I doubt even Sculli would be willing to wager (assuming Avatar 2 makes 2017) that A2 would outgross Star Wars 8 domestically.

$45M would be quite a bit lower than expected given the Thursday number. Obviously that is still great in the larger scheme of things, but we'd have to adjust our expectations back down to the $130-140M range given the fact that tomorrow won't be that much higher.

The first theater I went to tonight was sold out for the next two SW showings, and the second theater was sold out one showing and the one I was in was packed. It was kind of crazy, felt like opening night all over again.

Has been such a roller coaster of predictions for today. lol

Those box office forum people sure like to overreact over numbers :P

So you're telling me there is still a chance this starts dropping like a rock and not pass 760M? (jimcarrey gif)

YES YES YES!

It's ok ukgaf, I think it's kinda weird to go to the movies on Christmas too. It's apparently a really popular thing to do though

Can confirm, just went to see Star Wars, substantial lines going in and coming out.

This shit will topple Avatar. Just you wait.

In US, definitely.

World wide, however, it's highly unlikely. Avatar was an absolute worldwide phenomenon that grossed 2 billion in the international market! Star Wars is big, but, world wide, however, it is not Avatar big. Star wars, as usual, is trailing behind on the domestic:international ratio, and is finding it hard to maintain even a 48:52 purely because of its stunning domestic performance. I suspect that, after China, the percentage may be closer to 45:55 or even 40:60. However, even if it is 40:60, which is great for Star Wars but quite unlikely (it will require China to make at least 500 mill + imo), it will need to gross about 1.1 billion in US, which, again, is very difficult. I think it can make Titanic numbers - I really don't think it will come within 200 million of Avatar, despite the much expanded international market.

Could you add a link? I don't know if this is from Deadline, that guy on the box office forums, or elsewhere.

The prior record for Christmas day was $24m, so TFA more than doubled it. And that was Sherlock Holmes' opening day. 0_o

Yeah, this run is truly simply amazing. $155m weekend incoming!

Anecdotal experience: While waiting in line for Hateful Eight, I noticed people talking about how good Star Wars was, or how they still needed to see it, and another person saying they would go see it with the person again. It really feels like Star Wars is having a buzz. I don't remember hearing any of this for any of the prequels.

Yeah, I was not expecting to have enjoyed Star Wars more than Hateful Eight. But man, it wasn't even a question. And heard quite a few people AT Hateful Eight talking about Star Wars, too.

I can appreciate Tarantino just doing whatever he wants, and he mostly makes kickass movies, but holy shit I can't handle a movie with a 3.15 hour runtime. Even with Goggins!

I'll say this, I'd rather watch a 3.15 hour sub-par Tarantino film than a 3 hour King Kong film. Jesus, Peter Jackson.

It might be because those movies were the drizzling shits and the force awakens is actually good

People have been waiting a looooooong time for a new, good Star Wars movie.

I will check out The Hateful Eight a few days after its release. Length doesn't bother me as long as I'm watching 3 hours of great film.

It's VERY Tarantino. Got a lot in common with Reservoir Dogs. Twice the length, though.

It's also, like most every other Tarantino film, great at pointing out who in your theater thinks a white person merely speaking the n-word aloud is HILARIOUS.

Also, anything between 155-160 is still pretty goddamned ridiculous.

The domestic performance is so insane that despite the ratio TFA is still ahead of JW overseas. Without China.

Then next year Star wars gets bopped by Batman v Superman: champion edition, which will make 300 bajillion dollars.

Count on it.

Maybe.

Most of the time.

my dad, who generally dislikes crowded theaters and huge movies, wants to go see star wars in imax next week.

i was a little surprised that the recommendation came from him. i'm looking forward to a second viewing though. last time we saw star wars together in theaters, it was revenge of the sith. i think we've seen them all in theaters together except attack of the clones.
