamworks.

It started out quite mediocre, but it's really been gaining ground in the past few weeks. I'm really pleased with how well it's been performing lately.

^Will be very interested to see if it does anything in China.

The first one didn't make a big splash, but Dreamworks has been cozying up to that market for a couple years.

Age of Ultron is going to be the biggest thing in the world.

Then Avengers 3 will be the biggest thing in the galaxy.

X-Men made around what GOTG made its opening weekend, and ended up at the $230 million mark domestically. Such a great film too.

They still do good when all is said and done, but they are both much better than so many superhero movies that make significantly more money.

The only superhero films that make significantly more money are the Avengers, Iron Man, Batman and Superman (assuming this is domestic gross).

$200M+ is pretty good for the rest.

This was my most anticipated movie of the year. So glad to see that not only did the movie totally deliver, but audiences thought so as well with those box office numbers. The Marvel brand is unstoppable, going to be crazy watching how they do next year.

As for GotG at the moment, I'm hoping it does great overseas and in its second week. Would be surreal if it was the highest grossing comic book movie of the year.

I'm pretty surprised by GotG, I figured it wouldn't do that great at the box office (maybe 40-50 million opening).

I see Godzilla ended up topping 500 mill. Guess it was a hit in Japan?

It's doing well. It has grossed $15 million after two weekends. ASM2 was at $14 million in the same time and reached $30 million in the end.

The newest Rurouni Kenshin was the no. 1 movie in Japan, with estimated ¥860 million. Good increase from the first one -- ¥560 million.

Guardians had the highest female attendance, percentage wise, of any Marvel film.

Wonder what brought out the women?

There was a lot of awwing going on when I saw it. A group of girls went aww at pretty much anytime Groot or Rocket had an emotional/cute moment.

I was surprised at my showing. I maybe counted like less than 10 people leaving. Otherwise everyone was glued to their seats for both scenes.
There was more people that stayed than people that left, and there were a lot of small kids at my showing, but I was still surprised.

Like, why even see a movie in the theater, if you're not gonna stay for the whole thing?
