Aw, they fixed the Repeater/Stock combo. That was one of my favorites, it was just hilarious to watch someone miss horribly and then the target fell down dead anyway.

I'm hesitant to start a new game until I've checked if the mods I've installed works with it. I don't see why UI mods should break anything, but... patch day and mods is always fun.

DLC as of now is so delivering. Really glad with it.

The new weapons might be on the OP side. Having said that, it kind of fixes the problem on legend that the start was too tough compared to the rest. So when the alien ruler shows up (amazing story mission, btw, AMAZING, don't spoil yourself) you are in a good position to fight it and I guess it kind of ends up balancing in the end.

I only found the ruler on his debut story mission, btw, am afraid as fuck of her showing up during a regular mission and it feels great.

Shame! I also loved doing that.
So are stocks or repeaters any good now? They already felt mediocre even with the combo.

I'm reading that Repeaters can one-shot Rulers. I'd say it's worth having someone with a 10-15% Repeater and Rapid Fire around just for that.

That does seem like something that probably shouldn't happen, but... XCOM plays fair enough that "One-hit any enemy means ANY enemy" is not out of the question as intentional.

How is the game's performance now after a few patches?
Generally better. However there is still a big bug on the geoscape where the frame rate goes down to 20fps regardless of the graphic options; low, high whatever. Very annoying. It still needs work. MSAA still hits frame rate by a good 10 frames and retaliation maps still hit your frames quite hard.
This is with a 980, 16GB DDR3@2133mhz and 4770k@4.4ghz.

My takeaway from those patch notes: X-COM 2 has multiplayer? Never noticed that before.

I'm really excited for those rulers.

This is definitely a game that I'll return to when all the DLC and high quality mods are out, but I played it so much at launch that I still feel burnt out.

I managed to kill the Viper King during the first encounter because of an AI bug -- AI completely stopped! Are there more boss-like characters that I have to fight?

Also, completely weird but
during the Viper King autopsy, Vahlen's voice comes on as if she's doing the autopsy... but I haven't found her yet?

Same here. I don't know if it's intentional but I figured we were being referred to her research notes during the autopsy.

... Well, I just ran
into the modified Berzerker. :lol and on a rescue mission too -_-

edit: After several retries
I finally took knocked half its hp off before forcing it to retreat. Whew!

It retreats? Oh thank God.

You need to start a new game. Then you'll see. Basically there is a mission that comes with the DLC but it only starts with a new game.

I did...? The only thing I found was
the hidden facility with the Viper King inside
?

edit: Also, the last one
Archon King was the easiest of the three... but that's probably because I had a snowball built up by then

Well, in that case I guess you were hearing her recordings about the creatures whilst they were being autopsied. Tygen does mention he found some notes/recordings. The Berserker Queen was technically easier for me as I one shot her (praise the Superior Repeater)!

When do you get the weapons in a new game, anyway? I just started one, as in finished Gatecrasher and started building my first facility, but when and how do you get those weapons?

Also, it occurs to me that with the Rulers active, it might actually not be a bad plan to build the turret facility from now on. I can only imagine how much of a terror one of those things would be on an Avenger Defense mission.

You get them as a normal scanning mission that comes up. It'll show up with a slightly green background.

I personally have never seen them show up on an Avenger Defense mission... and I've gotten quite good at spotting when they'll show up on a mission. It's
when the difficulty looks very disproportionate... and I may be wrong on the next point, but I think the difficulty also changes from the initial mission screen to the squad selection.

Truth be told, they're only hard if you don't have the damage per turn or armor shredding to handle them. Flashbangs can sometimes work very well, but I've had mixed results with them. Free actions also don't trigger a Ruler Reaction, so that's a huge plus.

So I just finished a Commander run with Alien Hunters and
I kind of wish there was more content associated with it. Then again, it isn't a full fledged expansion like EW but it was still kind of disappointing...

