The irony of this movie getting hit with complaints that it is too much like A New Hope, it is sure copying what A New Hope did box office wise in 1977.

Well... A New Hope started out small and kept building and building. This movie just exploded out of the gates. Avatar and Titanic are more apt comparisons to ANH. :p This thing's first week is going to be near 400 million.

I still am amazed that this thing has a very legitimate shot at selling more tickets than A New Hope did domestically. People to this day talk about how everyone went to see A New Hope back in '77, how much a cultural touch-stone it was to see that theatrical. Insane.

Yeah I am at a loss for thinking of any other cross-franchise team up movies before that (and pre-Avengers Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, etc were seen as different franchises by the public)

Yeah, I get that. They've turned movie a series into something like tv shows.

I don't think it was done that well or smoothly, so I think they get too much credit. But alright.

Well, probably part of that is that there are more people in America(and far more theaters) than there were 40 years ago.

The perfect storm for Box office for Star Wars

- Great Critics reviews
- Great Word of Mouth
- New Trilogy design like Old trilogy, the biggest desire for star wars fan
- Spring like weather
- No big box office competition
- Escapism after recent tragic events.

I believe this will be the first $1 bln Domestic movie

One could argue TFA is set up like a tv series as well. Lots and lots of set up in the film with a "come back next week!" aspect to find out the answers to the various questions it sets up.

Ironically, the old cheap serials that George Lucas used as inspiration for Star Wars now live on as the basis for every mega-franchise in film these days.

The preview showings were bigger than the first film, and the first day overall was huge. It was the days after that that it started to fall under the first one. WOM usually sets in after the first weekend, but it still could have played into the first Saturday being down. Enough people seeing it on Friday and saying it wasn't as good as the original.

Even if it fell short of tracking, it was the #2 opening of all time when it hit. Still impressive, even if the movie disappointed.

And as has been said earlier, that weekend was a huge sports weekend that they couldn't have really predicted. Pac - Mayweather was the type of sporting event we hadn't had for years until that point, and it absolutely siphoned people off of Saturday. Word of mouth would have taken care of the rest.

Early predictions for Wednesday are 37-39 million. This is performing like Avatar just bigger...

OW's 250M Star Wars + Avatar legs is awesome
This movie will keep records for years

I don't expect any movies to beat it, even Avatar 2/Justice League/Batman v Superman/Avengers 3.1 or 3.2/etc...

Episode 8 will obviously be bigger than any super hero movie released between now and when it comes out in 2017 but it won't be bigger than TFA.

Agreed. Even ESB was smaller than ANH right?

It could follow the Lord of the Rings trajectory with each film out-performing the last. I think a movie like Empire is a bit slower and spends time building the new relationship/training with Luke and Yoda, and perhaps the audience excitement was a little lowered. If Episode eight retains the level of quality of TFA, and has a more audience pleasing action scene at the end (like the Two Towers had), it could pass TFA. I personally hope the film follows Empire though.

The addition of the off-year Star Wars film is interesting though. I think it could add to the fatigue, but I'm usually wrong when it comes to mass audience reactions.

One last comment for tonight. It's looking pretty likely that 4 out of the 5 most attended initial runs in domestic movie history will be E.T., Titanic, Star Wars, and Star Wars: TFA (perhaps in that order).

After that, I can't tell if Jaws, Jurassic Park, or Avatar takes the other spot. Probably Jurassic Park, since I would guess that Jaws also had undocumented re-releases in the 70s, and Avatar's average ticket price probably won't end up being that much lower than TFA's.

so basically, no film in the past ~40 years has taken the #1 domestic spot without being within the top 5 most attended domestic films in history.

Even more interesting, is that as close as other films eek their way toward overtaking the reigning champ, none ever get there before the next champ not only beats it, but destroys the record.

Star Wars->ET = 31%
Star Wars->Titanic = 30% (I'll omit the SE release push for obvious reasons)
Titanic->Avatar = 26%

If TFA hits $1B, that would make Avatar->TFA = 31%

I think star wars fatigue already started

So that explains the crazy Avatar like holds this is having every day!

Marvel movies do great without any significant franchise fatigue even with 2+ a year, and it is obvious the public love Star Wars a hell of a lot more than they do super hero movies. The fatigue argument went out the window when this thing started steamrolling James Cameron films.

Poor Chris. Outside of Thor he's no better than his bro Liam.
On the other hand, Lesser Hemsworth is already scouring DTV projects, and people do actually like Chris; they just don't like him in more dramatic roles, especially since they rarely take advantage of his willingness for self-depreciation and his charming personality, which are his two strongest suits.

It started like two months ago

I never understood people crying about fatigue.

I don't give a shit about football (american) or basketball by and large. Yet basically year round, you can't escape CONSTANT in-your-face marketing of NFL and NBA. Turn on my PS4? There is is. Go to the grocery store? There it is. Go to the big box store? There is is.

yet I don't "fatigue" on it. Again it goes back to what I first said. I don't give a shit about them. It doesn't even register. And you can't even say "yeah bu bu bu but Star Wars is EVERYWHERE!!!!!" because I have to believe that the marketing and licensing dollars of EITHER the NBA or NFL destroy what Lucasfilm is putting into Star Wars.

Point being, if you are fatigued on something, stop paying attention to it. If you don't stop paying attention to it.. it is your own decision and fault that you are fatigued on it.. not the marketing/merchandising.

ID4-2 is Baby Hemsworth's last chance. If that flops, he's down to SyFy movies, or worse, back to Australia.

Isn't he in the new ghostbusters in a comedic role as their secretary? I was happy to hear that casting rumor

To me the biggest positive is that one of the most diverse movie in terms of blockbusters is headed towards the biggest box office. One of the few blockbusters where there is no whitewashing or manwashing

The middle chapters in the SW trilogies tend to be the lowest so far. They come out for the opening chapter, then drop-off for the second, only to come back strong to see the ending(although still less than the opening chapter).

edit: fixed link for Hemsworth shame

Going through that list and god damn, I knew Pluto Nash was an all-time bomb but I had no idea it was THAT big of a bomb. $4 million domestic, $7 million worldwide on a $100 million budget?

Holy fuck, it increased over Tuesday! That's some Avatar like shit. Going for my third viewing on Christmas and I'm just as excited like I was the first time.

Liam is, honest to god, what happens when you try to genetically recreate Chris but a batch of Jai Courteney accidentally spills into the mix. Sure, it looks like the intended result, but deep down, you're in for a life where the likes of Miley Cyrus drops your ass like a sack of potatoes.

Sports marketing and film marketing aren't really the same.

I'd also probably go one further and say sports fans aren't nearly as in your face about it as Star Wars fans.
You are posting in what is essentially a Star Wars thread. If you hang out in the NBA thread in the community board multiple days in a row if you don't care at all about the NBA I am pretty sure you would feel fatigued of the NBA and feel the NBA is being forced in your face.

Its all about the echo chamber that you decide to reside in online. Star Wars would be the NFL of GAF. Go elsewhere, NFL is omnipresent and some of their fans are so odious that they make some of the MRA Sues look downright reasonable.

Episode VIII will make 700m domestic and still be seen as a disappointment and a sign of fatigue.

You're right Cheebo, this one thread fatigued me. You've got me.

We're past the point of fatigue. The fanbase has already ruined any potential interest in Star Wars for me.

$200+ million weekend incoming?

no way it dips 20%. Box office watchers will lose their shit if it does. No way.

well no, you did it to yourself.. Again it is one's own decision to pay attention to shit or not (like me and sports). Oh well, that sucks.
