WOW OMG: Steam is refunding No Man's Sky even if you played more then 2 hours

Knowledge is power, guard it well
Good to know, for the future, that any game I develop only has to work smoothly for maybe 3 hours, then Steam won't let my customers get their money back.

I guess the only reason Arkham Knight turned out differently, was because the publisher stepped into the situation.
Let's not forget the whole day one patch adds in all the real game play stuff missing from early copies. Lol so the early warnings were shut out by that. Also those tweets about not spoiling the game for yourself by watching others LOL

This is what bothers me most. Up until the last moment possible, he kept up his attempts to suppress the truth of what NMS really was.

Sean Murray absolutely is a deceitful asshole, and his whole team is complicit in the lies. If you willingly and knowingly profit from the leader of your company's lies, yeah you're just as dirty. Even moreso, with a team this small. Until one of them steps up and reveals what conversations went on behind the scenes, it's only fair to assume they were all in on it.

Man I can understand people who played for a few hours getting a refund but people who played it for like 30 hours? That's just abusing the system. Did they break the game or something in an update aka Pokemon go?

Of course every bit of PR will sell you a dream, that's what adverts do. And tbh plenty of us knew the game would turn out like this based on what they showed us.

Sean Murray should step down, try to save some credibility (if any) they have left, then HG should sort the mess out, they cant really do it with him there after all the B/S he has said.

Hello Games is Sean's company. He owns it. He sold his house to fund it. He just delivered the 5th biggest video game launch ever, across all platforms (#2 on PlayStation, behind Uncharted). You think the best business decision is to sell his company because he upset somebody on a forum?

Leave it to gamers to taken things too far/seriously.

Seriously. My take away from this who debacle is that I will likely not buy any HG games in the future and will take anything Sean Murray says with a huge grain of salt (Molyneaux levels). I'm not going to cast judgment on a group of people who worked their asses off on a product that was way oversold by their boss.

I suppose by this metric, everyone that worked on GODUS and Broken Age are also shitlords. /s

35 pages in and we are still get these posts? Many people who have put a substantial amount of game time have been reporting that the game no longer works for them and that they experience lots of crashes.

If the game doesn't work, you should get a refund - period.

I will be shocked if Hello Games is still a thing in a year, either completely disbanded or changed names (that won't help them). Weren't there rumours Sony wanted to buy them? Bullet dodged if so.

You are being overdramatic. I'm sure they're doing fine and will continue to do fine.

If you're in the U.K. For steam or psn just threaten to go the ombudsman. Whenever you win or lose the case steam or psn will automatically get charged £500. The company in the end would rather give the refund than pay a pointless investigation charge even if they win.

Only do this if they flat out and finally refuse to give a refund, you need to exhaust all options first.

Can't exactly trawl through 69 pages in my case! That info should be in the OP/title which just makes it sounds like a cheeky cash grab.

Steam really should look at reforming their refund policy to better align with country standards. I know here in Australia we have the ACCC to protect us from a consumer point of view but it would be nice if what we have was standard across all countries. At least with GoG (and it seems Sony with NMS) it was just a straight up "here's your refund, don't abuse it to get free games."

How about the idea that no matter the time played a customer can still ask for a refund without being belittled?

Uhm, companies don't automatically get charged £500 if somebody complains. Source: I work for a company.

I didn't buy through Steam, but didn't want to start a thread to write this. After worrying is be stuck with a game I want to return outside of trade-in credit, I tried Amazon.com's return item option since I bought a PS4 physical copy from them. I wrote in that the game crashes back to home screen, and it gave me the options to either replace the item or return it. I chose the return option and soon after I got an email telling me that the return has been accepted and that once they get the item, they will refund full value I paid in the method I'd paid for it. Sounds like a good option for those who bought this way and want to return it.

Posted yet? Dream dead?

A dozen times and I don't know what dream would be dead based upon Steam posting the refund policy which has been in place since day one.

They put it there because they were receiving (and denying) a ton of requests for refund, obviously.

Oof, bad timing - PlayStation Australia just posted a video with the tagline "18,446,744,073,709,551,616 planets to explore". The comments are absolutely savage. Wow.

I'm in the middle of putting together a tutorial on how to file a complaint towards HG through the Better business bureau and in conjunction through econsumer.gov and am at the part where I tell my story, I am going to include all of the evidence of misinformation and before I go back through everything and make a list I was wondering if any of you had one already other than the obvious reddit list stuff and NMS threads which is what I plan on using? Might save me some time.

