Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

So I am launching Lost Odyssey today (am on Disc 4, 62 hours in, LVL 60) and the game got an update?!? 640 MB.

Wonder what was updated? The whole BC engine or what?

Same thing with Blue Dragon. I had a problem installing it the first time, and a day later the game asked me to install 500 MB more or less extra.
Didn't notice any difference, although I'm still very early.

Expect nothing and still be disappointed.

I swear there better be something good going down at E3 BC wise

There's no way we aren't getting Crackdown 1 + 2 at the very least.

Personally I was hoping for a Crackdown Anniversary Edition since it's at 10 years now, but I'll take BC as well.
But with the rumors going around, and that mix up recently....

Maybe we can expect Splinter Cell as well.

So I went back to this time last year in the thread. We actually got releases before E3, but nothing spectacular. See above from ekim and my original reaction.

Doubt they would have released anything the weeks before E3.

So using the recently added list here, we've had the following releases before E3:

Weeks leading up to E3 - 2017: 15

- May 23, 2017: 5 titles added
- May 18, 2017: 3 titles added
- May 4, 2017: 5 titles added
- May 2, 2017: 2 titles added

Weeks leading up to E3 - 2016: 29

- June 9, 2016: 4 titles added
- June 7, 2016: 3 titles added
- May 26, 2016: 1 title added
- May 24, 2016: 6 titles added
- May 17, 2016: 1 title added
- May 10, 2016: 5 titles added
- May 5, 2016: 5 titles added
- May 4, 2016: 2 titles added
- May 3, 2016: 2 titles added

I expect nothing during E3 unless its an announcement coupled with the announcement of a new game such as announcing Crackdown 1-2 with Crackdown 3. I think expecting anything beyond that type of scenario you are setting yourself up for disappointment

there has only been one day of BC releases in the last month. Since 5/4. what is going on?

They added 15 games in May, it's not like they've quit putting out BC games. E3 probably affects everything MS is doing. Not a big deal guys..haha. They've spent the last couple weeks prepping for one of the biggest gaming conferences on this here planet.

Agreed. They also have big new hardware they are rolling out. Who knows if some of the bc testing team was pulled to assist with Scorpio testing or emulator regression testing. The titles that are currently in the pipeline may have some unique challenges. Plenty of things could be happening, but I do not yet question their loyalty to deliver more backwards compatible titles.

let's not pretend the BC coding team is in charge of setting up E3.

What if they announce that the BC program is finished and they congratulate themselves on all the games they put on so far?

Pretty sure they don't go through the process of getting with developers to approve games either though.

I'm sure that goes through some kind of hierarchy ;)

it's not like they do all the work and then ask to approve it. I'm sure they get approval and then work till it's ready. I assume this is just to not draw any attention away from E3 on twitter.

Still several titles I hold out hope for; Culdcept Saga chief among them. I hope this slowdown isn't indicative of the end of the program...

While that would somewhat make sense, MS might also work on games they can't release (but were given permission to mess with) to just improve the emulator overall.

Who knows though, would love to get more insight haha.

My wild uninformed guess: The slow down is making sure the BC catalog already released will run perfectly on Scorpio. If its releasing this year, they are just getting final boards in to test.

Still Need:

- Vanquish
- Lollipop Chainsaw
- Far Cry 4 (They did 3, and I got this for $5)
- MUA 1 & 2 (I'm not re-buying these)
- Infinite Undiscovery
- Ninja Gaiden 2
- Dante's inferno
- Crysis Series
- Fear Series
- Dust an Elysian Tail
- Final Fantasy XIII Series
- Duke Nukem Forever (Just to see if they can fix the horrible performance)

Let's hope for something on Sunday.

"So say we, the 1%"

Far cry 4 highly unlikely since there is an Xbox one version already. Although Far cry 2 might be possible.

Marvel ultimate alliance 1&2 highly unlikely as well because activision..

Everything else I agree. Especially ninja gaiden 2. Team NG II

Edit: you edited while I posted, I disagree with duke nukem. Your on your own there buddy.

Problem is during E3 week there are normally also no games ..

Unless they accounce something at the conference (And I doubt it), we will have 3 weeks in a row without any new games.

What if they announce that as of E3 if you own the disc the game will work for every single 360 title and they will continue to add more digitally over time?

That's not at all how backwards compatibility works...

The only new 360 backwards compatibility announcements on stage I would expect is <Xbox 360 game> comes as a preorder bonus for <new Xbox One game in series>. So that's going to be Crackdown 1 & 2 with Crackdown 3... and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection & Zone of the Enders HD Collection with Metal Gear Survive, right? Right!?!

He's asking what if they make it work like that?

That'd be amazing.

I felt like that's how they cold have gone with it, anyway. Just have a general emulator (maybe even pay for it? I wouldn't mind) that does a dump of the disc to a container on the system and is done as a caveat emptor thing. A game may work, it may not work, it may work partially or completely but with some performance challenges based on unknowns.

This would also allow them to have data to fix games more quickly for "real" downloadable versions that fix it and act like the normal version of the game instead of dumping it again.

I feel like this would be a good way for me to replay Bullet Witch, the importable CAVE games, Operation Darkness, etc.

So, I don't see it being talked about much but I just feel (hope) very strongly that OG Xbox support is going to be announced at E3.

I've heard the obstacles but I feel MS has overcame them.

Two more days.

It would be cool bust out my old OXB discs. I'd love to play Deus Ex Invisible War again.

Even if I have to rebuy my games I want this to happen. There could be a big forum pissing contest about exclusives and Phil Spencer going on for days after the conference for all I care, I will be happier than a pig in shit if I can play those never ported OG Xbox games at 1080p or higher.

It would be awesome to play original Xbox games on the one, however I've read a couple rumours/issues with this... Not sure if true.

- Original Xbox games are partially licenced to Nvidia when using BC on 360 and needed an expensive 360 hard drive to work. (Doesn't explain Microsoft enabling 3rd party external hard drives later though)
- Original Xbox games have no licencing info on the disk and cannot be used as a key/check when downloading the game. (if BC works as the 360 games do)

I would love to boot up KOTOR, Freedom Fighters, Metal Arms and Kingdom Under Fire on the One. It would make me buy the $10 digital versions of Ninja Gaiden Black and Burnout 3 instantly.

Or they do re-masters.... My gut feeling is that they are going to do... nothing.....

third party drives work on 360 but they don't let you play OXbox games.

also there isn't any individual licensing information on a 360 disc, either. It's pretty clear they just do a hash of the DVD and make sure it the disc matches what it should be. In theory someone could clone a 360 disc physically and it'd work on the One, but then you have enough money to buy the game anyway..

I don't know if this is a problem that was ever addressed:

I and, after googling, a LOT of other players are unable to play backwards compatible games on Xbox Live with a WiFi connection on the X1. Has this issue ever been solved? Has Microsoft ever been called out for this?

If you have Two-Factor Authentication on your MS account, you need to log into BC games that have Live functions with a generated App Password (and not your MS account PW). It's not that, is it?

My kids Xbox has only ever been connected via WiFi and they've never had an issue with BC games.

Strange, I play via wifi without issue.

Your post is the first time I've ever seen it mentioned

Original Xbox BC would be amazing and I've been very vocal about seeing it or other similar ideas announced at E3.

However with Code Mystics specifically asking which OG Xbox game we wanted to see next from them, I don't think its gonna work out like how it works for 360 BC. Specific titles will probably be getting the Phantom Dust HD treatment.

That said, they didn't specify that PD was the last game they worked on ;)
