Worst live band you have ever seen

I saw Ian Brown (solo stuff; not with the Stone Roses) with my wife about 15 years ago, and he was awful. Quite clearly coked out of his head; he couldn't hold a tune, didn't actually bother singing a lot and did a short set. Very disappointing.

Mars Volta was one of the worst sounding bands I have ever been to, They were opening for Red Hot Chilli Peppers so at least the concert wasn't a bust but they were terrible.

Same impression, here. It really surprised me. I saw them during the same tour, i think. We're queens of the Stone Age playing too? That was a great live performance!

I saw Van Halen last year.....oooooffaaaa. What a shit show. David lee Roth phoned that shit in so hard I felt embarrassed (no one thinks your a sex symbol anymore dude). The rest of the band wasn't terrible and I didn't go expecting 1980s Van Halen, but come on, a little effort would have been better than what I saw on stage that night..

Roth was always a terrible live singer. Sammy is so much better live.

I saw Kiss on their Circus of something tour and they were awful. Sounded horrible and horrible energy.

I saw Ian Brown do a solo gig in around 2010.

He came out on stage about half an hour late, sang two songs and then walked off. It was at a festival where they had an hour slot. Someone obviously persuaded/told him to go back out and he did two more songs and then walked off.

The tough alliance. They were drunk out of their minds. Walked on stage wearing underwear and lipsynced everything except the worst a capella version of You'll never walk alone I've ever heard and then stumbled around on stage for a couple of minutes before leaving. The whole thing was over in about 20 minutes.

second this, he was absolutely awful at leeds fest when i saw him

Marilyn Manson... that lazy bum just striking a few poses, while his "Band" is just pretending to play (hell you could see the roadies behind the amps actually playing the songs)
I don't think you saw what you think you saw. It was likely either guitar techs working, or additional tour musicians that aren't part of the regular band because they need extra people to play things that were multi-tracked in the studio.

Muse.

I saw them right after the release of Origin of Symmetry (in 2001?), at it was a real borefest. No interaction with the public at all, they came, did their set, and left. No encore of course. They could have put the CD in the theatre that it would have been the same thing. I've been told they were having a bad day, but I heard the same report from other gigs, so it's like they are extremely bipolar: they either do a great show or a shit one.

I went to see them again in 2010, long after I stopped caring for them, and just didn't like what I saw. It was a massive show in a stadium, with lots of props. The show was very clean, very calibrated, and as a result super boring. The stuntmen etc were impressive, they had great lights and props, but I went to watch people playing live music and all I saw was a light show. Disappointed again.

Muse was one of the best live acts i have ever seen. Just because you got bored with their music does not mean they're bad live.

I think we had a thread on this a few months ago, and I will say the same thing -- THE PIXIES.

They had no crowd involvement, not even saying "Hello NYC" for the free applause. They played song after song with no emotion on stage. The band was only there to collect their check. If I was not with my girlfriend who is a huge fan, I would have just left halfway through even though I love them as well.

The crowd also sucked. It was at a theatre with chairs, but I figured everyone stands when the band comes on right? Well, I guess not because everyone sat the whole show, and I even had some guy complaining about me standing. It totally added to the boring vibe.

Luckily, we got Debaser as the last song. To this day, I find it hard to listen to their music without thinking of that shitty performance.

Worst was Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington

I'm not a huge fan of STP, but Chester absolutely butchered those songs. I was at a music festival and the crowd was totally dead.

Best band I've ever seen is probably Breaking Benjamin and/or Green Day live.

Yeah, the Pixies at Roskilde Festival 2004 was pretty lackluster. I imagine they might have been something else first time they played there in 89 though.

Saw Kings of Leon live in Columbus in the summer of 2007 in support of their Because of the Times release.

The while band was so lifeless as they cranked through their set. You could tell they were not feeling it, even though it was a sellout and the club was rocking.

At one point the lead singer said that they didn't want to be there and they were excited for their next stop on the tour which was Bonnaroo which is in their home state of Tennessee.

The band Lupe Fiasco had when he was touring for Lasers had the on of the worst live performances I've ever seen. It didn't help that Lasers was trash but no part of that show was good. Luckily, it was free.

Edit: I almost forgot that I saw Drake live around 2007/2008 for free at OSU and he was terrible. I don't know if he has gotten any better since then but he couldn't sing to save his life.

Saw Trey Songz at Essence Fest one year and he sounded like a bad karaoke singer covering his songs.

I went to that tour, QotSA was indeed the middle band.

Have to agree on Mars Volta being terrible during it. I don't know if it was the sound mixing/engineering or what, but even as a casual fan of Mars Volta (and big fan of At The Drive-In) I couldn't understand a single thing that was being played by them. It was just a loud, completely indecipherable wall of awful sound.

I saw then in 1990ish at Bogarts in Cincinnati and they sounded great. When they reunited, it really seemed like they only did it for the money. Which is really sad. My friends who are involved in the music scene in Dayton, Ohio say that Kim is quite the junky (of course that's just a rumor). I still listen to them on vinyl occasionally, but if I saw then anytime after their reunion, I wouldn't probably listen to them.

Hey man, can't speak for anyone else, but I've done many drugs with punk legends and peons during their Bay stops .
Not with bands, but I've done enough recreational drugs with friends when I was younger. I also teach at an alternative high school and I seemed to be one of only a couple teachers who know when students come to school all tuned up.

I'll post again for the new page, as I keep seeing this one. They were bad on that tour because before the tour hey had just fired their drummer, and then a couple shows into the tour they fired the replacement drummer. Majority of those shows were with Deantoni Parks filling in and most of the set was just improv. Hell the Cleveland show was Thomas Pridgen's audition for the band which he did on the spot with no notice.

