Xbox One Launching 9/4 in Japan

You guys realize japenese publishers want this, right?

They want their dev teams to be very familiar with the architecture, so they do not get left too far behind in western markets. The more prevalent the support system is for the Japanese market - the more MS puts boots on the ground there - the easier it is for their devs to get feedback and development resources. If they are launching in the regional market, then MS allocates budget to the region, than pubs can co-lab with MS for marketing support, dev support, co-publishing, etc. It's a big business, and being in that region has as much B2B implications as it does B2C.

To echo someone above, there is always a market.
You just need to know how to find it.

Why anyone wouldn't want this is kind of baffling to me, especially if they want more Japanese support in the West.
Where do you think games like Lost Odyssey, Dead Rising 3, etc, come from?

Problem is, is those games that you listed are exclusive to Xbox consoles. That's what we don't want.

I'm I the only one hoping MS fund some young unknown Studio so we can get some new blood in that market instead of usually studios.

the fella looks almost hesitant, like "I'm not sure I really want this" kind of expression

Why don't we want them? Those games wouldn't have existed unless MS funded their development.

so you rather have the games not come out at all?

It's not that. It's that many people like myself buy Nintendo's & Sony's consoles & handhelds for Japanese 3rd party games.

Games like Tales of Vesperia, for example, we didn't get for PS3 in the U.S., because Microsoft paid off Namco-Bandai to keep it exclusive to the 360 for the west. That's what I meant by what I said.

They don't want to have to shell out $500 w/tax for another console just to play games that they want to play.

No but really, this will be one of the greatest flops in the country of all time.
The 360 managed awful numbers, but it was cheaper, came out earlier, had better quality multiplats and had a bunch of Japanese-focused exclusives.
The Xbox one is more expensive, coming out later, with worse quality multiplats and seems to have no japanese focused exclusives thus far. Not to mention, the Xbox 360 probably had a more appealing design for Japan vs. the Xb1 and 360 launched in a much healthier console market. This will truly be something to see.

they'll be lucky to sell one million lifetime.

I'd be kind of surprised with 500k LTD honestly.

I wouldn't take those publisher/developer lists as a notice that they're actively developing games for Xbox One.

No:

Xbox - 472,992
Xbox 360 - 1,612,391

That's pretty good then. If this trend continues the Xbox One could be sitting at around 5 million there.

lol

Microsoft gave up on 360 in Japan years ago, and likely burned bridges with most of the userbase they cultivated. The platform is now pushing ~200-300 units a week.

whose 'we'?

The majority of consumers would rather have content, then not have content.
And publishers would rather make money, than not make money.

I notice you don't have a gamertag in your profile.

Doesn't seem very level to me...

Did you notice I said either side? Of course you didn't. I even think 'exclusive content' for games is stupid, all that useless crap for games like Watch_Dogs and Assassin's Creed on Playstation platforms is a waste of time.

MS probably doesn't believe its going to sell well, but they have to try just in case.

The Japanese studios that get involved in those deals are asking for trouble.

Total exclusivity is just not beneficial in the long run for third party studios, they miss the opportunity of popularizing their own franchises at a time people are more receptive to new IPs. Restricting your game to Xbox in Japan is a poor strategy.

It's going to be a depressing generation if all of them choose the Xbone over the PS4 just because that's where everyone went last gen. :-/

I figure they have more business sense than to go by that reason alone. I'd assume that if these devs stuck to Xbox One this gen, it would be for similar initial reasons to 360: development was cheaper or maybe MS somehow otherwise incentivized it.

I just want the games to exist. I'm happy to see them on consoles over handhelds/mobile, so which of the consoles doesn't really matter to me.

Probably most level headed people. 3rd party exclusives on either side are annoying as far as I'm concerned.

I don't understand why a game not existing is preferable to a game existing as an exclusive.

This release date tells me that Japan could really care less about FPS. I could be wrong, but I honestly think their local developers know more about continuing franchises that their culture is use to rather than trying to experience something like Titanfall or Call of Duty for the very first time. Sounds totally like our market in its current state, except ours is shooters.

Not if those games weren't going to happen otherwise. Most level headed people aren't angry at Nintendo for Bayonetta 2, and they shouldn't be angry at MS for Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon. Feel free to be annoyed by what happened with Tales of Vesperia, but don't act like every exclusive MS ever sees is equivalent.

Everybody has a choice, it's just lots of people choose to take sides in the first place.

Nope, they're just asking for failure.

3rd party exclusives can be good for games we wouldn't have gotten without it. See Ryse, Fatal Frame,DR3, Bayonetta and maybe TF.

Already commented on that. To clarify I find it annoying when any company pays to specifically keep a game off of another platform.
If the game would not actually exist without the funding provided by Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo, then that's fair enough.

hmm..Cave and Moss..looks like Xbox is gonna be the place to get your shmups again.

Exactly what I was thinking. Does anyone know how the "Every box becomes a devkit" works? If it's own a box and pay a fee to create games for it, what's to stop a smaller team to just create/port smaller/cheaper digital games and release through id@xbox, or whatever it is called, similar to I suppose what Greenlight is doing? (is that what Greenlight is doing?) Of course I'm kinda sleep deprived at the moment so I may be imagining things.

Exactly what I meant earlier.

Not to sound like I'm bashing or anything. But Japan gets... I mean MAKES better action games. I don't see Ryse doing anything different. Again I'm just making a statement I strongly agree upon.

Please read my other post that I made earlier to see what I meant & why I don't want most Japanese games being exclusive to Xbox One:

Link.

Maybe you shouldn't have replied to a post citing "those games listed" when none of them fit the problem you're complaining about?

Hey if Japan don't won't them games I'll take them! MS gave me my fav JRPG last gen.

Same! I think people underestimate Microsoft's ability to see what fans and hardcore gamers want and give it to them. I always thought the original Xbox was really a Dreamcast 2.
