I don't see it happening. I like the brand, I own a series x, but outside the U.S. it won't gain enough traction

Just logged into Best Buy, no PS5s, no PS5DE, no XSX, buuuuut... XSS has Add to Cart and has it every time I log in for the past month.

Nobody wants it like some have thought they would.

Yeah this is a pretty big miscalculation by Phil Spencer, IMHO.

I really wish the Series S did not exist and they just offered a cheaper XSX without a disc drive like PS5 DE

It's the inferior Xbox. At least with the Xbox 360 arcade you could upgrade to a bigger HDD. Here you're stuck with inferior hardware and a smaller SSD as well as being digital only. The XSX is the better buy as far as Xbox goes even with the $500 price tag.

How can that be considered a win then?

I don't think it is. The new gen for Xbox is off to a relatively poor start. I suspect XSX will come back in stock regularly soon, while PS5 will continue to sell out for a long time.

Phil saw this happening last year, which is one of the reasons why they are going on a buying spree.

Plot twist.

OP headline is going to be right, when a crew of neckbeard lunatics with too much free time on their hands ends up getting MS-DOS running on the console; and we are then able to type in the Win command to get a GUI up and running on it.

we don't know Ms stopped to give hw sales from years they shift to other parameters. Why important if their business is done in a different way?
Didn't they stop giving sales numbers about the time when they started getting stomped with the Xbox One? I would imagine if they had something positive to show, they'd it. Aside from that, more hardware equals more potential sales, which means happier developers.

I mean shit, you have to wait for the PS4 for 6 days on the restock compared to the XSS, which either means they are winding down supply, or people have more of a demand for it over the XSS.

Little kids still like PS4 over the new xbox due to the free2play games with offline games playable without DRM.

you can imagine that and I'm sure lots of people on here like to think the "STOMP" must be the reason. Apple stopped to give sales of iphones and ipad too I'm sure someone "STOMPED" them hard too right?. The truth is that Nadella just likes subscriptions models and if xbox division is today receiving loooots of money is because is investing in gamepass not because microsoft care about hw sales. Luckily for them gamepass is skyrocketing and the xsx is always sold out. Also for sony that likes hw sales ..the ps5 is always sold out. Both VERY happy
The comparation between console hw sales would work if they both had a closed system and used individually sold games as their main entrance. The Xbox abandoned that model joining their Windows platform to the Xbox user reach and even on top of that also xcloud users. They are not anymore primarily interested in selling the single game but that you subscribe and remain a subscriber to gamepass. For this reason they have acquired many studios, to have a continuous stream of games on the pass. Comparing the hw sales when you have such different models is so simplistic that it becomes stupid. Or you have to be biased to do it intentionally, as James Sawyer Ford James Sawyer Ford did before.
As you say it is clear that potential consoles sold increase the reachable user reach and it is precisely to overcome this problem (and also that of the reset of generations) that Microsoft has unified the Windows10, Xbox and xcloud platforms. The possible user reach is for xbox games and gamepass probably already higher now just with the pc users only three months after the release of the consoles than Sony will have with the ps5 100/120 millions at the end of the generation. Sony understands it (or is understanding it) and this is why it is slowly trying to change the model by releasing games on PC too

Try and actually check out and purchase it. It tells me it is not in stock at a local store and it isn't available within 250 miles. I can't order it online to ship either. You don't have to like the XSS but you don't have to create a narrative about it either. Just don't buy one if you don't want one.

It's the Xbox for people who don't want to spend the same as the more advanced graphical device. The SSD size is mitigated by simply using an external drive. Cold storage actually works on the XSS despite its inferiority. More expensive systems lack this basic feature for some odd reason. Maybe it's not as inferior as so many people who never planned on getting one believe.

I see, I didn't add to my cart, but found it odd that it says Add to Cart and has said it all month long. But the other consoles it does not give that option.

Not everything is a conspiracy against your favorite brand. Everything will be okay.

2 hours later, and its still in stock. It let me go to check out. No add to cart shenanigans.

I agree, Phil might have miscalculated. Especially with how fast ppl are snatching up the PS5, PS5DE and XSX.

