Xbox community criticizes DF's bias (in Thumbnails) towards the new Xbox console in their coverage

Never?
Never realized how much Cerny looks like Dana Carvey until now. Cursed phenotype.

They were used to DF shilling for Microsoft since the One S and One X launch in 2016/2017, that's why they cry now

But even DF knows that Xbox is dead now, so they are jumping off the Titanic just in time

The entire discussion began after viewers compared two of DF's latest videos. One of them titled "DF Direct Weekly #235: Microsoft Re-Confirms Next-Gen Xbox, Red Dead 2 Remaster Heavily Rumoured" and another called "Sony/AMD Project Amethyst Update – Next-Gen Tech Revealed + Mark Cerny Q&A."

In the thumbnail of the former, DF team members appear serious or even disappointed, and in the thumbnail of the latter, they're smiling. That alone was enough to spark the entire discussion, accusing the outlet of bias.

Twitter user @JBishie argued that the expressions were "deliberately selected to evoke a negative response," suggesting that DF paused frames to make Xbox coverage look gloomy. Others, like @Emmanuel, agree and note how the PS5 Pro leak video was full of laughter and excitement, while discussions about Xbox were "gloomy" and lacking enthusiasm.

One theory that we think is interesting comes from user @Upperthighs, who says that "Xbox negativity brings in views, PlayStation positivity brings in views." The user basically implies that engagement tactics may play a role. But other users also argue that DF's tone reflects the reality of Xbox's current struggles.

"No one likes Microsoft's strategy right now," said one user. And we can't really argue with that.

Their Reputation is Now Under the Microscope

Part of why this debate has exploded now is DF's recent shift to full independence. In August 2025, founder Richard Leadbetter announced that he had bought back the outlet from IGN and its parent company Ziff Davis. "We answer to nobody but you, the audience," Leadbetter said to The Verge at the time, emphasizing transparency and editorial freedom.

As we said at the start, Digital Foundry is one of the most respected names in hardware analysis. They are known for their deep dives into console architecture and game performance. With nearly 1.5 million YouTube subscribers and a loyal Patreon base, the outlet's influence in shaping technical discourse is unmatched.

While the team hasn't publicly addressed the new thumbnail and bias controversy, the situation highlights how tone, visuals, and context can be perceived differently. Especially in an environment that's driven by fandom. This probably doesn't take away from any of the outlet's analysis on games, but their reputation still takes a hit.

When normie gamers start noticing that DF might be a BIT favorable to Xbox.

Sony chill DF

DF have been up MS/Xbox's arse since the beginning. Now that their independent and probably not get special privileges from Xbox anymore, they're suddenly more objective and Xtards online feel it's a problem.

When you're used to always getting special treatment, equality feels like discrimination.

No person who is sensible and objective in the gaming space, looking at the absolute shithole that is Xbox's current condition should be positive about their next-gen plans.

You might argue in favour of negativity on the part of Sony for their more recent first party situation, but since the GaaS push seems to be all but dead, there's really very little reason to be negative about PS6.

I don't know what lurks in the heart of DF but they were very gungho on Series X compared to PS5 and seemed almost dismayed that PS5 was running games better.

This article was from last year so we aren't just talking about launch games.

AHA! clear Xbox shill! I knew it!
Well, he didn't see any problem with the Xbox Series' split memory, even though it's directly comparable to the GTX 970 with 3.5GB + 0.5GB. He also didn't see any problems with the Xbox Series S, and everyone knows what happened...

But the PS5's "variable" clock was problematic for him, and he made a video with the 5070XT (RDNA 1) overclocked to 2.2GHz, saying it "doesn't increase performance above 2GHz," completely ignoring that the PS5 was RDNA2 and that the new architecture could have a natural clock increase. After AMD released RDNA2, the card with the lowest clock speed was 2.2Ghz (PS5) going up to 2.8Ghz

(interestingly, this Old Man from DF's guess aligns perfectly with the crap Jason Ronald said about the PS5, about "forced clocking" and "inflating performance to reach TF value")

It turns out that the PS5 is the console that works as intended, with the standard RDNA 2 clock speed. It's the Xbox SX that has a clock cap for use with Azure Server, and the Xbox SS that causes cross-platform issues.

