Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

Can we stay on topic and not bring "console wars" into the BC thread please?

I'd rather this thread be bumped for someone announcing a game like Dark Souls is now downloadable rather than dudes arguing over console power.

Join the club.

I'm desperately praying they release it this weekend. The only thing giving me hope is the fact they they finally shipped the codes for pre-orders. Logically, it wouldn't make much sense to give you the code for a game that won't be ready anytime soon.

.... Then again, common sense doesn't always apply in these situations.

The wait for this has been agonizing to me. I just want to play my copy of Dark Souls. 😩

Does anybody knows whats up with Perfect Dark? I started it up and it keeps telling me it needs to sign into Live for some reason and it fails to connect every time. Every other BC game I own works just fine and signs into Live without a problem. Its just Perfect Dark acting up. Anybody else experiencing this or is it just me?

The PS3 is a whole different beast and Sony don't have virtualisation experience. Even if it was MS trying to run the PS3 on a PS4, I'd be very shocked if they managed to pull it off.

It's not apples to apples and it's not just raw power.
A decent analogy regarding emulation is that you have two people speaking to eachother in a different language but in order to communicate thy have to use a book and translate.

Lol, the only thing I've been thinking when I saw this bumped was "please be Dark Souls, please be Dark Souls"

I wish the media would hold them accountable for this kind of thing. Halo: MCC and BC were two of the things they were doing to try and turn around their image. So far they have screwed up both royally. I'm happy with some BC games, but after Halo MCC, they owe us a great playing Reach. Instead, they rushed it out the door in an unplayable state, just so they could have another bullet point.

What would you like them to do? They didn't announce a "turn this ship around" plan, they announced a game collection and then Backward Compatibility, over a year apart. The first one had missteps that were very clearly documented by the media, the second one has some bumps that have also been documented (and is a free bonus).

Do you want a scathing expose or every Xbox-related article to start with "Note: The Master Chief collection had launch issues and Halo: Reach runs at a lower FPS through backward compatibility" or something? Just because you're obsessed with something doesn't make it a national issue, I've played plenty of MCC just fine since the patches and I have spent plenty of great time with BC games. As of right now, both are good wins.

How about just one article from IGN, Gamespot, Polygon, Eurogamer, etc. on how poorly they're treating fans of their biggest exclusive franchise.

I've seen how Driveclub and Battlefield 4 devs worked really hard to make up for their launch woes. For MCC, the moment they got it in a functional state, they dropped the project. No promised fileshare, plenty of frame drops (even in MP on later titles), a clunky menu, etc. I mean, they can't even get the menus and the 343 logo not to stutter! Can anyone argue that this isn't sloppy and a slap in the face to Halo fans, especially after we waited so long for fixes?

Then they release Reach that runs at 15-20 FPS in MP and I don't hear a thing about it except from Digital Foundry.

I know they won't, but I'd love it if they brought up these things at every interview. It would make shitty, no-good companies like MS think twice about leaving a product broken.

And Reach being released in this state shows they only care about advertising their BC list for more console sales, not for our benefit.

I'm pretty disappointed in the frequency that games are getting added to the program. The change to games being released as they're ready has resulted in us getting fewer games each month than we did in the single monthly updates.

Yup thats how i feel too. And they are not even giving us any timeframes or status updates anymore on game XY.
We can only rely on leaks :/

Yeah, things have gotten pretty bad. BC was pretty exciting for a while, but lately it feels like MS is moving away from it.

Why can't ps4 not emulate ps3, it's even 50% more powerful than the xbone?

The PS3 is a single PowerPC chip and 6 floating points processors (one is disabled to improve yield and one is used by the OS). I would be surprised if the PS4 can emulate those 6 SPEs in real-time.

The 360 you can at least give a One core to each emulated core, and you have leftovers to use after that. Microsoft also is helping the One out immensely with what appears to be a pre-bake strategy where they preconvert a lot of instructions to X86.

PS4 doesn't even have enough cores to map 1:1 to the PS3 in emulation and have any left over to help the emulator along. It's not a direct comparison between the two hardwares - the PS3 was a CPU beast.

People who still believe this 50% power difference bullshit really have not been paying any attention to the games being released in the past year....in most cases they are basically identical and if they are not the differences you would not be able to tell unless it was pointed out.........have a coke...sit down and enjoy gaming for the games instead of stroking yourself over the system specs.

Also...not sure if you have read the entire thread but the ps3 was a completely different architecture to the ps4 and would be an absolute nightmare to emulate......not saying it cant be done but theirs a fair chance the hardware that will be able to run it will only be a PC.....will be a good day when they do however as im hanging onto my discs

Each of the Xbox 360 cores can execute 2 threads in hardware. You would need 6 jaguar cores to give 1:1 thread execution. Depending on the game you may get back some. Thankfully, modern hypervisor virtualization allows virtual threads. So it doesn't matter one way or the other as long as the emulation execution is fast enough.

This is the biggest reason why Intel i7 Hyperthreading is faster than and fx true threading. I7 does more per clock it depletes the threading execution queue faster than AMD can push the work through 8 spigots. Most of the time atleast, for gaming this is generally the rule.

