Wuchang: Fallen Feathers |OT| Saving dat pirate booty

This game is top shelf. If you're sick of the auto pilot baby mode souls games or crap gameplay, then this one is for you.

There's so many smart systems in play, everything after the first hour wants your asshole shredded, and the combat feels soooooo good.

I imagine the usual Steam review bombing shit:
Some kind of anti pirate program in it
Some kind of performance bug
Game crashing

Those 3 will usually instantly nuke a game without anything to do with the game proper.

I can tell you on ps5 pro it's been a blast,

Yes its the performance

I've been testing for half an hour so far and I have zero stuttering or performance issues, the game runs well on the latest drivers.

That being said I am playing it on a 4090 so I guess I am not the average steam user

I'm all up in that Wuchang

Step 1 was to turn off HDR, doesn't look good at all, much better after that with Brightness setting on 2, results will obviously vary based on your TV/settings, I'm on LG OLED.

The combat so far is a blast, it feels different compared to other Souls which is extremely welcomed to avoid genre exhaustion and the graphics are amazing, it looks really good

That being said, DLSS on pc dont work right. I had to change to TSR

How does it feel different?

Mechanically or feeling?

Buongiorno papi. The game feels more like Wukong Black Myth rather than a typical SoulsLike, like for example Lies of P or Nioh

I personally prefer this one more because it feels unique when controlling the character and attacking. Most soulslikes has the same type of feeling when it comes to how the character control and for me it's just too familiar at this point.

That being said I played only one hour so I am not sure what to make of the game so far. The environments are beautiful btw

That sound good, i'm very burned out by fromsoft feeling soulslikes.

Why is this overwhelmingly negative on steam lol? Everyone complaining about performance issues yet its silky smooth for me. Are steam players trying to play a new UE5 game on 6 years old GPUs and getting bad performance or what? Im getting over 100 maxed out with DLSS quality and have 0 stutters. Steam reviews are fucking worthless as usual

DLSS works just fine for me? Are you on latest driver?

Yes. Noticed the shimmering in areas with buildings. DLSS is not acting properly and I noticed right away. As soon as I changed to TSR all sorts of aliasing were removed.

That being said, I am very sensitive to aliasing so my perception is very high but I am positive that something is wrong with the implementation at least on Steam

What resolution and graphics card are you using?

Thank you Stellar Blade:

Now for substance because that's all that *really* matters to me. This isn't on the level of WuKong, not even close. Not in it's visuals, not in it's presentation, not in it's combat feel, not in it's level design, not in anything really so we still have a ways to go before we can truly call China a major player on the world stage (Phantom Blade 0 is a lot more promising). After a few hours it's what I expected, a solid 7/10 Souls-like to keep me entertained for a few dozen hours. My opinion can obviously change overtime so let's see what happens.

As a new entry within the Souls genre I wouldn't put it on the same tier as Nioh 2, Lies of P or even Khazan but it does do some things I find unique/appreciate. For one transmog is available from the start, re-skin any piece of equipment to anything else you own, fashion Souls ftw. It's approach to leveling up/skills takes a page out of the FFX playbook reminding me of the Sphere Grid, wasn't expecting that. No stamina consumption outside of combat (take note Khazan/Lies of P devs for potential sequels). Different weapon types are cool and can vary even within the same family, just got a spear that has totally different attack animations then the one I was using previously. Protagonist is hot, that counts for something!

Anyway, back to it, smoked the first major boss on my first attempt and became friends with a fluffy animal offering treasures, good times.

Edit: will add performance on Pro has been pretty solid, some occasional hitching, nothing major, visuals are nothing to write home about, some nice environments, very linear so far (I don't mind it).

Nice,so the performance i was reading about yesterday is way off.I have a 9070XT,so hopefully get around the same
I only lowered the shadows from extreme to high, because that tends to eat up a lot of fps with minimal visual gain in games and im over 100 fps maxed out so yeah... steam reviews are way off or people trying to play this on 6 years old GPUs. Also the game has 0 stutters and it has perfect framepacing so far

Good to hear.Hopefully I can get Optiscaler to work as it only comes with DLSS,AMD are taking the piss again

Just played 3 hours of Wuchang and I didn't expect to enjoy it so much! Playing it on Graphics mode (ps5 Pro) with uncapped framerates on my LG G1. So far so good!

Wukong is just as demanding if not more and it doesn't have all these negative reviews. Something doesn't add up.

I don't get all the complaints about optimization, because for me the game runs super smooth on max settings with FSR at 1440p. Sure, visually it's kinda average - I'd say last-gen level - but the scenery and atmosphere are really nice.
I've already taken down two bosses and they weren't much of a challenge - went down in 1-2 tries.
As for combat, I've got mixed feelings. Enemies seem to have some weird hyper armor, like you can keep stabbing them and they'll just finish their attack animation no matter what.
And going into water = instant death :messenger_grinning:. What's even in there, acid?:messenger_grinning_sweat: There's no explanation for it in the story.
Biggest plus so far? Exploration. Reviews were right - it's got that DS1 vibe. Lots of interconnected areas, shortcuts leading back to earlier zones… love it.

The game looks like an asset flip of Wukong, which is probably full of asset flips anyway,. The icons, the menus, the generic sounds, the environments, and more. I was shocked how reminiscent of Wukong it is and had to look to see that it wasn't the same developer.

Seriously, who thought putting sprint on B was a good idea? It's such a pain – you can't run and move the camera with the right stick without doing finger yoga. And the best part? Dash is mapped to the same button, so every time I just want to sprint, my character does this random dash first. Who even tested this?

