I emailed GOG support on what their policy is regarding refunds that aren't stemming from technical issues and got a response back with "Do you want cash or store credit?".

O.O

I wonder how many refund requests they're getting?

Lol

Emailer: 'excuse me, id just like to ask about your policy on refun...'

GOG: 'Ahh No Mans Sky right, cash or credit sir'?

Buyer Beware is just as right as Consumer protection.

No, it's not.

Some people are going to take advantage here, but it's a one time refund on PSN. I can pretty much guarantee that this isn't the last time a dev deliberately misrepresents their game to overhype and grab some cash.

Lol

That has actually happened several times here already with a refund done through PSN live chat. In one case they actually posted the transcript and they didn't even mention the name of the game when they gave the refund! lol

I saw this thread a few days ago, and again this morning which made me say, "To hell with it. Let me see if I can get a refund for this". I purchased it on Aug 10th, and have about 25+ hours of play time on it. I have access keys 1 & 2, fully upgraded multi-tool, over 8mil in credits, and warped about 20 times, so I've played enough to know that I don't enjoy playing it.

Bought it digitally on PS4, so I contacted PSN Store via chat. Explained to them that the game has issues, especially with crashing constantly, and that it's really not fun to play at all. After some time, they basically said, "All sales are final, but they are going to give me a refund as a one-time Gesture of Goodwill". All I have to do now is just delete the game off my HDD.

So there it is. I may have just gotten lucky, but I now have a $59.99 refund credit added to my PSN account. I took a chance, and I am real happy about. Now, to decide what game should I spend that money on. Any recommendations?

You should buy a sense of right and wrong

Anyone else who's had a UK refund from PSN have to get a case number from Hello Games?

This is my second email response:

Isn't there live chat support for PSN UK?

Anyone else who's had a UK refund from PSN have to get a case number from Hello Games.
No. Hello Games does not answer support e-mails unless you're sending them crash dmps and even then it's unlikely you're going to get an answer since they're a staff of 15 and nobody is checking any mailboxes.

I think you need to try getting to the livechat on the American website because clearly PSN Europe is a pile of lies. Reference number for a refund lmao what kind of nonsense is that.

This whole debacle shows the scummy side of developers promising things they can't achieve and not being honest about it and also just how seriously toxic large parts of the industry are on the consumer side.

As much as the NMS end product makes me shake my head at Hello Games and Sean Murray a lot of the responses and aggression from gamers makes me want to pack the hobby in and live on another planet (no pun intended). People are fucking toxic and disgusting cretins.

It's no wonder I'm largely a SP gamer as the thought of playing alongside lots of the douchbag gamers (the death threat/abuse assholes) is a trial in testing ones sanity. Even some replies about NMS on GAF, a fairly liberal and largely respectable community are just.....

As for refunds consumers need such an option in this digital world, but playing a game for 10+ hours and asking for one? GTFO of here.

If a game becomes increasingly unstable the more you go into the game, you deserve a refund.

In one case, the starter system was fine and they stayed there for a while but after leaving it, the game started becoming more unstable and crashing all the time.

So the game becomes something one can't complete (ie get to the center of the galaxy) due to the game being unplayable through NO FAULT of your own.

See the op with the error list image that shows the game crashing every 10 - 30 minutes.

The game should work start to finish and if it doesn't, then a refund is deserved.

Buyer Beware is just as right as Consumer protection. Both sides will take advantage, just as is being shown here.

If this is sarcasm, bravo for triggering everyone.

If not, you have a deep problem.

I havent been in this thread for quite a while but i can see some people still havent learned that asking for a refund in this situation is acceptable even after 10 hours.

If people are getting serious crashing and can't finish the game like that one guy who had it crash every 40 minutes and Hello Games hasn't been able to fix it then yeah, by all means they should get a refund. But if you play a game for 10 hours and decide you don't like it then I think we're approaching ME3 levels of 'should you really get a refund?', i.e. I didn't like the ending but I played the whole thing so I want my money back.

Unless you want to admit you are a gamer that hurls abuse, death threats and other nasty shit, your point is? Quite clear who my ire is aimed at. The same crazy fucks Jim Sterling tears a new one and then sees swamp to his twitter feed to call him names. Some of them are actually defenders of the game, as in the crowd who go apeshit when he gives it 5/10.

For technical reasons on PC, sure. PS4 version seems fairly stable. If you manage to play for over 10 hours on the PS4 and amass a load of trophies, then either you're some sort of masochist for playing that much of a game you apparently "don't like" or an opportunist hopping on now for your money back after playing a ton.

Main message for gamers is stop fucking pre-ordering games. Wait until reviews and impressions hit. It's not rocket science. I have avoided NMS after being as hyped as everyone else was as when reviews hit I thought nah, this sounds like shit for £40+.

I havent been in this thread for quite a while but i can see some people still havent learned that asking for a refund in this situation is acceptable even after 10 hours.

If you say so, but largely I think people are hopping on to abuse wanting a refund of something they've poured hours into but feel unsatisfied. Personally I'd have seen the reviews, put about an hour or two into my pre-order when it unlocked and thought nah, I want a refund. Not waited weeks and played tons and then decided to ask for my money back.

That's at least more debatable but I'd still say companies should be held to account for false advertisement. Be it via refunds or by an independent company like BBC Watchdogs or something that should look into claims of false advertisements.

But like I said, the refund part is at least more debatable there. The broken game with crashes every 10 - 30 minutes or so however is not debatable imo.

I wouldn't say that's stable. (look at the time stamps) (this is from the first page in the thread)

Again, it's like Skyrim which the more you go into the game, the more it becomes unstable.

In this case, the starter system is stable but the more you go into it, the more crashes that happened for some people. Stuff that's beyond one's control which can in turn make it so one can't complete the game/get to the end goal.

