Just got home from the march in DC. Fantastic. Despite being in a number of protests and one Inauguration...this may have been the largest in person thing of which I have been a part.

People were so kind to one another.

I was right behind the stage when Gloria Steinem was speaking but could not here a thing.

I'll post my pictures later.

No one would ever dare to call for an insurrectionary march on Trump Tower with the goal of physically dragging the president-elect and his family out of their penthouse. No one says the Women’s March on Washington should ransack the White House or occupy Congress and appoint themselves legislators.

But they should. That's where Occupy failed. They were too scared to go to the next level and actually occupy something by force. Sometimes violence is needed for true permanent change.

That's a good turnout for Denton, considering they got that confederate soldier statue out there in front of the courthouse. I used to live in Lewisville and would come to Denton for jazz night at Sweetwater. Good times.

fake edit: While typing this I googled Sweetwater and apparently it got completely changed months ago?! Damn you 2016!

I'm glad there was a large crowd in Denton. I wish i could have went to the Fort Worth March.

What comes next is absolutely important (and to be clear I'm not attacking you for bringing up a very good point), but the first thing you have to do in a fight like this is stand back up after you've been knocked down. I can't speak for everyone, but I feel like I've been down since Election Day and needed something like today to restore a measure of hope and defiance in place of despair.

Whatever comes next, today was a goddamn good day and we haven't had one of those in far too long.

Without devising a means to channel the energy into the ballot box starting in ten months (state level) or some other directly impactful form of protest besides a march, there's no ability to impact the federal government because those in power, having gained control of all levers without the protestors past support, have no reason to listen.

The Guardian, a notorious Murdoch-run pro-Trump propaganda outfit from London, put together a list that went well beyond Occupy to note how ineffectual these marches can be.

His thin skin may be a differentiating factor

I have a 3yr old and cant fathom having him hold a sign up. Im sure most of these kids were just told by the parent to hold this while they have no idea wtf for.

Just my 2 cents, glad to see people get together for a cause, lets just hope they continue doing it and not just go back to their daily lives after this weekend is over.

Kids are more smarter than people give them credit for.

My little sister, who is six, is protesting Trump by not putting her hand over her heart while saying the pledge of allegiance at school. I found it cute and she will probably forget it in a week's time.

Actually protests have already been working. Protests stopped the stripping of the ethics committee.

We need to remember that We the People control this government.

Yeah the confederate soldier statue is pretty dang problematic but chanting "BLACK LIVES MATTER!" below it felt pretty good.

Went to the Portland one. Heard figures of 50-100k people showed up. I have no idea how many people were actually there but the whole entire route was just a big square mass of people with no beginning or end.

Feels good to read how successful this was everywhere.

"It's just racism. Did anyone riot when a black man was a president. But now you have a white person as a president, and you have the racists burning limos and causing violence over a peaceful transition" (in sum and substance)

That's the perspective of people who listen to right-wing news have of this

After seeing those clips of the those reps in Colorado and Washington being boo'd off stage for helping destroy the ACA maybe (fingers crossed) real change will happen when people start waking up - stuff like this helps in that.

Plus Trump's tantrums will keep him in the news and overshadow anything he does, which is great.

Racists get to indoctrinate their children without restriction, but somehow we're not allowed to let our kids participate in a human rights demonstration? Not buying one minute of that shit.

It was definitely a #goodproblem that the D.C. March was so huge we couldn't actually march, but I kinda wanted to!

My mom was a champ during the event, I had to try and keep up with her charging ahead!

The Ethics gutting and the ACA protests of politicians are good examples of the key difference and a large part of my point: the people in power have the consent of their constituency to govern having won elections. When their constituency turns against them on an issue, that's when feet are being held up to the fire.

Absent that, I'm pessimistic. There's no need to listen, even if there's plenty of realpolitik reasons to do so, and given the sorts of lawmakers in control of DC now, I don't think they'll care.

It seems nuts to suggest a giant women's protest is a partisan event because men and women exist along all spots on the spectrum, but the women (and men) marching aren't among the ruling party's constituency.

The Tea Party was a loud news cycle dominating powerless nuisance until 2010.
