WASHINGTON - The following is a statement from Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (MPAA) Chairman and CEO Senator Chris Dodd on the resolution of the Chinese value-added tax payment issue:

"The MPAA understands that the China Film Group stopped payments owed to MPAA studios in China pending resolution of the application of a new value-added tax (VAT) due to be implemented nationwide as of August 1.

We are pleased to hear that the Chinese government has addressed the matter and all money due will be paid in full. It is our understanding that the payment process has recommenced.

The U.S. and Chinese film industries enjoy a close and productive relationship and the MPAA is grateful to our counterpart, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) for their commitment in resolving this matter favorably. We look forward to further strengthening our ties with SAPPRFT as the Chinese screen community continues its path to becoming a global powerhouse in the international entertainment market."

Pretty dull weekend.

Friday Studio Estimates:

1) The Butler - $8.3M
2) Kick-Ass 2 - $5.8M
3) We're the Millers - $5.4M - $57M
4) Elysium - $3.9M - $46M total
5) Planes - $3.61M - $36M total
6) Jobs - $2.6M
7) Percy Jackson 2 - $2.5M - $33M total

x) Paranoia - $1.3M

- The Butler is off to a good start. The film had a $30M price tag, and should be in the mid 20M range this weekend.

- Kick-Ass 2 is down from the first film, and is probably only looking at a $13-15M opening weekend. At least it only cost $28M

- Poor reviews definitely hurt Jobs. The film was low budget though.

- Paranoia flopped, even with its $35M budget.

Looks like Eylsium is going to top out around $70M. I think that Blomkamp is going to have trouble getting that sort of budget for an R-Rated sci fi flick going forward.

Kick-Ass 2, Elysium, Planes & Percy Jackson bombas.

Pacific Rim broke $100M in China this weekend and has now overtaken the the film's domestic gross. I thought it would slow down in China this week, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Really good legs for the region.

Pacific Rim should finish at #5 of all time in China for a Hollywood film (in $USD, behind Avatar, Titanic, Transformers 3, and Iron Man 3).

I originally thought it would finish somewhere around $75M which would have been solid. I never thought it would get past $110M and start to creep on Transformers 3 (I know it won't get there). Crazy good for an original film.

I think he knows this as well. I read an interview a week or two ago where he said he figured this was his one shot at a big budget sci-fi film, so he went all out. And that he was already planning to do a much lower budget film as a follow up.

I can't find that specific interview, but here's one confirming his next film will be much lower budgeted.

It's a shame that is the case but considering the quality of D9 i'm still really looking forward to his next movie.

First big budget hollywood movie that does more in China than domestic?
