For fun, top 5 as I see it for 2016 box-office right now:

2016:
1. Rogue One
2. Captain America: Civil War
3. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
4. Independence Day: Resurgence
5. X-Men: Apocalypse
ITT: I learn that there's a 2016 Star Wars movie. I've been pretty tuned out of the plans pre-TFA release as part of my spoilers avoidance. Had no idea. :lol

I want the Obi Wan spinoff set between EpIII and EpIV.

Obi Wan drifting between shady Tattoine hangouts, narrating his loneliness, becoming an alcoholic.

At the end he recognises Luke is his chance at redemption.

"I saw him again out past the Toshi station blockade, 20 years old, maybe less. He appeared like an angel out of this filthy mess. They. Cannot. Touch. Him."

Ice cold water in the face, friend.

I don't think Suicide Squad is the type of movie parents will be taking kids to. You need kids to get the big money.

Fair point I suppose. Part of me thinks Joker is a bigger draw than either Batman or Superman right now and the Suicide Squad Comic-Con video has more views and likes than the Batman v Superman trailer.

Creed is a flop bro.

there's gonna be a Star Wars movie every year for the rest of our lives, so get ready

I figured it would ramp up to that, but I didn't expect it to happen out the gates. Basically I didn't expect spin offs in the middle of the new trilogy. But Disney gonna Disney. Given what TFA has done I can't blame them for stacking them up.

Bigger draw with adults. Little kids no. The little kids with Batman backpacks are what matter more than those who even know what comic con is in terms of super hero box office.

I thought Rogue One was going to be a Poe/BB-8 centered movie. Disappoint! Though I'm sure I'll find some way to enjoy it as it actually is.

Mad Max is a classic example of a blockbuster movie that just should not have released in the summer. It needed room to feel like an event. I'm not sure how realistic it would have been to move up the release date, but WB should have gone for this weekend instead.

I still don't get why WB spent so much on marketing Mad Max. It was never going to be a massive movie. Spending Avengers like marketing on it was just absurd.

I think Mad Max was supposed to be another trilogy attempt, it was a double-down after the positive reviews and production budget. But that's a hard sell especially without China, maybe Miller goes to DC

I want studios going absolutely apeshit trying to sell the best movies they've made all year. I'd love for that to be the norm.

"I can't believe they spent $90 million getting trailers/commercials all over Monday Night Football for "Spotlight,"

I would fucking LOVE that.

Mad Max was never ever going to be a movie "event". No matter what date it released.
I guess it's depends on your definition of event. 300 made $70M in the first weekend of March back in 2007. Mad Max is also a stylish R-rated blockbuster, and had some truly amazing reviews. I think a $70M opening would have happened if it wasn't in the shadow of other films.

It did alright, and a sequel would likely be less because Miller had shit luck with the shooting locations.

Also, 200 mil? I heard 50.

The Quality Wars have begun!

I think if Mad Max releases in August, it probably does better financially.

But there's always like 2 or 3 films every year that you look at and go "Shit. They scheduled that WAY wrong"

It's a shame too. Even crap like Terminator Gensisys managed to outgross Fury Road thanks to a $100m gross in China.

I feel like WB would be smarter with another Max movie. And yeah, some films got scheduled wrong. Tomorrowland should've come out on February 30th!

I was about to say Inside Out, then I remember that movie made the most money (domestic) of any movie that didn't hit #1, so I'm not sure how much better it could have done.
