Would you ever consider abandoning consoles entirely for PC in the future?

i abandoned console for PC once the 3D systems dropped. my best friend meanwhile has amassed a collection of used consoles from thrift stores (and he bought PS3/4/Wii U) so i still kept up w console games.

finally got a real job this year, so i can only see spending more money on my hobby, not less. Nintendo Switch is making a pretty compelling argument. as long as the new Mario is awesome i'll dive back into new consoles for the first time in 20 years!

No... I like having multiple systems. There have been times when I've only had a gaming PC but its great to have choice, and the ability for other members of the family to game on one platform, while another plays on something else. Last night I was playing Witcher3 on the PC and my son was playing HZD.

No. Rather buy a box for a few hundred and be good for a few years than the upgrade cycle I was in trying to keep my rig running the latest games w/ acceptable performance.

Probably not because historically I have enjoyed a lot of exclusives, but next gen I will be much less inclined to purchase a new Sony or Microsoft machine early in the life cycle. I bought a PS4 at launch while really didn't get much use until the end of 2015/early 2016 and even that was sporadic as I played everything multiplatform on PC. I bought my XB1 in fall of 2014 for Forza Horizon 2 and Sunset Overdrive and it has sat unplugged ever since as FH3 also hit PC. I should have just stuck with PC+Wii U and waited for the slim/pro before jumping in.

I don't think that every worthwhile exclusive will ever be playable on PC, so no. It will come close, especially thanks to emulation, but it will probably never completely happen.

I don't think so because of the exclusives, but if PS4 pulled a Play Anywhere move then I wouldn't need consoles anymore.

No.

There are always games on them that don't come to PC and I prefer actual hardware to emulation too. Or you get a USP that the PC can't do like Switch's portability.

I am always tempted but I think I'll always want to play the exclusives so I'll probably always have a console. But I'd love to have a Vive set up one day.

What hassle? Because my experience has been largely hassle free.

Depends on the person though, you can get plenty of hassle.

My most recent one was sitting down to play Elite Dangerous and the game refusing to acknowledge my controller in game but was fine in menus. Spent ages trying to get that working again.

It's not too hard to find the little idiosyncrasies of PC use if you think back but you generally accept that as part of the experience. I do. Sometimes it is particularly irritating - I've mentally benched the likes of LA Noire and Enslaved thanks to the issues I experienced there, but I am happy with the experience I have now.

No. I like the knowledge that the games I buy are guaranteed to actually work.

You say that, but more often than not console games have performance issues.

Very true, I've had problems with controllers not connecting etc too, but I honestly haven't had more problems than I would with a console, which also can be annoying.

No. I have too much fondness for the PlayStation brand and a lot of my favourite gaming memories are tied to experiences with their systems.

In a heartbeat.

Hopefully this "apple-like" restrictive use of your device is only a fluke.. I've always felt consoles are just dumbed down for fun.. but sadly it's becoming the norm.

...and I prefer actual hardware to emulation too.

By the time console games are emulated on PC, the emulation is usually a 100% improvement over the base hardware.

Just look at old Nintendo games running at high resolution and with improved anti-alising. You can even aff post processing effects to get that pixel perfect, scna lines and all old school retro feel that you would only get if you still had some monstrous old CRT TV lying around somewhere.

The biggest and cheapest library by far (not even comparable to any console). Better graphics, better variety of games and unlimited range of peripherals.

I have a Xbox One S but it is only used to play UHD BR

when I was a kid i tried playing GTA 3 on PC. i'm just not really fond of playing video games on my computer you know, it's just something about having a console in your home

huh? I'd like to go the other way. Abandon PC for a Switch-like mobile/comfy couch hybrid.

Yes. I don't have emotional connections to multi-billion dollar corporations. The more control I have over how I choose to consume my media the better. If there were no exclusives on consoles that I wanted, or they were all available on PC, I'd gladly go PC-only.

Realistically, that won't happen. The exclusives model works far too well for Sony/MS/Nintendo.

Most of my favorite games are either Nintendo or Sony exclusives and I'm not interested in MOBAs and strategy games, so I will stick with my PS/ Nintendo combo for the next 30 years or so.

PC is my platform of choice, but as long as consoles have exclusive games that I want to play, I won't abandon them. I will say I have used my XB1 sparingly since Play Anywhere became a thing.

Give me the PS and Nintendo exclusives on PC and I will jump to PC as soon as possible.

The only reason I play on PC right now is for mods and the obscure indies. I don't even have a gaming PC but an okay Laptop which can play PS360 level games decently.

The other reason for me not going all in on PC is the fact that your top of the line parts will be 2nd fiddle within a year. I'm OCD in the fact that I want to get the best possible versions of the games I will buy. I have a Wii U but I still bought a Switch for Zelda. I had a PS4 but sold it for getting the Pro(which I don't have yet cause supply fucking sucks). If I had been PC only then I would probably eating ramen noodles all my life just to make ends meet.

No. I have a PC and it is essential to me, but I don't use it for gaming. There are dedicated machines for that. My PC is just that: A personal computer.

Same goes for my mobile phone for example. It's for contacting people, not gaming or photography or whatever.

