Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

i know its pointless but im hoping some Asian titles get added soon like Wrestle Kingdom and some US titles like Lucha Libre AAA: Héroes del Ring

Why would the licensing be a problem?

Because releasing a new port is essentially the same as releasing a new game. You have to have the correct IP license to release that game (i.e. Battletech). I believe MS no longer has the license to make Battletech based games. While MS Game Studios owns the IP for Crimson Skies, they have already licensed all the electronic entertainment rights to another company, Smith & Tinker. We don't know if it's exclusive, but it probably is.

True BC wouldn't be affected by this since you are playing a copy of the game released while the publisher still had that license. I'm not even 100% sure that the X1 BC solution would be free from these entanglements because when you play a BC game it essentially downloads a new copy from MS encapsulated in an emulation package. You aren't really using your disc for anything except verification. This is why we will probably never see games like Marvel vs Capcom 2 or 3 appear as BC titles.

Well, the preview update decided to come up & kick me off of a GTA:O mission.

it's just like a Windows 10 update after all

E3's almost here! EA/Microsoft better not disappoint with those BC announcements.

Microsoft still owns the licence to make video games based on the Battletech/Mechwarrior/Mechassault universe. The have leased the rights to Piranha for MechWarrior Online. I don't know what the deal with Harebrained Schemes Battletech game is... but I think it's a similar arraingement.

Didn't Spencer say a BC game will be released immediately, once it has gotten publisher approval and gone through the appropriate certification process? As opposed to waiting until the end of each month and releasing a bunch of BC games simultaneously, they will be put up on the store as soon as they are done. So are people really expecting any sort of BC announcements this E3?

He said that but it's not hard to imagine them holding a few up to release them as part of announcement at E3. All of those EA games that are showing up on Amazon, for instance, might be tied to a BC announcement with EA. Especially if you combine that with the news that EA Access is going to be free for 10 days starting at the opening of E3.

because there's some games that can get people hyped.
"Red Dead Redemption is available right now as a BC game! and it's on sale for 70% off digitally!"
*crowd errupts into applause and forgets the dumb $500,000 car that was just lowered into the buidling for the Super Forza Kart Double Dash trailer*

Probably publishers are saying "ok i'll give you the approval for release during/after E3". Not much they can do if that's the case (but I bet that if it's something big as RDR or Skyrim they're happy to annonce them at the conference).

Classic Spencer double speak, "Immediately" really means, we are not going to start certification until we have publisher approval and testing will take as long as is needed for that title depending on how many bugs we find in the virtual machine. Only after that it will be released.

Your statement is passive yet with aggressive undertones... They really need a phrase for that... like NiceyMeanie.

Seriously though I am somewhat disappointed at how long it is taking but at the same time who knows how many technical, legal and financial loop holes they have to jump through.

Who needs new games when you can have OG Xbox emulation on the Xbox One/Scorpio? Would be one heck of a megaton announcement. Hell, I'm more excited for the possibility of this than most games that are going to get new trailers or even unannounced games. What's wrong with me?

It'd be pretty cool. All Xbox generations so far on one console.

And if they do it like the 360 emulation then original Xbox titles will have screenshots, clips etc instead of heading off into offline land like when you launch them on the 360. And you'd assume ALL of them would get a native 1080p upgrade.

More research has shown me you are correct. In fact, Smith & Tinker are now defunct and Harebrained schemes seems to have a license for both Battletech and Crimson Skies. It would appear Piranha has a license too but specifically for Mechwarrior, which is considered a different property for the sake of licensing. The question is if these agreements have any non-compete language in them. Doesn't make sense to pay big money to license an IP for a game and then have the owner put out a similar game that could compete with you.

My point was that dealing with these properties is complicated by the licensing situation. Only Microsoft and their lawyers know for sure if they are legally clear to release a game in either franchise. It would be great if they did, but I find it unlikely we will see one.

Do Xbox One's even read OG Xbox discs?

Waiting for Mass Effect 2/3 : Day 321354321.

Did they read 360 discs prior to BC?

I wonder, would it trigger the bluray/DVD player app where it would show the "This is an Xbox disc, stupid". I always thought that was a nice touch that OR and 360 discs did when you put them in a standard DVD player.

I tried years ago, it never got to the DVD/BR Player to read the video track, I think it recognized it was a game disc, but nothing happened as if there was no disc.

Looks like my Battleblock Theater and Bejeweled 3 backward comptibility titles just downloaded updates. Never had any problem or issues its them.

Interesting. Maybe the update improves load times slightly or a very rare glitch/emulation issue when playing those games?

Did anyone ever figure out what the 400 mb update for Dark Souls was?

Okay I *think* OP should be updated with all the games now. Might be missing a few though.

Same.

Also added all the Amazon Leaks.

NFS Hot Pursuit is confirmed...has the "Plays on Xbox One" banner and all. Rest are rumored, but like, why make cards now just cause? :P

Finally found a copy of Halo Reach on the cheap. I was really hoping MCC would get it as a downloadable like ODST but I think that's probably not going to happen now with 5 out.

I'm still finishing up all the loose ends on Doom and then I'll get into this. Maybe co-op with one of the boys.

Dead Space randomly disappeared from my Ready to Install list. I bought it a year or so back, it wasn't the Games with Gold version. When I check the Xbox Store it says to pay for it, but then on the Xbox website it says it's purchased. Could it have something to do with EA Access?