A lot of mentions for Mastodon and it's true that they're quite hit or miss. I've seen them more times than I can remember and pretty much every time there's been an issue it's always been with Brent, the guy can't sing his parts live at all without sounding like an alley cat being tortured and most times he's clearly been high af, still manages to play decently enough usually though. One time he was throwing tantrums throughout the whole thing and once he was so strung out he couldn't sing at all, Troy had to sing his parts for him and he did a way better job at it than I've ever heard Brent do. I don't understand why they let him sing on albums at all when everyone knows he can't sing live for shit.

That said I have seen them a couple of times when they've been fucking ace, though two times were in 04-05 when Troy still did pretty much all the singing anyway and the setlists were amazing, none of that mess from The Hunter back then and so much Remission goodness. No signs of tiredness either like on a lot of other occasions. Still they were pretty good just last year.

Oh I love their music. Which is why I was severely disappointed the first time I saw them. All my friends I went with were of the same opinion and a couple of people I talked about it said the same thing of other gigs. They're just not entertaining to watch live, they have no chemistry with the public. Then again, other people keep telling me they love seeing them live, so either we have different expectations or they are extremely bipolar on scene and I just had bad luck, twice.

Megadeth as part of the Big 4 tour where they toured with Anthrax, Slayer and Metallica, each band playing a gig after eachother. Megadeth was by far the worst of the four. Then again I was only there to see Metallica and wasn't a fan of any of the other bands, but they did sound kind of terrible.
Haven't seen Megadeth live but in 2014 I saw Slayer opening for Metallica and they really didn't sound good. King couldn't really sing, and the music was so muffled due to high volume on drums, couldn't really hear any guitars or anything at all. Was awful, especially since I was waiting for Metallica and it was cold and raining. Gladly Metallica saved the day again.

I've seen Mastodon a couple of times and they've been great.

Saw Eminem at reading at the height of his fame and I was devastated at how shit it was. Majority of the show was just his gang of jobber rappers doing shit, they played wee chunks of songs instead of whole tracks. They stopped for like 10 minutes to show a painfully shit south park style cartoon. Abysmal.

Smashmouth. It was a free concert playing at the county fair. So horrible. The lead singer guy was threatening that the band would leave if the crowd didn't behave better.

The guy from Dillinger Escape Plan shat in a bag and threw it into the crowd when I saw them supporting SoaD. Whoever it hit probably has a good shout for worst live experience.

InMe - Supported Serj Tankian a few years ago in London and they were just awful. The songs sounded flat, the frontman was boring and I'm glad it gave me time to go to the bar. I visibly cringed when I saw some guy have the band's name/logo tattooed on them as a tramp stamp.

Million Dead - Supported Pitchshifter in 2004. Granted, they were the first lot on stage and not everyone had entered the venue, but they too were just boring. they thought they'd be original by bringing out a bloke dressed up in a gimp outfit to stage dive, only no-one caught him. That was the best thing out of that whole experience.

Guns n' Roses - Headlined the last night of the Download Festival '06. Were so bad they incited a riot (I'm not joking, go look it up) which cost me a tent. Axl Rose threw a hissy fit because people weren't worshipping him like the god he thinks he is and stormed off stage a number of times. It was goddamn embarrassing watching him have an argument with who seemed to be his manager telling him to get back out there.

It depends on what you want from your live band. In my case, I've seen enough two-bit lead vocalists that fashioned themselves George Carlin in-between songs. So I appreciate Pixies cover-to-cover music with no breaks in between. It's pratically unique.

But I totally understand the crowd component. I saw Pixies twice in 2014 and the Oakland show was infinitely better than the SF show, as people were dancing and engaging past their cell phones.

Foo Fighters. You couldn't even make anything out, it was just a consistent wall of atonal shit. Something was being played and sang, but what it was was anyone's guess.

I just want a band that seems into their music and acknowledges the crowd. They did neither.

Crystal Castles. The lead singer showed up on stage holding what looked to be a whiskey bottle, gurgled out a couple of sounds, and then limped off stage. Their entire performance lasted about two minutes. It was pathetic.

Was this when Mike Patton was with them? I've heard some stories about him and shit. I think the song Cuckoo for Caca may be autobiographical.

Ozzy. Dude was using a TelePrompTer cuz he doesn't remember his lyrics, and he was sucking a lemon and spraying his throat between every verse. Retire already.

Yeah, I've been ignoring this little tidbit as I'm going to see Sabbath live later this year... No choice but to get hammered and just feel the riffs I guess haha.

I forget his name, but some DJ played as support for Anamanaguchi when I saw them play in Glasgow in 2014 and it was one of the worst things I have ever stood through.
The worst part being he played for 2 hours when they only did 1.

I saw them with my girlfriend at Vanderbilt Gym on the Trompe le Monde tour. I was really excited because it was a smallish venue and we had great seats. They sounded fine but there was zero crowd interaction and the whole show they gave off this vibe that they didn't want to be there or that they even liked each other. I think Black Francis went over and spoke to Joey one time but the rest of the show they stood in place and plowed through the songs. They just played through their set and left without so much as a "goodnight." I wasn't shocked when they eventually broke up and there were stories about infighting. We could have just stayed home and listened to their CDs. Really a disappointing show.

Yeah that was her gimmick. She drank Jack Daniels out of a bottle at the show I went to and like sprayed the crowd with it and they loved it. I was happy to be out of the splash zone.

Fun show though.