If you define a "win" as selling more units, then I'd guess that the OP's prediction is off the mark. I don't think the XBS/X will outsell the PS5.

But as long as it sells enough to garner 3rd party support, that's all that matters and it will 100% do that.

Aside from that, I can't play sales on my console. It doesn't affect me or my experience in any way possible. Seeing as crossplay is pretty much standard these days, even the old argument of benefiting from a larger playerbase is irrelevant. With Xbox games releasing on pc, I imagine the Xbox playerbase will often be bigger anyways.

The real question should be, which console will offer the better experience this gen.

It was a foolish move and unforced error if so. Back in the 360 era no one wanted the one that came with no hard drive. Everyone called it the Tard Pack. It's like that movie Jingle All The Way... no one wanted a fucking Booster doll, everyone wanted Turboman! Phil should know that history is against selling an inferior sku against a superior one.

Yes, I too buy videogames consoles for their cold storage ability. I only buy the consoles with the best cold storage functionality.

I considered to picking up an XSS (before the specs were known) but the thing that killed it was the HDD, I think if MS gave it a TB it would have sold better. Adding storage makes it just as expensive as the XSX so it makes so financial sense to pick up an XSS with a 500GB drive.

After hanging out in a stream to get the heads up on consoles, it might just be available somewhere, just not near you.

I just tried to check out, and no its not available today. But will be tomorrow at alot of stores near me. I'm in DC.

No one's creating narratives. Even last week, there were more drops for everything except the Series S. I think even MS knows, and are making the XSX more available. The unicorn PS5 DE was more available last week vs the Series S.

You like to 'dunk' on your least liked brand but I haven't noticed the follow through when wrong. Talk to FrankWza FrankWza if you are looking for a good conspiracy though MS will have their pound of flesh! You are right of course; Sony will be just fine no matter what mean old Phil Spencer and the Xbox discord cabal says or does.

It's true they both will be fine. I have my Xbox, it's just in PC form, and I don't dunk on the XSX, just dunk on the 12 > 10 (or was it 8?) crowd that all of a sudden drops the power mantra when it comes to defending the the anemic XSS (in comparison to the XSX). You know, then power doesn't matter out the other side of the mouth.

Did you actually conitnues on, becuase mine let me add to cart then says non available in nearby areas, so this is completely incorrect... as a matter of fact your screen doesn't have a pick up area either for me to test, so feel free to prive your Zip code, but in the three areas i own homes 23669/15120/33351 there are none

XSS getting a drop tomorrow does not prove the system isn't selling today. In fact it not being in stock now shows the opposite. There certainly is a narrative that somehow the XSS is a failure simply because people who aren't affected by its existence don't like it.

You can also buy a console that lacks the feature entirely if you wish. People on a budget don't mind smaller storage and when that space can be easily and cheaply expanded it becomes a non-issue, well for consoles where the feature at least exists anyway.

People say all sorts of things on the internet. Some people swore that the superior SSD on the PS5 would mean load times half as long as on an Xbox. That isn't brought up so much any more. None of that matters if someone just wants to play video games.

You're right, people with a more casual mindset or those on a budget don't tend to get caught up on things like storage because they tend to only play a handful of games a year. Which begs the question, why did you bring cold storage up at all in that case?

Because someone made a disingenuous post knocking the size of the XSS storage space without mentioning that it is easily mitigated with a feature more expensive consoles lack.

No one has to like the XSS, I didn't buy one for myself, but there is no need to lie about it either. Simply ignore it and move on. If it fails it will fail on its own.

So because someone pointed out a shortcoming of the Series S they are being disingenuous? Believe it or not, the lack of storage is an issue for some people, and no "cold storage" does not solve everything since next gen games cannot be played from an external hard drive. So if you want a next gen Xbox that doesn't have measly internal storage you two options - buy the Series S + the extortionate proprietary drive or simply buy the Series X. Considering the price of the former option it makes the latter a no brainer. With all that in mind, where is the lie? How is the Series X not the better buy (which is what he said)?