And since it's a digital product, you can't replace it because it's not a "the disc is scratched" thing, it's to do with the game itself.

So a refund is the only option for a game you can't complete.

Haven't a lot of the PS4 crashes been fixed? I mean if not and they are still that bad, today, the 29th of August fair enough. If they were largely fixed and people are wanting a refund now then my points stand. You ask for a refund when the product is broken, or shortly after it has been fixed if you're still frustrated. Not weeks later.

The dates on those crashes are the 13th of August so you can let me know if it is still that bad today, as as I said above I never bought the game on PS4 (or at all).

Given that it sounds like the PC version is still technical trash, I understand those refunds.

Honestly this is just horribly presented product, and frankly I don't think that anyone should have thought this game was remotely going to be good.

From the second I saw the game at its reveal there was something fishy about it all.

I've heard that some people are still having major issues, but for most the crashes have been reduced significantly with every patch. Personally I still get the odd crash (PS4), but it's about on par with what I got with Doom, for instance, like once every 5-10 hours.

I don't know if they are, I'm just using it as an example since some people seem to think that you are not allowed a refund even if a product is broken and it hasn't been fixed.

I just object to the possibility that "Who cares if it's broken as long as you had x number of hours out of it".

I mean Skyrim PS3 could last 50 - 100 hours before it becomes so unplayable that the only way to fix it would be to start a new game. I wouldn't object to people getting a refund in that situation.

I'm sure other people who have played the PS4 version of NMS can answer if it's still that bad or not, I'm just objecting to the idea that an arbitrary number of hours played can excuse a broken product.

----

And on a side note: I still think an official body like the BBC Watchdogs or someone should hold HG to account for false advertisement (and being based in the UK helps there as well since they have to be held to UK advertisement standards), But I doubt that will happen.

Skyrim was a special kind of broken, but yeah if NMS was like that on PS4 I wouldn't object.

False advertising in games needs clamped down on, but no one ever does shit about it. Hence why as I said above to everyone, stop pre-ordering games with release day embargoes. Games are not going to sell out on shelves FFS. If you can't resist and feel you've been missold on day 1/when reviews hit, put your refund request in right away. Don't expect much sympathy if you decide to plow in 20 hours to a game knowing it has under delivered. Technical issues are a matter of their own, your personal disappointment at a non-delivering product is different.

Maybe they've been advised to just stay quiet about this whole debacle and the extremely anti-consumer bullshit they pulled but I really wonder if Hello Games will not even release any sort of statement about the missing features, crashes, misleading trailers, and lying in interviews. Because the longer they stay quiet, the less respect the industry will have for them.

So did you actually have issues with it crashing constantly, or did you just say that to get the refund?

I actually had issues with it crashing. There were times where it would crash, then I would start it back up, load the recent save file, then in about 2 mins crash again. This happened a few times. Sometimes, it would go over an hour before it happened again. It was an issue. I got tired of that, as well as playing the game. I don't see an issue requesting a refund for that. If I bought a hard copy I would have been trade it in. Just a lesson learnt about buying digital copies.

Absurd.

This game is exactly what I've seen shown in recent footage.

No, it doesn't match the early footage but it's still the game they advertised. An expansive, infinite game where you explore procedurally generated planets with not much else to do. A heavy MP focus wasn't what this game was going to be.

This is my first post in this thread, but just wanted to say that Ive always favoured buyer beware over consumer rights. I believe that companies should have the right to lie/mislead in their marketing (to an extent). The market should correct this. The press has the right to give unfair negative reviews. Word of mouth will spread, especially in a world with internet. Companies that do this should fail.

I'm a person who always blames myself. If I bought a shitty product, I should have read more reviews. Why didn't I check the yelp reviews before going to this restaurant? That's on me. I bought Brute Force on day one, and was so mad at myself for not waiting for more reviews to come in.

For the rest of my life, companies are going to lie to me to try and get my money, and I support that! Of course we need consumer rights in terms of safety, etc. But I also like having the choice between a nice $10 stapler, or a shitty $1 stapler from the dollar store.

This is incredible.

We can at least agree there :)

(though I pre-order games because it's very very rare that I've ever been burned. But like some people say, I'm too easy to please and like everything >___>. Still I get burned occasionally lol, just not that often because I know what games I like :p)

It is up to the devs to correctly state what is or isn't going to be in the game pre-release, right up to weeks before release if something has changed. Don't be so naive and obtuse. You are the other side of this whole mess that seemingly cannot critically examine what NMS/HG and Sean Murray did do wrong. As I said above crazy defenders and the criticisers who go nuclear all amount to this shitshow of a circus surrounding NMS.

It's the worst game release I've seen in a while, and also the worst mess I've seen from the extreme defenders and extreme critisers in a while. The whole thing is a toxic mess.

I'm playing exactly the game that was advertised to me. The concept which sold me from the start.

Only after playing it do I yearn for more content, none of which was hinted at or shown and then removed.

People bought a game and expected more than was promised and point to different textures and effects as if any of it amounted to a different kind of game they dreamed up in their minds.

Good for you, but to deny many feel mis-sold because you are having fun is to be purposely self-serving when there is plenty of evidence to show there are legitimate complaints.

Sure my biggest piece of advice for everyone is stop fucking pre-ordering, but that doesn't mean I am putting on blinders to the clear lies, smoke screens and missing content from the game.

Why would they be advised to stay quiet though? Why weren't WB/Rocksteady/IG advised to stay quiet about Arkham Knight? Doesn't make much sense.

One reason I can think of is money, but it's just quick money - in exchange for their reputation. Their reputation is basically damaged for all eternity, and more so each day passing without a statement of some kind.

They should've bit the bullet and communicated with their fans.

There's no excuse for this.
