Xbox Series S "Brilliantly Designed Machine"

The Series S is a great little console that comes with the same feature set as the Series X(Zen 2, RDNA 2: RT, VRS 2, VRR), but targeting 1080p instead of 4k. The fast loading, Quick Resume, and slew of 120fps titles speak for themselves. When you get hands-on with the console you realize how compact, quiet, and powerful it is for $300. Like Rich said, the only downside really is the amount of RAM.

The power draw of that thing is so low..~100watts on average? its kind of nutty

40% less power draw than the Series X.

Does it provide 40% less entertainment? Absolutely not.

Not sure why you brought 3060. It is actually comparable to SX and PS5 and outperform them in RT.
I'm actually praising the Series S for how affordable it is and a great entry for anyone who wanted to start gaming . The 3060 is just a comparison on how expensive it is to build a PC with an entry level GPU . So yeah I guess you didn't get what I meant earlier .

This is a false narrative. PC games are normally at the edge of graphical innovations and also need to work with much lower specs. Stop this.
We can agree to disagree :messenger_winking:

As if the Series X is actually going to get cheaper. I bet they do a refresh before they drop the price.
If those sale numbers for PS5 continues it will get cheaper, that's MS's angle ... "make everything cheap to compete and move units". That's why the Series S even exist.
Can't wait to quote your post when the series s drops in price at the same time or even before the x does.
It will be discontinued as soon as Phil figures out a way to make a cheaper Series X. Matter fact, I predict when the "Xbox smart TV App" and "Xbox Chromecast like dongle" comes out the Series S will probably be phased out than.

We have seen this before with the fat Xbox one, Xbox one S, One S disc less edition, etc.

I was literally asking for this exact type of console before it was announced.

I will never buy two $500 boxes when one of them will be used only for a handful of exclusives and 99% of their titles overlap as multiplatform. I already have a $500 PS5 and a $300 Switch. If I was ever going to get an Xbox, it had to be a cheaper supplemental purchase or I would just skip it.

Same.

I have a PS5, Switch and a pretty good PC with RTX 2060 Super. Yet, it's still the most impressive of them all. Incredibly small, very quiet even under heavy load, plays every game just fine, and despite what "critics" and armchair experts say - it is here to stay and will be relevant in the foreseeable future.

It won't be, if x drops to $449, it drops to 249, if x gets to $399, it goes to $229 or $199.

The smart TV dongle /app will co-exist with the x and s.

Your comparison with xbox fat makes no sense, it was thevsame hardware, the xbox one s was end of life, and the discless version was in limbo, but again, not different hardware.

well just because I think it's a pointless console that segregates the market needlessly... is no reason to downright throw sarcasm at my face :p

No worries......it's not really a huge deal, the PC market already forces developers to be very flexible. One more skew on a fixed platform when your already doing 3 versions isn't a big deal, especially since it had modern architecture/cpu.

I really dont get the brilliant part. It looks almost exactly like an xbox one s board, which is just like the phat xbox board, only smaller. It is designed like a pc motherboard. Thats like saying a new mATX board is designed brilliantly when these are as old as fuck, with very little change over the years 🤷

Edit:

And before someone gets their panties in a bunch, the only modern home console that could be said to be "brillinatly" designed is the sex. The ps5? Some part of it, sure. The series s has nothing brilliant about its design imho, and thats not really a minus.

Do you also call the Xbox Series S the "ses"🙄

I think it's a great little console, when the price comes down to £199 or even £149, it will sell gangbusters, atm it's a little too close in price to the PS5 slim for my taste and places like Amazon are charging a bunch more than the RRP as it is, which is unacceptable for a console a third of the power of the SeriesX. But as I said, lovely console, great for a 1080p tv and for the kids, also for poor people like me one day ;) (especially as I find 4K to be entirely overrated).

Cool. I really like the physical design of it too. I wish I had a reason to get one, but I went with Series X because I've invested in a 4k tv.

How is it segregating the market? You know the XSS plays the same games as the XSX don't you? If it had to have its own specifically developed games I could see your point.

It's an amazing system. Getting the second best console version of all next gen Microsoft first party games going forward, and for only $300. What's not to love?

Lol no.

This smells like sponsored content.

Microsoft did not pay DF to say this:

"To be clear, my overall opinion of the console and its performance has not changed - Series S works but there's still the sense that the cutbacks to spec were a little too severe. Specifically, I still think it should have shipped with more memory and a wider interface for more bandwidth."

I'm thinking of the s. Still on 1080p and just want something to play gamepass games since my pc is old now and Has trouble running some games.

Microsoft flight sim runs fine on it and all "next gen" games will do as well. Nothing to worry about. Even ratchet would run fine on it since it doesn't require 7000+MB/s SSD to run properly.
Indeed if you like 1080p as your max resolution.

Is a fun machine no doubt specially with gamepass and the tons of Xbone X games avaliable on it, currently its a better deal than a Series X if you only care about library and not spects.

Exactly and that's what it is for.

There's not much evidence to actually support this. Xbox One X was more expensive than PS4 Pro it's whole life. One S was on par with base PS4 pricing. There were times when it was on sale but Microsoft has no consistent history of cutting prices to try to undercut Sony despite never selling more consoles. Sony is the company that released $100 PS1 and PS2 models. If Microsoft would have done that maybe they would have sold more.

The console that nobody needed

Remember folks: HDMI port is backwards compatible so PS5 works even at 1080p, or 720p (crazy right?) and for $100 more you get a real next-gen console...

Not really when one is more or less readily available and has Game Pass
Yes if you're into affordability then here in the UK the difference is £110 or at least $150. Plus you're not tied to the overpriced official store as Xbox keys are sold by third parties, that can save a huge amount of money.

let's see in 5-7 years.
Devs will have to develop for this lower end hardware
So you're arguing that as time goes on developers will struggle to use hardware they're very familiar with and possesses a mature and robust development environment? I keep seeing this argument and it still makes no sense. First off name a console that as a generation went on developers had MORE trouble making games for. This didn't happen with the PS3. This didn't happen with the X1. Hell this didn't happen with the Sega Saturn. Yet the XSS will be the first console that developers will lose the ability to make games for. Highly dubious. Second every Xbox game hits PC. Do you know how many PCs out there have WORSE specs than the XSS? What about the XSS specifically makes it not be able to run games in 5 years? The X1 still gets games made for it to this very day yet the XSS, a MORE powerful console, won't be able to make it 5 years? Please provide a technical breakdown why that will be the case.

XSS is s hard sell given the PS5 DE.
PS5 DE:
- no ecosystem to support it since PSNow doesn't give PS5 games at all;
- new games cost 27% more than physical (in Western Europe)
- can't resell games after you finish them (and you might since they are mostly SP, linear games)
- can't buy second hand games (and you might, see above)
- the €100 you saved are gone after buying 5 games, then you gonna get the Ryan Ram for the rest of the generation.

If you bought a PS5 DE because you want your cruise ship replica to at least look symmetrical then good for you I respect that. If you bought it because you thought it was a good deal then I don't know what to tell you.

You are not buying used games or reselling games after you finish them for XSS either. And the cost of games depends on what games you want to play. If the games are not on Game Pass or only on PS5 then what? You are not getting those games any cheaper any where else or at all. So no, you are not automatically losing the money you saved with "5 games". Just depends. Value is subjective.