The second ruler totally fucked up my run today. I had nailed the first, had the second one show up in the middle of a VIP kidnapping/assassination mission. She waltzes in, pummels most of my squad, kills my best range right before I get to the VIP, really short on time. I shot the bastard, and haul ass to the extraction point... only to be faced with two pods by the pad, and one really nasty elite Advent set of reinforcements that lands on my flank unannounced.

Result: one KIA, two wounded, three POW that never made it out. My elite squad, ruined. Next up I get a retaliation mission, the bloody queen shows up again, and although I managed to nail her, the four muton pod that came by kills the last remnants of my bravo squad. I am left with one captain, one lieutenant and one Sgt. plus a shitty PSI guy.

I never recovered.

I had to reload a couple of times to understand this ruler. Flashbangs are effective because she like to use AoEs and melee. Her melee attack may or may not be an activated ability, so that's probably why she was wandering around doing nothing.

some of the mods out there are really well done stuff, super impressed, my poor setup doesn't do the rendering detail justice either

BTW, at 10AM EST/7AM PST/3PM BST, there'll be some sort of XCOM 2 announcement, probably Shen's Last Gift or that they'll show it off at E3.

I'm hoping for console announcements. XCOM:EU is a GWG for the 2nd half of this month, and I had been wondering if there would be an XCOM 2 announcement to tie in with that.

not even a week after I bought it on pc and have to render it on minimal 720p for 30fps ;_;

oh well, don't mind supporting firaxis twice, super surprised it's coming at all though

Are alien rulers as OP as they sound? I want to play the DLC, but I don't want to progress and just have my squad get destroyed.

Hopefully the performance will be good on consoles, but I'd cross reference the developer with other projects they've worked on and hope that the performance is more in line with the game as it is now rather than early launch.

I'm curious about it. I probably won't play it on consoles, but I might grab one to support the cause. The 360 port of the first one was good, double dipped with that one too.

That's disappointing to hear. Hopefully there is a balance patch.
They're not that OP if you take your time and get up to Tier 2 guns and at least a few lieutenant ranked soldiers before doing the narrative mission. Keep in mind that Rulers can't do anything while you're in concealment or using free actions (Lightning Hands, ax throw, etc...), and you should be fine.

The rulers aren't OP. You just need to be prepared. Frost Grenades, Bolt Caster, and the Viper Suit -- along with a couple of Flashbangs -- is more than enough to take them on. In fact, the rulers get progressively easier because of when they show up.

The Ruler that gave me the most trouble was the
Berzerker Queen
. And that's before I discovered that
free actions don't trigger ruler reactions and flashbangs work on her.

All in all, your primary goal is to deal as much damage per ruler turn as possible, so things like Acid Grenades and stun/freeze are essential to taking them down.

What? No, the rulers, and the dlc weapons, are awesome IMO.

They're fun to tackle, and I like the extra diversity in the loadouts required to take them on.

Picked this up during the weekend Steam sale. This game is digital crack. Just one more mission....

I took out the Viper King during (Mission & Viper King spoilers)
a UFO attack that disables the Avenger which was the third time that he showed up. Since he escaped the 2nd time with 1 hp remaining, he went down really fast.
Really annoying bugger but not too bad.

I'm finding that this iteration on normal difficulty seems to get easier as you progress. I've lost 2 soldiers but that happened within the first 5 missions. Since then, I've been picking off enemies almost as fast as they show up. That said, I'm wary of turning up the difficulty in an XCOM game.

I haven't played in a while, and wanted to do a quick run, but the GPU is still going idle on the geoscape and now the squad select screen? 16fps, hello.

Nevermind, just going to uninstall it. Too many other games to play without going through this crap again. :p

So, after finishing a playthrough with the DLC on (well, technically didn't finished it, I have yet to do the 3rd blacksite mission and then the final 2, but I am fully upgraded and flawless-rolling everything, so meh) I decided to buckle up and try a heavily modded game.