I already stopped caring for xbox because its games on pc. But i cant leave sony and nintendo exclusives. If MS didnt go with the play anywhere prgram i would have bought (kept)the xbox ( i mean seriously what kind of stupid program is this ? They basically killed xbox for anyone with half decent pc/ laptop)

But yeah whatever. I buy consoles for exclusives. And multiplatform games on pc for dirt cheap down the road unless its super important multiplatform game then i buy it on consoles and pc later

Another reason i an sticking with consoles is because i am a collector to a point. I dont have super amazing collection. Maybe a total of 70? Games on total ( only started recently ) so i like to built my gaming room around that

Funny how the more general purpose COMPUTING platform is better at gaming than the specialized gaming platform.

:p

I considered that once actually, but it appears a lot of really good games are still console only so I don't think I want to go PC only

I'm considering the opposite actually. Next gen I'll just game on consoles mainly with the occasional PC game in between.

Yep, I've started this year. Wii U and PS4 were my last consoles.

I play on PC way more than PS4 or Wii U. Although, Breath of the Wild is a fun game. I don't see much of my future console gaming any more. Most of my gaming genres are PC based, or suit the mouse and keyboard better.

Never.

Yoy have too much hassle with personal computers, lots of drivers issues, have to upgrade every six months to stay relevant, ugly cases, viruses, you have to sit on a chair and use a mouse and keyboard to play (lol who could want to play this way?)

not sure if i'll be buying an xbox next gen if they keep moving their games to PC. definitely in for a PS5 though.

I am currently undecided on whether to wait for a switch price drop or wait for whatever Nintendo's next console is.

That's funny, unless you use an underpowered laptop. I use a PC for my computer development and server work. The same PC is also able to do high end gaming, without a hitch. It's a one machine with multiple purposes.

That's just like saying that I don't watch Netflix on a PS4 as its a dedicated gaming machine and not a media streaming device.

I already answered this thread before the bump, but I have more thoughts now that the Switch has come out.

The immediacy of the Switch - being able to go from sleep mode into Zelda within 3 seconds or so - just feels so convenient. The graphics are also good enough at this point even on a (mostly) handheld system especially when docked. I can't see myself ever needing a PC again as long as the games get ported.

The convenience of having my games everywhere in such a compact, and most importantly, quiet device is exactly what I want from my gaming experience.

PC gaming feels too cumbersome and not as slick in comparison.

You forgot "/s", surely.

Always grew up on consoles, loved them, but slowly grew bored of them and switched over to PC. Never looked back. Actually bought a ps4 for playing with friends at christmas, sold it within a month. Cant get used to the controller and i used to love the ps3 one. Shame really but i could never go back to console...even for exclusives. My digital library consists of steam/orign/uplay/rockstar. Couple of clicks and im playing a multitude of games.

Gotta love digital...and backwards compatability!

Japanese third parties would really need to give PC more emphasis than they have for that to happen for me. I know they've improved, but when games like FFXV and Persona 5 don't come to PC, there's no chance that I can go PC only. Even if they do eventually catch up, another problem is Nintendo games for me. I could foresee a future where I don't get a ps5, but never one where I don't get new Nintendo hardware.

I was exclusive PC until the switch. I could see myself going back to exclusive PC in a little bit. My gaming laptop is light enough that even for co-op it takes just a bit longer to set up then bringing a console.

I was a big console gamer last gen and now only PC.

Can't say I even consider going back just for a couple of exclusives

It's exactly the same for me when it comes to PC. I used to play on PC, between 2003-2006, when the FPS games were missing from the PS2, but I can't imagine ever going back there.

There's only a few horror indie games, that I'll be missing on the PS4. I'm not at all interested in the RTS, sims, MOBAs, and MMORPGs that are currently only available on PC.

If that's your metric, surely so does other console gaming. You really just want to go full handheld. Which I cna appreciate, except some of my favorite games would never work in hand held, or atleast not for another 10 years or so.

Never.

I can hook up my PC just fine on my tv and sit on my couch to play some games with a controller. I do that regularly actually.

Never.

Just prefer to plug and play.

Sadly, this just isn't the case anymore. PCs are becoming more accessible and consoles are becoming more convoluted. Soon enough the experiences will be close to parity and the choice becomes a question of power and library.

Never.

Just prefer to plug and play.

To plug an play, and wait for huge load times, and hope that the game doesn't drop to 20 FPS nd wait for huge install times too, and mess with (limited) grpahics options now with the PRo and Scorpio coming, and wonder what those options actually mean because they are vague as hell and you have to dig through patch notes to hopefully, maybe find out.

Plug and play is not an accurate term for modern consoles in comparison to PC. Not anymore.

I'm pretty much there already. Nintendo WiiU is the only console I use. Won't be getting a Switch until next summer. Won't be playing on a console after I'm finished with Zelda.

The XB1 makes a good case as to why you should go PC only, but you're missing out on a lot with the other systems... that is, if you care at all about Sony and Nintendo franchises, which I know is really convenient to say you don't in a thread like this.

As long as there are games I want to play that I can't play anywhere else, I'll buy what it takes to play them, whether that's PC, console, handheld, or mobile.
