Xbox One Launching 9/4 in Japan

This will be an instant failure. MS is basically wasting their time and money.

Not saying MS will find some form of success there (perhaps they will.. who knows), but just because something will fail does not mean you should give up. Even a failure can be a lesson learned.

The fact they they'll sell x number of units isn't in question. The cost to bring the console to a new market is. They will sink tens of millions of dollars on marketing, logistics etc, which might only net then thousands of consoles sold. This has been the case in some European countries.

As others have said, it's more to keep Japanese publishers and devs on side, than selling successful product to a specific market. I'd imagine that Japan would be a huge loss to MS, as the sales wouldn't make up for the other costs. But I very much doubt that is their goal.
They want to keep the pubs and devs on their side, yes. Westerners will be big supporters of their games, especially since there is no more region locking. Titles from Japan will be more easily obtainable and they reach will widen.

This launch is really just a show of good faith towards Japanese developers that their country isn't being ignored by Microsoft. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft provides the Japanese market with any real amount of software support in the future.

The original Xbox actually had a decent launch in Japan in terms of lineup and numbers... unlike the Xbox One (in a local context).

MS probably doesn't believe its going to sell well, but they have to try just in case.

The Japanese studios that get involved in those deals are asking for trouble.

Total exclusivity is just not beneficial in the long run for third party studios, they miss the opportunity of popularizing their own franchises at a time people are more receptive to new IPs. Restricting your game to Xbox in Japan is a poor strategy.
Except it isn't restricted to Xbox in Japan anymore...there is no region locking on consoles anymore. Games can more easily be obtained if you want to get them instead of importing a Japanese Xbox.

Pretty certain he meant for people in Japan. So not having a PS4 or Wii U version of a game leaves only the tiny amount of Xbox owners as a possible Japanese audience.

lol yea do you fools honestly believe From would make a Souls game an exclusive
far too much money in it to do that

Well, the list doesn't imply exclusivity. I suppose if the port is happening, the game will come out both on PS4 and Xbox One. If it's not happening, then it's probably a new Armored Core game.

This has a 99% chance of failing like the 360 did. Why not reduce that number to 90-80% by rebranding the console to something the Japanese market wouldn't be completely allergic to?

I know this off topic and I can't start threads, but does anyone think MS will make something similar to PS Now. Just something I been thinking about.

Which is why buying Rare instead of Sega was such an amazingly stupid move. Releasing a Sega branded Xbox over there would have stood a much better chance at some success... especially with Sonic, Virtua Fighter, Phantasy Star etc as exclusive IPs.

But noooo... instead let's just buy a corpse.

After seeing the weekly sales of the PS4, Microsoft probably have to keep their expectations especially low for their console.

i wish someone would buy Sega and force them to localize Yakuza 5
preferably Sony
maybe well see something at E3 seeing as it was one of the most requested games to be localized console wise

Can they even do that?

So which system will have the most regional lifetime sales: Vita in North America or Xbox in Japan.

Vita has games i give a shit about and make me want to buy a Vita
plus whats one more handheld on top of my 3DSXL
Xbox one has NOTHING i care about and theres no where to put it

How many sales does the PS4 have in Japan right now? I'm just curious. Honestly I don't think the XBO will do that well in Japan but if we get some amazing games out of it being released there then I'll be happy. Mainly Japanese action titles, please somebody for the love of god I want more of those. Bayonetta 2 and Devil's Third is all I've got right now.

I've been wanting any of the 3 to buy Sega and take them out of the third-party publisher mind-set for years. It's probably too late now though.

Can they even do that?

Sure, why not? If MS owned Sega they could brand it however they liked (preferably call it something other than Xbox too). With Sega still being a big name in the arcade business, it would immediately hold more brand recognition than MS has achieved to this day with the Xbox over there.

Of course, hindsight is 20/20 (although I said this back in 2001 too, lol). I imagine MS predicted that they'd be doing a lot better over there by now. If they had seen the future, they probably would have gone with the Sega purchase.

How are you applicable for both sides of this scenario? Do you live in both the US and Japan?

Vita in US takes this easily though. The Xbox One would need a miracle in Japan to match the Vita's current LTD in the US.

From this week's Media Create Sales Thread:-

Code:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
|System | This Week | Last Week | Last Year | YTD | Last YTD | LTD |
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| PS4 | 13.034 | 13.401 | | 519.773 | | 519.773 |

Yep, it's pretty dire. Imagine the Xbone doing not even 1/9th of those weekly sales.

lol

Microsoft gave up on 360 in Japan years ago, and likely burned bridges with most of the userbase they cultivated. The platform is now pushing ~200-300 units a week.

I agree. Remember when Tales of Vesperia was being announced as a 360 exclusive & that Microsoft got many Japanese gamers to buy the console, because they thought that it would be exclusive to that platform? Well, they got pissed when they discovered that Tales of Vesperia was being ported to PS3 & felt like they wasted their hard-earned money on buying the 360 for it.

I don't think that they'll fall for the same thing twice.
