gunslingers are amazing, might be my favourite class?

i think i'm going to lose this game though, i'm doing really well in the tactical mode and have made good progress with research etc. but the avatar project is one block away from completion and the nearest secret facility is in russia, which i haven't made contact with :((
When you see the 'FACILITY LEAD' Hack reward it'll let you go to one without establishing regional contact if you need it. Otherwise continue doing main mission objectives.

oh lol, I actually got a actual 95% miss just now

edit: man, that was awesome. I was all ready to save scum but didnt, ended up hacking the sectopod for a stun, knocked out the VIP and carried him to extraction. But meanwhile after missing a 95% on a faceless (lol), the sectopod obliterates my longest running grenadier (which is when I was just about ready to save scum) but she was beeding out. So I grab her with one of my rangers, my main ranger (this guy is a monster) kills the sectopod with that double tap talent they get, and manages to avoid a missile barrage from a mech because of the perk that he cant be hit after a kill (lol), so I just ignored the mech, ignored the new faceless and had everyone spint to evac, and I got the bleeding grenadier out 1 turn before she would die

EXCITING

I still would have save scummed if it went wrong tho, IM WEAK

Falk

I've had 98% misses twice now. Yes, exactly 98% both times, not 99, not 97

It's probably my unlucky number.

Unfortunate experience:

Turns out, if you hack a Sectopod, and it winds up being the last enemy standing on a Kill All Enemies mission - you don't get the wreck.

I want my L3 Gremlins, damn it!

I finally jacked a MEC for the first time and... a muton killed it in one shot. dang. I was really looking forward to micro-missiling the shit out of things.

oh shit the soldiers you get from missions are super high level? just got a grenadier that is just missing the last talent o_O

I thought they were just like level 1s lol

Grenadier + Sharpshooter with Fan Fire = Sectopod dead before it can move.

Btw, has anyone else come across a game breaking bug where if your grenadier is the last to take his turn and launches a grenade which drops enemies on the roof to the ground, the game freezes and refuses to resume even after exiting to main menu and reloading?

I've had this happen to me twice now, once when I was nearing the end game with a solid team of highly leveled soldiers with Plasma weaponry and some sweet ass PCS and loot drops. So now I've played the game for almost 30 hours and am back to picking off Advent grunts with my shitty tier-1 weapons. :(

Next turn it detonates, the floor collapses and everyone falls, killing one team member and heavily wounding the other two.

To make matters worse my designated extraction zone was on that roof too.

Still made it out with just the one casualty but it was intense.

I haven't personally experienced that but I've read that you can still recover from that. It's not all lost.

A similar thing happened to me after an unexpected Muton grenade made a massive whole to the section of roof where most of my squad was standing. It Instantly killed the VIP and dropped three of my veterans soldiers to the building below which was already swarming with vipers, faceless, Advent mechs, mutons and other enemies. The same explosion also blocked the route to the nearby evac zone, which meant that the remaining soldiers had to take an alternative route where they were gunned down.

Been searching for this problem I'm having, can't seem to fix it...

So I'm trying to extract a VIP, my ranger is carrying him. The game automatically put an evac point on a rooftop which for some reason I cannot access with the vip being carried. So I blew up the roof with a grenade, evac point shifts... to ANOTHER rooftop, forcing the same problem. Now, I don't want to have to "kill" this VIP just to complete the mission, but I'm 4 turns away from failing and I'm running out of options, no more grenades to blow this roof up... Any ideas for getting a carried VIP onto a rooftop or is it just not possible?

Its a wonder why they don't let you set your evac points in those missions like the "blow the facility up" missions, odd gameplay choice.

Edit 1 - Found a solution, turns out I blew up all the "pipes" used to climb up to the roof. Reloading a prior save and didn't blow the pipe up, problem solved.
Edit 2 - Well, it worked, but turns out you can't blow up the pipes, game just bugged out on me. Weird, but oh well, VIP is safe.

anyone try to take lower level guys with you so they can rank up and get the good skills instead of using your best guys?

my monster of a ranger has all the skills now and I feel its a "wasted" spot when I could be leveling others :(

Nope. And it's probably a flaw of my gameplay, but I can't not bring people who I know will get the job done.

Is it just me, or is the
base defense
mission a joke compared to EU/EW, where it was terrifying as all hell? Take concealed ranger near the target and the squadsight sniper destroys it in two turns. Mission succesful.

Towards the early mid game, once you've got a good A-team of Majors/Colonels you don't really need 6 top-level guys for ANY mission except the 3 pip Blacksites.

For all other missions my team always has my 2 main grenadiers, main gunslinger and main ranger. The other two spots I keep switching between my main specialist, a substitute gunslinger and a lower level guy of a class I feel has weak substitutes.

