I saw Elysium yesterday and loved it. 2nd favorite movie of this year, Oblivion being 1st. I'm not sure how its at 66 on metacritic. What's not to like? It was sci-fi done right.

No it wasn't. It was everything wrong with modern sci fi. ie. Valuing concepts over sound narrative and characterization/character development.

WTF happened to the to-do list?

Was it pulled from every theater after only 2 weeks???

I guess Plaza didn't show up drunk to enough places with the title of the movie written on her chest.

It has a blockbuster budget and cast so I expect Sony/MGM think RC is an early 2014 blockbuster.

Nah, they pushed the movie from this summer to February. They know they have a bomb on their hand, especially after Total Recall. Obviously when they started on it they didn't expect it to bomb, but I think somewhere along the line they realized it.

.

No but seriously, the trailer looked good, the cast list was extensively well known....and everybody loves teen sex movies.

Should have been an easy $20m....but of the 6 theaters near me, only 2 ever got it, and only two shows per day, including an 11:45pm showing

What really surprised me is that when I saw This Is the End, the trailer for the to-do-list aired during the pre-trailer ads. Like between a coke commercial and a nissan one. Wasnt even bundled as a real trailer.

Talking toys, animals and robots I understand.

Maybe they should just continue with that idea and do talking boats, food, bugs, books, poop...

Talking cars is hard to understand? Kids (boys in particular) love cars and most of the merchandise that is sold is most likely sold to boys.

I'd disagree with the thread title as Damon can still anchor a film (as evidenced by Elysium's number one opening if it is low) but the question is whether he can carry another franchise after Bourne. WB had better hope so as they've betting quite a lot on Damon via his first look deal with Affleck.

I was actually expecting Elysium to do a little worse than this ($25m opening?) so at least Sony reached the $30m barrier which is something even if it is pretty underwhelming for a film of this size.

The fact Elysium grossed $7m than District 9 is pretty telling. The film looked pretty enough in the trailers but it just didn't seem to grab anyone. I remember thinking that SPE must be struggling to get the message out there when only the second trailer they released was nearly 4 minutes long and gave away almost the entire film.

Between this Oblivion and Pacific Rim this hasn't been a great summer for original sci-fi. Also surely Pacific Rim can crawl to $100m in the US at this point. For the film to fall short at the last hurdle would be a little frustrating.

Do people proof read their posts? You are missing a couple of words here.

I think it was on about 500 screens to begin with, and it did its budget in its first weekend. I imagine it was just a token theatrical release because it had to have one, as I suspect it will do a lot better on video. It is certainly a gif'able movie.

This isn't looking to good for future original Sci-Fi. Hopefully people watch Interstellar.

Same can be said for Transcendence.

Ouch, didn't realise that. Just read up about the delay and it was switched with Elysium. Doesn't give you a lot of confidence for the film!

why did they greenlit that Percy sequel? didn't the first one kinda bomb?

Domestically it came up a little short but according to Boxofficemojo its budget was 95. It earned 88 domestically and 137 foreign for a 131 million profit (excluding hidden costs).

Its got potential to be a franchise so they're going for it.

Seriously? No way. I'd be shocked if this occurred.

shocked?

Thor (pre Avengers)
Worldwide: $449,326,618

Man of Steel
Worldwide: $647,431,663

Iron Man 2 (pre Avengers)
Worldwide: $623,933,331

Iron Man 3 (post Avengers)
Worldwide: $1,212,390,348

so Iron Man doubled its B.O. after Avengers and Thor only needs to do 1.5x. Does it happen? I don't know but i would be far from shocked if it does.

Oh dear, someone invested in a second Percy Jackson film. Long shot but, does Alexandra Dadario gets naked on it?

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
Studios must be really desperate for another Harry Potter type franchise. Can't really blame them, it must have been nice to have stuff like HP and Twilight in the chamber every year, something you knew for sure was going to do well. I think they just need to let go of the idea that Percy Jackson is going to ever be a thing. Maybe an animated series, but the film franchise is just not all that appealing to people. There is almost no enthusiasm for its release.

Do you regularly hang out with 10 year olds? Would you even know if there was enthusiasm for its release?

i thought it grossed much less than that. Oh well, i don't blame them for trying expecially now that Harry Potter is out of the way and the next Narnia isn't out for at least a couple years

anyway

where? i don't see any.

besides We're the Millers, which I assume is another super craptacular comedy which will obviously make money, all I see is Smurfs 2, Elysium, Planes, Percy Jackson underperforming or just plain bombing, but maybe I'm wrong

I was going to watch it this weekend and had the same thought when I found out it wasn't on any local screens. Maybe just a crowded summer lineup? Then again, The Heat is still showing, so who knows?

Maybe they're going for an early video release or something.

Edit: The Internship was similar too; I didn't see it anywhere after a couple of weeks.

yeah, the to-do list didn't even expand to a wide release. Pretty bizarre given the huge media blitz the cast (okay, just Plaza really) went on before release, trying their best to throw as much random shit at the wall and hope something went viral.

Wonder what Elysium's performance means for Blomkamp's career. I don't think a smaller budgets in the future would necessarily be a bad thing—maybe he needs to take a break from such action heavy movies and simply focus on either the action or the socially conscious sci-fi stuff because I don't really think he's proven he can handle both at the same time.

Elysium's certainly won't be a bomb, especially when the international markets are done and dusted but It wont be the huge step forward from D9 that Sony were banking on.

Pacific Rim might make more money in China than in North America. The Guillermo del Toro popcorn flick is Warner Bros.'s highest grossing film of all time in the market with $76.4 million after a dozen days in release. The North American total currently stands at $96.5 million, giving the film a worldwide gross of $344.1 million after factoring in the $247.4 million the film has earned from 61 overseas territories.

Closing in on $100M in China.

Wolverine certainly seemed to come out to less than excitement. I remember when people loved Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and wanted to see him in everything. Guess that's what a first bad movie and a decade old role does.

Way to go China!

They do love their mechs.

Yeah. After X3 and Origins, they have a hard hill to climb. Singer needs to undo every bit of X3 with Days of Future Past, then give us a real X-Men 4.

Thor is no Iron Man.

Man of Steel isn't entirely done with its overseas run. Still missing Japan somehow. I have no idea if Superhero movies are popular there or not though...

No one is saying it is. But they were both in the Avengers, and Iron Man had a 2x boost... How can you be shocked if Thor gets a boost too?
I think it will, Marvel is also hoping for it. It's the same reason Loki is featured heavily in the promos.

I didn't realize Iron Man's overseas grosses were so poor pre-Avengers.

Yeah Iron Man 3's domestic gross was only about $100 million higher than Iron Man 1. IM3's international gross was like $600 million higher than IM1's though...

Thor is opening in November though, which is unproven ground for a superhero movie. It will be interesting to see how it performs there.
It also only has two weeks until Catching Fire opens in North America

November is a bed for long legs, it might open softer or at similar level but legs will be better during that period. Catching Fire gross will be NA centric, it shouldnt impact Thor's WW numbers that much, which is the point of discussion here.

Yeah, I forgot to put the NA part in about Catching Fire before. Fixed.

Doesn't Catching Fire have a chance at an overseas explosion like Twilight had with its sequel?