But of course, you'll ignore all that and repeat some "hurrr durrr" to say he's not biased.

But DF just say PS5 can't handle FSR4 but series x can?
If this is ture Sony shill why they want talk the disadvantage of the product they were shilling? Dat doesn't make any sense😂

They look like snapshots of convicted pedophiles in their thumbnails regardless of covering a PS5 related video or Xbox

They bought into MS's entire PR and fell perfectly for the Xbox manipulation...

Alex Bugaga thought he was so smart for "realizing" that MS's emphasis on "sustainable performance (Xbox Serie)" meant the PS5 had "unsustainable performance."

This is a perfect example of manipulation. You make it seem like the idea of "unsustainable PS5 performance" came from Alex Bugaga himself "realizing" it... thinking it was his idea, that he was "smart enough to realize" what was implied.

And finally, Alex Bugaga and Rich "believed" MS's entire PR because that's what they wanted to believe.

Imagine writing an ad hominem sentence to respond to a bunch of arguments and thinking you're "superior" because of it.

well, your schizo post already disqualifies itself by comparing the memory setup of the Series X with the 970's memory.
if you don't know why that is a stupid comparison, you're not worth a serious response.

Maybe they are as disenchanted with Xbox as most are?
Perhaps they like what Cerny is putting out?

I dont care for them. But i mean- the thumbnails are for clicks.

And he doubled down on the ad hominem to delude himself that he's the winner.

So dumb he doesn't know he's dumb.
Go read to stop being so dumb and ignorant that you think you're cultured and intelligent.

I'm still waiting for the arguments and the explanation of why it's not the same shit between the 970 and the Xbox Series

Next XBox will be 3x more powerful than PS6 and DF doesn't give them any credit. 100% Sony fanboys.

it's an automatic forfeit if you compare a graphics card's VRAM setup to an SoC's system and graphics memory pool.

there is no argument to be had. your post is pure fanboy nonsense

Since you're stupid and think you're smart, I'll write to other people.

When there's simultaneous access to the slow and fast memory pool, memory bandwidth drops significantly.

It doesn't matter if it's the CPU, GPU, or CPU + GPU accessing it.

You're so stupid that you used an argument that reinforces what I already knew:

Besides the GPU being crippled by shared memory, it also has to share it with the CPU... In other words, your "argument" made the Xbox's situation worse.

You're truly stupid. I've never seen anyone as stupid as you.

I never expected intelligence from some idiot who only spews ad hominems.

🤣 this fucking schizo man.

yes, the overall bandwidth per second is lower than the peak possible bandwidth of the fast memory. that is still not even remotely comparable to what the 970 did, as that card inevitably ran into compatibility issues where part of the memory was simply not detected at all by the game, making it effectively a 3.5GB card. and on top of that, the memory speed difference was insane. it was a fraction of the speed of the rest of the VRAM, while on Series X, all it really does is push down the average GB/s by maybe ~20% at most, if even that.

the VRAM setup of the 970 meanwhile, when it was actually detected correctly by the game, could completely crash the speeds and introduce massive stutters whenever the slower memory was accessed.

now, stop schizo posting

I just can't fathom how you can be this pathetic and cry over something like this. It actually boggles my mind. You can't have much going on in your life if you're getting upset over YouTube thumbnails.

When they were shilling for Xbox at every opportunity, the fanboys from that side were showering them with praise, and bashing on PlayStation.

Now that the shoe is on the other foot, and following the recent stack of stupid decisions the Xbox division has taken, they're bashing on digital foundry, because their rival is finally getting some praise. My God the double standards with those guys are bordering on delusion territory.

Back then Xbox was rightfully getting praised over features such as Smart Delivery, Quick Resume and BC enhancements with Gen9 aware plus the very pro consumer nature of GamePass with its accessible price. Now they're getting rightfully bashed for raising the price of their consoles without anything done to them to justify those increases, plus the 50% price increase to GP Ultimate without any incentives shown to justify it. Play stupid games, win stupid prices, get what you deserve.

P.S. Xbox has been given many opportunities, with the recent wave of dumb decisions, that trust has been shuttered leading to people not taking them seriously anymore.

P.S.S. And digital Foundry is right to show some skepticism of their own.