When you consider the fact that the Series S is also digital only, it makes the choice to cut it's storage capacity an even more baffling decision. With the smaller drive your options are to purchase the expansion drive or tediously move games between the internal storage and a USB hard drive* (and vice versa).

*also not included with the console.

If it fails it will fail on its own.

Before you go to sleep tonight remind yourself of these wise words and also remind yourself that they also apply to devices that don't start with X.

I think this is going to end up a closer generation with Sony ahead, but next gen is going to be MS all the way if Sony doesnt do something. Alot of Sony fans do not understand that their first party only really registers to them as Sony fans it doesnt seem so dynamic to outsiders, when I look at Sony games, you know what kinda looks interesting to me Deathloop. The thing in Japan seems like an issue to me.

I mean they could "win" if they make ALL BETHESDA games exclusive to Xbox and PC. If not Xbox will be in the same spot as they were in 2013.

It is a shortcoming as you put it that other more expensive consoles have and they have no mitigation AT ALL. So the XSS gets knocked for its small storage and you have multiple options to deal with it and other again more expensive consoles do not have the same options and those are fine. Got it. Yes it was disingenuous.

You might not know this but the XSS is not the only digital only console on the market. All digital consoles should offer cold storage when your internal storage fills up. I heard rumors there was a device on the market with no cold storage AND currently no ability to increase the internal storage either! I bet that would really upset you seeing how the XSS doesn't have either of those problems.

The XSX is a good option for a gamer who wants 4k graphics and higher graphical fidelity. It is more expensive than the XSS so it might not be a the best option for everyone. The good thing about the XSS is it offers the same features as the XSX minus the optical drive and 4k. Two devices for different audiences. Not everything is for everyone. Options are good.

I saw Best Buy selling the Series S for about the past week online but it's for in store pickup only.
When I first checked my area, the nearest store I could pickup from was 30 miles away. Can see who no one wants to buy it online to gamble where the nearest store is to pickup.

Gamestop was selling them online this week and I did order one.

Every site I have looked at shows PS5 outsells XSX in LATAM. Hmm.

Anyways, here is my issue with Xbox: as a long time consumer, they have still not done ANYTHING to target a still big demographic of gamers. I am not talking about the RPG/Japan games players and weaboos, that market is slowly drifting away from Sony to Nintendo.

I am talking the PHYSICAL gamers. Yes, we are a "dying breed" and yet, still thousands and thousands of games are sold for physical, and the demand is still large, large enough for companies like iam8bit and LRG to thrive and more competitors still rising. The Physical is still a big deal, and you can get them CHEAPER at places like walmart day 1.

So, X is shifting to gamepass and games as a service; sorry that does nothing to me. I WANT physical media. X is shifting to playing on PC; why the hell do I need an xbox if I can play it on PC?

I get the marketing, I get the benefits, and eventually the world may be more and more forced there, but their disregard for the physical players really hurts them. TBH if Series S had a physical drive I was considering getting it so I could play all the X titles I missed from not owning one; but with it being tied to XSX, there is no reason for me to care this gen unless it is severely discounted (i.e. S is dead).

TLDR; XBox has a lot of demographics they are ignoring; not just the weebs. We physical players spend LOTS on physical, for instance, I did 5500USD in 2020 alone. (too lazy for grammar srz)

Why would that upset me when I've never once uses cold storage or external USB drives on any of my consoles and have always opted to delete games I don't play and download the games I do want to play? Which, by the way is also an option available to everyone.

You're barking up the wrong tree here, but hey focus on what you need to focus on to make yourself feel better. Yes the Series S will get knocked for it's smaller storage but thank god you're here to constantly remind us of this "cold storage" thing that "the competition doesn't have!!!1!“. Oh what ever will you do once the competition open up solution's for this fabled cold storage? Will you be ok then in admitting the Series S would have been better had it had a larger internal drive?

the competition have other type of problems to solve like selling aa games at 70 euro each one and not having service as gamepass place their 399 console in a lot less interesting position than 299+ let's say another 100 for an entire year of games (350+). Xss will be completely sold out during the Christmas time save this post