I'm also going to do a separate on with all of the bugs and crashes. That falls under a different category so I don't think I can add that to this one.

Eh, might not be that Murray oversold it. The employees could well have thought they were going to have something done by launch but didn't, and didn't say it to the boss. Happens in businesses all the time, could well have happened at HG too. Sean could just be like one of those bosses that doesn't get his hands dirty nor have an accurate idea of what his team is doing.

I think that's going a bit too far.

The only thing that matters here is they stick to their promise of supporting the game. Fix the technical issues, add new features and improve the core game. I don't want them to disband or change name or anyone to step down. The radio silence isn't good but I can imagine all the toxic stuff being thrown at Sean must keep him off the internet. I can't blame him for that. They do need some PR though.

Considering the company size, he knew. Especially given the certification time to get a title shipped.

Got a link? Or have they taken it down?

Also I googled "18,446,744,073,709,551,616 planets to explore" from past hour and got one single google result - your post!

I like that Steam offers refunds while under 2 hours played, it's a good service. But when people put 10, 20 and especially 50 hours to a game, there really shouldn't be any demands of refunds.

That being said, there are exceptions ofcourse. And from what I've read and seen, No man's sky seems to be one of those that I feel should be refunded even after 2 hours of playtime. Since it's not only a technical mess but was (is) falsely advertised. But I wouldn't remove the playtime restriction even on this case, I would simply raise it higher. Maybe 6-10 hours for example. After that time anyone playing should really have an understanding how the game performs and if they can live with it.

Full disclosure, I've personally used Steam refund for atleast 3 games. All my refunding reasons have been gameplay related. All my refunds are based on under an hour of playtime.

Edit: Another exception I would make for the 2 hour restriction is ofcourse Arkham Knight. These two are the ones I can think of right now.

Just an update with my uphill battle with Playstation Australia. Of course, the refund was denied and I called to understand why, and now I can see that the support team have been told exactly what to say. They know about Playstation America giving refund, but currently it is not the position of Playstation Europe (Australia is under "under" Europe, 'badumtish!'), that they will not be giving refund at any moment and, the thing is, she kept repeating the same long paragraph, over and over, they probably have a memo on how to deal with fanboys.

Next step, Department of Commerce for Western Australia.

He was one of the four original programmers on the game.

Sounds like Hello Game's problem. Not anyone elses.

And what's with Sean Murray? Now we're throwing out theories to deflect the blame to his employees also? When did this dude become Indie Jesus? Or is this some kind of mass Stockholm syndrome phenomena?

https://www.facebook.com/PlayStationAU/

It's from Aug 22 if you scroll down- it came up in my feed as a 'your friends liked Playstation Australia' and it has about 1300 comments - the majority are pretty brutal lol.

Haha as I was typing this the video looped and is showing "And the answer to the question... what lies at the center?" #oop

Hey, tone it down. Whats with the personal attacks?

I thought it was single statement time.

Back on subject is Sony and Valve closing in on refunds now that this has become more mainstream?

I honestly think that patches from Hello and them being more transparent about the situation could help with the situation.

Wait, so suggesting he might *not* be entirely to blame is now Stockholm Syndrome?

Wow.

It seems like they are. Not surprising they are clamping down on it after all those headlines. Probably got totally swamped with refund requests.

I'd be curious to see numbers.

The saddest part is I really like the concept of this game. I liked Spore.

Even though I like the game I don't believe it gets a pass and this situation should be looked into. The fact that Sony actually did refunds on digital copies shocks me. Especially in America land of no digital refunds.

Perhaps we will eventually see better refund policies... Who knows.

So I booted the game up tonight to see if my access had been revoked yet, since I've never had a digital copy refunded from Amazon. This is how my game loaded.

Both save slots are like this. To escape this, I would have to deconstruct all my survival gear and let myself die on the planet. However, it's not a very toxic planet, so it would probably take a while.

I'm so relieved I was able to get the refund; if I had been rejected and then came home to this, I would have been super pissed. Game's now completely uninstalled from my PS4 and I'm glad to be done with it.

I really do hope that Hello Games can eventually get the game back on track to what they initially wanted/advertised it to be; if they can, maybe I'll revisit it when the price drastically drops, but otherwise will be staying far away.