Im at work but at home so ran this a bit for 30 minutes to see how in runs and outside the new area stutters which are in all games, the game runs fine and looks pretty damn good, I mean not better nor worse than Wukong anyway and it also runs similarly to it maxed out, frame gen on dlss at around 60-70% on a 4070ti, 1440p, getting around 120 fps.

It's not perfect, but not somehting you'd massively review bomb. Chinese players are really retarded but then again they overrated Wukong to death, as if it was the second coming of Jesus when it was just mid.

I just killed 3 bosses on the Series S.

The perfomance mode is solid with no frame drops, the graphics are atrocious and reminds me of Dark Souls on PS3.

The art style reminds me of Kuon mixed with Wo Long.

The combat is weird, sometimes feels nice, others feels awkward. Dodging is good, but when you take damage the character barely reacts to it, so dying feels unfair.

The weapons mechanics are cool, you have 4 unique moves with each weapon.

The level design seems ok, the bonfires are a little too far in between.

I was thinking about buying on ps5, since on series s it looks terrible, but I think I will keep playing on gamepass and I might buy it during a sale on ps5.

So far 7 out of 10 for me.

But did you enjoy playing more as a Monke or a sexy lady? I'm not judging.

So far I've beaten 2 bosses and done a full exploration of the surrounding areas. Didn't die vs. either boss but for some fucking reason those little crawling enemies inside of the pots that spit poison at you fucking ruin me. It seems like instead of dodge baiting and delayed attacks like FROM does, Wuchang devs decided to do backstep input reading on their enemies. I don't know if they thought it was more realistic or what, but holy shit when it comes time to counterattack, the enemies are like "PEW ========3 I'm gone bitch" and suddenly they're 50 feet away.

Anyways, I'm enjoying the game a lot so far. I heard complaints that there were too many traps, but I always do my first playthrough of soulslikes slow/cautious and examining the area, so it hasn't been a problem at all for me, yet.

I'm currently running 1h Sword and Spear. I love the Spear's moveset but it comes out way too slow and doesn't even stagger medium sized human enemies, so you end up eating shit every time you do more than a poke. I'm not sure what the purpose of full combos are if you can't ever safely use them. I also can't get the "Obliterate" attacks to work. I've gotten enemies to kneel down and got the prompt, but every time I hit light attack, she just does a normal attack and they get back up. I've tried from the back and the front, neither seem to work. Or am I just expecting the wrong thing? I was figuring they'd do a mini-cutscene attack like Souls' parry or backstab, does that not happen?

I agree with you, the fact that this game is getting review bombed makes no sense. The game is good and works well.

I think Steam users have become very toxic in the last couple of years. They either worship a game or they just hate on it without mercy. It's pretty weird and creepy

Oh no steam reviews, the game is too hard for you, lol? I think someone has been spoiled by difficulty settings in lies of p and khazan.
Kristen Bell Awww GIF

Leave this to me. I got this. No windows or performance issues on PS5 Pro. Maybe I'll capture some bosses and stream them so steam players can find out how the game ends.
Happy Batman GIF

Played a couple of hours. Game is great. Looks good, runs well, level design so far is really good and the combat is chunky. I like the fact that you cant spam dodge to get out of situtations. Combat has weight to it

I like this much better than wukong. Combat just better here

This is the performance apparently,if true it's fucking bad.Surely this is bullshit

Is this game use HW RT or just lumen (software RT)? DSOG tested the game with the settings maxed out (including the native resolution) and UE5 games are usualy very scalable. For example, Black Myth: Wukong was unplayable on my PC at maximum settings and native resolution. However, with a few tweaks, I was able to achieve a decent frame rate.

I completely disagree with everything stated here on it feeling like BMW and this is completely false advertising.

BMW has 0 challenge, is extremely repetitive, and focused on spells.

I agree that this is unique from other souls games similar to lies of P. It's got the key comments here on how levels should flow, challenging bosses, etc.

What's really unique here is the skill tree is large and more out of an ARPG like a path of exile or Diablo to create a unique build and encourages changing and respeccing.

Armor has a lot of stats and elements that it isn't just a focus on higher slash or stab defense but consider all of its elements or else you'll be dealing with afflictions. It's again more like an ARPG like path of exile to focus on resistances more than just armor.

Then you've got the unique systems like madness which as it rises you lose more and more souls on death, but you do more damage/take more damage, and if you die once you hit max madness your souls are held by a dopple ganger hardcore clone. It's a very cool system.

Plus you have things like how you can equip runes to weapons to tweak them further, how spells work, items for elemental infusion for weapons, and I even got a spear that turns into a chain flail so it calls to Bloodborne with unique weapons even within its own pool of weapons.

The game is definitely a breath of fresh air. It's what a game like lords of fallen wanted to be but instead had an annoying lantern mechanic, sluggish shit combat, etc.

This game NAILs it, and if you're going in expecting an action mindless game like black myth you're going to be pissed and refunding. This game is brutal hard in the first 3 hours lol…

I ended up buying it anyway. Played a few hours this morning. 5950x,64GB,3090, gen 4 nvme@3840*1600.

Got everything on the max except shadows (dropped that one level). Latest driver, latest DLSS dll. Balanced mode, 105 fov. Seems to be 60 FPS most of the time (according to the snew steam overlay) occasionally dropping to 55 on a big vista scene. It does the usual stutter on new area stream. But nowt too egregious.

I'm ok with the performance so far at least. I'll drop the GI and foliage if it gets more demanding later

Played up to the 1st boss, game is legit. But man, is it just me or is balance mode on the base PS5 pretty iffy? Performance mode is much better and I couldn't tell a difference graphically between them.
