Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

Thanks. Kind of a bummer you have to download that every time.

What you are really downloading is an encapsulated virtual machine image that contains both the game and the X360 OS, tweaked for best performance. The actual emulator part probably isn't 500MB, but each image has to contain a copy of the 360 firmware, support files, etc. so that accounts for much of the extra space. For every BC game on your X1, you have a separate copy of all that 360 stuff. Seems wasteful but it's probably the best solution given the circumstances.

Man, they'll write books about these genius engineers. Such outside of the box thinking, emulating the OS instead of the hardware.

It does both, like all emulators have to. The OS was just very simple before 360/PS3/Wii. It basically running a virtual machine like you can do on any PC to say run a Mac or something.

Oh true ignore me then, it's not actually unprecedented. Well it sort of is for gaming I suppose, but I am not very informed on that topic either so it might not be. I wonder why Sony isn't trying to emulate the PS3 OS as well.

OG Xbox emulation on 360 did something similar as well, I believe, though it actually *did* have a single emulator install, rather than each game being wrapped in its own.

As for PS3 on PS4 - the standard PS4 isn't powerful enough to emulate the PS3's Cell processor at full speed and frankly, Sony just doesn't seem all that interested in it anyway. They're all in on streaming.

With Scorpio as strong as it it, could it be full BC, no need for a wrapper and re-license games? It could play the games straight from DVD with no need to install? It could literally play every 360 game?

No it will most likely function the same way as it is now. Performance should be better though.

Scorpio would always require a wrapper due to being AMD cpu based vs power PC

No. But games will run a lot better.

I'm having an issue trying with my Red Dead saves. I checked them and they all say "In Sync", but the game doesn't recognize any. Anybody had this issue?

Lost Odyssey.

Hurry the fuck up MS. I finally own this, and an Xbox One, and I've never played it.

I will say some of the games they add to the BC list at times... Why? Garbage tier nonsense.

What you consider garbage someone else might like. They should keep adding as much as possible to appeal to as many as possible. Most of my personal wanted titles are nowhere near the most requested and if all we got were the popular AAA games I wouldn't care about the service at all.

Different strokes and all that.

I get that, but there is times I look at the new additions and think... that was a title released on the 360?

It's not really up to MS which titles go BC. They're doing all the work yes, but if XYZ publisher asks MS to make poop simulator BC, MS can't exactly turn around and say "nope your game isn't good enough for BC program"

Today's additions:

NIN2-JUMP
NEW RALLY-X
Mr. DRILLER Online

Hmm, I wish some of the titles they announced a while ago would drop already. Such as LEGO Star Wars 3. There are a bunch of others too that could easily make this thread devolve back into list posting like it was a few weeks ago :)

That being said, more games is always good even if I personally don't care about them.

Somebody needs to tweet this to Sega. Everytime this thread pops up and no VF, brings only disappointment. BRB, gotta pour one out for my man Jeff...

This just makes me want to put one of my region free Cave games in to see if it will ever work.

TBH, It's unfortunate there's not an emulator "build" you could down for unreleased games to put the disc in, have it wrap the ISO and then see if it runs. It could be in a beta state eternally for unreleased games and could help get the userbase to test out changes faster. When a new build releases it just needs to rebuild that part of the emulator.

I just finished playing Saint's Row 4 through BC, and had a lot of fun. The game crashed a couple of times during the 30h of gameplay, but apart from that it ran fine. That's one game off my backlog. :)

My hope is that Bethesda will announce some of its titles for Backward Compatibility at Quakecon this weekend. Would perfectly coincide with this week's Bethesda sale on Xbox Live.

(As a reminder, Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops and Take Two's Red Dead Redemption were each on sale on Xbox Live when they were released for Backward Compatibility.)

Excited to play Mr. Driller Online again! Apparently, I bought Nin2-Jump at one point as well as it was waiting in my "Ready to Install" list. I have an achievement for it for clearing World 1. I don't remember this game at all.

Backwards Compatibility is going to be so good on Scorpio.

Yeah, I've been thinking about that.
With considerably better hardware - and a full two years into the Backward Compatibility initiative - Scorpio should be pretty amazing for BC.

I'm thinking just about every BC game running at 30fps, fast loading times, minimal BC glitches, etc.
I only wish all 360 titles could somehow be uncapped; I'd be curious to see if the hardware could push a previously-locked 30fps title near 60fps on Scorpio BC.

Don't go thinking that every game BC will be improved on Scorpio. With emulation, you never know what might break of you let the CPU go emulate even a MHz higher, so I suspect a lot will be locked down to how they ran on 360.

There's always that hilarious Saints Row 2 PC port where they ported the 360 code so closely that if it recognised a CPU clock speed different (either higher or lower) the game would run too fast by orders of magnitude depending on how far away you were.

On fixed hardware, shortcuts can be used. We'll end up seeing which games used them and which ones didn't which will be fun.

Remember that the experience we're getting is curated, though. They're not just going to open the floodgates and say "have fun!" If it doesn't look and feel polished, we're not going to get it.