Activated:
A better Advent (plus)
Escalation classes (thinking of adding even more classes just to make my game even more RNG-y by having soldiers being basically random mixes of skills)
Grimy's loot mod.
Overwatch ignores concealment
And other things that tailor the game to my preferences.
But the MVP, the mod that changes everything, the greatest idea, the mod that deserves a kiss:
Guerrila War

Let me preach you about Guerilla War.

Timers are gone. Almost completely. (tho maybe the timers that remain are part of another mod that adds more mission types). Easy, right? Wrong, motherfucker!

Instad of timers, 2 or 3 turns after you break concealement, reinforcements start coming every other turn, with increasing difficulty (like the avenger defense mission).
Also, the only way to complete missions is to evac, meaning if you want enemy bodies, you have to carry them with you by hand. (the larger ones like the mecs can only be recovered by use of an item called a futon something-something).

This is such a heavenly game changer because it is so 100% in theme that I am afrai I will not be able to go back to vanilla.
Advent has the world, they have infinite resources, there is no safe spot except the fact that they don't know you are there. Once the first advent spot you, it's game on, no arbitrary number demanding you complete the mission really quick, but a series of decisions of how much you want to rush vs how long can you hold on againt the literally endless enemies that the game throw at you.

Also, after calling evac, it doesn't come right away, you have to pass the turn 2 times before it does happen.
So, here is how an average mission looks like:

You have to do X, say, hack a thing.
You start, you have all the time in the world to plan your first assault. First blood drawn, NOW you are on a timer. At first there is deceptively no pressure. No numbers, no warning, no nothing, so you make your way through the objective careful to not mis-activate pods and whatnot.
Turns later, usually when you are in the middle of a fight, comes a reinforcement. Ok, all cool.
Another couple of turns later, reinforcements are both dangerous and frequent. This, plus the pods naturally on the map, means you are losing ground. Time to hack that shit and call evac.
Shit hacked, evac called, oh shit, two turns for evac. Ok, everyone regroup near the evac point, hold your grounds, troop!
HOLD YOUR FUCKING GROUND!
OH THANK THE COSMOS EVAC IS HERE, GRAB BODIES, GO GO GO

You never have the advantage. The mission starts at the highest, most safe and calm spot and everything starts to go downhill as a rule. By the time the objective is completed and you are evac'ing carrying a bunch of advent corpses on your shoulders, there is a good chance you are swarmed, hanging for dear life on a defensive position.

This situation lets you do all kinds of crazy modding without tipping the scales; like classes with rockets and whatnot because the missions are designed to, no matter what you do, you will eventually be overpowered (an easier or harder game is basically a question of how soon or how late it will take for the aliens to swarm you).

Mod still in alpha, modder promissing to add more stuff. It says on the description he really wants to tackle the strategy layer next to, once again, makes sure you are never straight-up more powerful than the aliens.

But I will say this is GAF, if you were waiting for XCOM 2's "Long War", there you have it. And just like Long War took the concept of an alien invasion and made it look like more like a war instead of a series of skirmishes; Guerrila War take the concept of the ragtag band against overwhelming forces to its logical and excellent conclusion.

Press subscribe and revilatize your XCOM 2 experience.

I do like the sound of Guerilla War. Will definitely try your mod layout.

For further reference, here is my list.

The thing is, since so many mods messes with balance, I can't honestly say if the game is balanced or not until I play a couple of campaigns, but so far it is awesome.

A couple of notes:
While the edited ragdoll physics mod is just cosmetic in Vanilla, on Guerrilla War it serves the purpose of letting you futon sectopods and tentacle-ball-thingies away because it makes them die on the ground and leave a corpse instead of exploding, so you really need it for your late-game experience.

I am debating with myself wheter or not to just add a fuckload of new classes, just ignroing balance and stuff because I really like the feeling that each soldier is a class on his own, which means that, given the game only start repeating classes after each one was selected once, if I have like 30 classes or something, I would probably never see a class repeat, making each soldier that much more of a special snowflake waiting to be crushed by the cruel fire of the fascist aliens.