I always suspected it would be something that was half-assed. It was always seen as bulletpoint to separate itself from the PS4. Nothing more.
Think about it. Does this feature bring in more money for the console or does it drain it? I suspect it's the latter.

Seriously. Debating a console's power isn't exactly what this thread was made for.

I know your pain friend. Knowing that I've got a physical copy and code sitting right in front of me, but still can't play it yet are driving me mad. It doesn't help that Dark Souls is the #1 game I've wanted on BC since the second it was announced (Well, that and Dead Rising).

Surely it can't be much longer now?

This will be my final word on the specs because it is indeed off topic. On paper, the PS4 is 50% more powerful from a purely technical standpoint. 1.2TFlops vs. 1.8 TFlops. You can argue night and day but the numbers are what they are, as far as TFLOPS are concerned. The PS4 has 50% more power. That's pure math. You can also say the Xbox One is 33% less powerful than the PS4. Whichever floats your boat. LOL.

As for your comment about not paying attention to games being released. Many are 900p vs. 1080p. That difference exists in many (but not all) games.

Now, here is the part where I will agree with you. I own and love both systems and have played the same game on both systems on many occasions and I do agree that from a practical standpoint the difference is negligible and not noticeable unless you become a pixel counter. And yes, many fantastic and beautiful games have come out on the Xbox One.

TL/DR: mathematically there is a difference. Practically in the real world, not much.

So what you're saying is nowhere?

The end. No more comments about it.

I just want Dark Souls!

Everytime i see this bumed i get excited for a crackdown announcement needless to say im still disappointed

Every time I see this thread bumped I get hopeful for any new BC game announcement momentum uptick. That's not something that's been happening.

It doesn't help that the confirmed games "coming soon" are uninteresting to me as BC titles outside of Halo Wars, since that game is exclusive to 360 and it being playable on the Xbox One would add its first additional way to play it. Crackdown would indeed be a meaningful addition to BC. So is the popular request, Red Dead Redemption. But, it's like, this great BC initiative comes along that could preserve the 360/gen 7 console-exclusive experiences that would fade with the 360/gen 7 consoles, and people make noise for these blockbuster multi-platform games that are probably available on PC (with low spec requirements and prices nowadays) and are likely candidates for remasters. We already have several options when it comes to playing games like CoD and BioShock. I can appreciate making a copy of a game we already own forward playable, but it's a bit of a wasted opportunity in my eyes if resources for bringing over games are limited. Give me 360 exclusives like Dead Rising, Beautiful Katamari, Every Extend Extra Extreme and Infinite Undiscovery. Hopefully Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey are just a matter of time. Give me gen 7 console exclusives like Catherine, Vanquish, Shadows of the Damned and Nier.

I know I'm a broken record, but I don't see many people who still talk about BC sharing similar opinions and that's frustrating. I'm concerned that this BC initiative isn't going to accommodate my wishes, because they're niche.

As much as I'd like to play a lot of my 360 backlog and favorites with the features of the One, I've just started playing my 360 again.

i downloaded rdr as soon as it was announced it worked.....then they took it away from me and it sits itching at me on the menu :(

Yesterday I bought the Battle for Forli AC2 DLC wich I missed because at the time I was afraid of DLC, eventually I bought the bonfire of vanities because it unlocked a part of Florence but I skipped battle for Forli.
The performance was nice, I notice about six slowdowns in my around three hours of play. I don't remember pop up to be noticeable in the game (especially in piazza San Marco), I'm not sure if it a BC issue. Also it is evident how this games have aged. I remember being blown away by it but textures are muddy like N64, there is no facial capture and many cutscenes hide characters faces. Also, animations has improved a whole lot. I'm not surprised that development costs sky rocketed. Ezio's climbing animations and contextual awareness are god tier, thought, the later even better than current ACs. I miss so much climbing being a puzzle like activity.

Assassins Creed 2 will always be the series high point. Its pretty incredible what they accomplished with that game and how amazing the series was before it became bloated.

Yeah, it is taunting me sitting there in my list of games. What I did play, which was about a few hours it ran really good, so hopefully it won't be too much longer.

Have you noticed that in the latest AC, they barely even climb (ignoring the grappling hook for a moment)? They just hop up from one ledge to another. I miss the old climbing "puzzles" too and agree that AC2 (and Brotherhood for me) was the high point of the series.

I got Alan Wake's American Nightmare today via message as part of the Quantum Break pre order bonus, does anyone know when we'll get the rest of the game (Alan Wake) .. strange that they've given the addon so early.

So does anyone else think they're holding off on Red Dead Redemption BC for some type of E3 tie-in/announcement?

I'm wondering if we don't get a straight up remaster
of it instead of BC?

I mention E3 because I'm thinking Rockstar/Take 2
are finally going to show / announce Red Dead Deliverence or whatever they name the new entry.

American Nightmare is a standalone XBLA game separate from the main game. Alan Wake and its two DLCs will not be given out until 7-10 days after QB releases according to the store discription.

It wasn't an addon, it was an entirely different game that was standalone
