You are possibly right. However, my friends used the same reasoning i.e. "False advertising, and no online play" and he got a refund as well. His account is less than a year old and that's the only digital game he owns.

No reasoning matters as all convos are logged which means said agent is going to get in trouble if they are found giving a refund for a non-reason. So if you come off sounding like a complete dumbass who just wants free stuff yeah you are gonna get shut down. Its all about how you present yourself and case to said agent. And even then you could get stuck with a total shitbird that is non-cooperative which then you will just have to roll the dice again.
But most def these types of situations are reliant on how you present yourself once again.

Its kind of like the Matrix game, where it came out the gate and sold a ton but word of mouth was terrible, sales flatlined and its looked back on as a massive failure and a bad game.
NMS had so much hype I would be surprised if it DIDNT have strong sales. the new deus ex was mechanically very similar to the prior game and starred the same character, and didnt get massively hyped since its not an entirely new, never before seen game that gets people excited for the unknown promise.
personally as long as deux ex meets or beats the company expectations, is profitable and we get another one I will be happy.
I actually quite like NMS, as an indie game (ie I think if this game was $30 and didnt have all the hype it would be a cult hit)

Name some names so the rest can be aware of who's willing to ship a shoddy product and expect to leave the consumer hanging since they played it "enough"

This is utter nonsense. This has nothing at all to do with this being an "indie" project. This is about a game sold on the back of false promises, that only became clear upon playing it, and something that is technically deficient on top of everything else. Creators like Blow and Fish created games that people adore, and whatever you think of them, the kind of accusations being throw at NMS are in no way related. This isn't some kind of indie issue.
If this was a AAA game that had these same sort of issues, you'd be seeing just as much irritation being thrown at it.

"50 hours" without context certainly does make seeking a refund suspect. When you consider however the huge amount of documented crashes and errors during that time and pair it with the type of game NMS is, it makes a lot more sense.
That said, if you play a game for 50 hours and realize it's a bad game, I don't think you deserve a refund. That just sucks that you got a bad game. If you play a game for 50 hours and realize its a broken mess devoid of features that were marketed and influential on your decision to buy the game, you absolutely have a case for refunding it.
Skyrim in my opinion is an example of the first, NMS is an example of the second. (That said, it only took me about 10 hours with NMS to realize it was an empty shell of what had been promised. Unfortunately, that's still well beyond the refund window as it currently exists. Hopefully I'll still be able to get one through Steam. Edit: Just had mine denied. I'll have to see what I can do to push on it. I've never sought a refund before, but I feel strongly about this.)

A universe exploration simulator that doesn't even have stars, has a fake skybox, is not actually connected in the slightest so all you can do is teleport from one "level" to the other, no gravitational changes, no rotation, and a bunch of other mishaps.
It's not much of a simulator of anything sadly.
I'm still baffled why context is lost on people. His repliers seem to think I refunded the game because I didn't like the game, so I still have to defend myself. It's getting tiring and I think I need to learn to just ignore what people say.

The whole "one time gesture of goodwill" bit from Sony about refunds isn't really true. I was denied a refund due to already having received one in the past. Tried live chat again a few hours later and was given a refund easily.

OK. I understand the clarification. However "keep the consumers educated" and "establish laws to protect consumers" are not mutually exclusive. And each has several advantages over the other and thus act as complement to each other.
Members of gaf are more savvy about video games, or technology to various degrees. So some can call out the bullshit and shenanigans put up by shady developers. But these are not the preys of the con business man. They feed on the uninformed, which are the vast majority of consumers. Ask yourself whether you are as knowledgeable in ALL OTHER areas of consumer products as video games. What about used cars? real estate market? financial products? There are expert businessman with high degrees and experiences in each industry that are trying to get money out of your pocket. Does each consumer have to be armed with expertise in all aspect of life to avoid all the sophisticated traps devised by each company? You might argue that business won't have any longevity if they keep their customers burnt. But in a lot of cases consumers don't even know they have better options for a long time. And investment bankers in the Wall Street proves that even after lies with literally disastrous consequences can be glossed over. This is why we have to have laws and regulations to protect consumers because they are always the party with unfair disadvantages in the transaction.
I agree with you that just thinking a game is bad shouldn't be an automatic refund, but when you say Skyrim is an example of that, I can't agree. I bought it on PS3 and after several dozen hours (can't really remember), it reached the point where the frame rate dropped to single figures, it crashed several times an hour and took ages to load. When I asked for a refund, it wasn't because I thought it was a bad game, I really like Skyrim, my issue was that it was a technical mess and I couldn't play it! After one patch it then auto-froze whenever I entered the water. That was the point at which I asked for a refund and looked forward to going back to it a year later when I'd be able to actually play it past a certain point.
Do you think I shouldn't have had a refund in that case? It seems fairly similar to the OP's issue to me.