Depends on what map you get. The two times I've had to
defend the Avenger
, I've had
the Spike, behind a wall
which my sniper couldn't have destroyed from anywhere but very close to it so I just hacked a Mech and used him to bomb the area around it.

ok, seems I got a pretty easy map. It was tiny.
My ranger could see the target in two blue moves. Could have even grenaded after one dash with my grenadiers.

I didn't even realize I could hit the spike from so far away in the
base defense
mission. So I wasted my time killing the entire first group.

Does a physical version of this game exist, and if so, does it actually have a disk with install data on it or is it just a steam code?

I posted about this some time back as I had ordered the physical version. The good news is that you get 4 DVDs with the physical copy but you still have to download around 300 MBs.

Beat the game last night.

Last fight was tough, but only because my squad get separated a lot and hit by disabling attacks. Once I was able to focus down the important targets it was simple.

Overall the game is really good, need to make a non-save scum playthrough and use the things I didn't use the first time. Gunslingers here we come. Also I never used psychics until the last bunch of fights. Everyone was buff as hell though by the end. Researched all things, had access to all proving ground projects, etc.

I wish I had known the importance of building comms and making contact earlier on. I have 3 facilities that I'm scrambling to get to from 1-2 regions away, and the the Avatar clock is one tick from midnight.

Oh well. This game is so much fun I won't mind restarting if I have to, although I'll miss my soldiers.

So I just did the second Black Site mission
retrieve specimen
on another playthrough, set up perfect Overwatch traps for every pod, massacred a Sectopod in one turn, got in, opened the stasis chamber, fought my way out, waited at the Extraction point to kill 2 reinforcements worth more of goobers as they came in for more XP, then extracted. Took like 30 turns total and about 45 minutes of play, just for old time's sake since there's no turn limit.

Mission Failed.

Forgot to actually
carry the specimen with me from the facility

Uninstalling

edit:
although I'll miss my soldiers.

Add to character pool!

You're sprinkling magical baby powder on a guerrilla figher who's trying to stay hidden. I can't see any situation where this has a happy ending. :p

These bugs are working for and against my favor.

Physics in general though seem to be extra broken in this game, even though it's the most effective way of taking out enemies.

Blowing out all the supports of a watchtower only for it not to fall apart because the ladder is intact is bullshit though.

Almost cost my best soldier.

Yeah, the physics is kinda wonky in-game. I've had instances where even after blowing up the roof, a Sectoid didn't fall and kept floating in the air, though, to be honest, it only happens in early game (as far as I've experienced, anyway). Once you have upgraded Grenade Launchers and bigger blast radius for your grenades, everything blows up just right.

I have more than given up on this games random broken rules, and learned to live and deal with ti's cheap assness.

Example, why do aliens get almost an entire turn during my turn as a interrupt when I see them.

That makes no sense, if I am moving my guys in cover, they are not seen, why do the aliens get to move then?

So I have now taken that shitty example and turned the game against itself.

I know for a fact that the aliens are there, so I place all of my team but one in overwatch. I move the one guy forward to cover, so it sets off the aliens "freeturn", which then sets off my overwatch.

What a cheap ass game

lol wtf why isnt the evac order available after a spring all of a sudden?

or better yet, why can 4 of my guys evac and 2 cant? lol fuck off with these bugs firaxis

Congratulations, you've learned strategy. The aliens getting a free move to cover is essential to the game because otherwise you could just sprint someone forward at the start of your turn, catch them all standing around like a bunch of idiots, and wipe them out.

So after playing EU in Xbox 360 and EW in PS3 and PC, decided that I couldn't resist anymore and bought this. Can't wait to get home.

This is the first time I buy a PC game full price.

Wow. I think I made the right call - had to evacuate all 6 soldiers in a retaliation. On the turn I evacuated I had only 6 civilians left (1 saved), and I was surrounded by 3 pods and a faceless. Made the decision when a Mech blew up the building my snipers were in, canceling their actions.

The consequences weren't huge, am I crazy? I lost a connection in Western Europe, but I immediately made contact again. Took a supply hit, and the council was mad disappointed but . . . None of my squad died.

It's not that I don't agree that they get to make a move to cover, but I've seen them take full turns cause of this, in the middle of my move.

That makes no sense

The game would be piss easy if they didn't move to cover when you detect them. Each mission would just be making a blue move with your whole squad each turn and shooting all the aliens you find out of cover.

And yes well done you're doing what you're supposed to. In fact you can make it better by dropping a grenade on them first.

would you prefer classic x-com "everybody in your skyranger dies by getting shot out of the darkness of fog of war"? pod activation is the price you pay for non-active units already on the field

That makes no sense

They get a single move action and will do it to cover. They'll also do it from the discoverer meaning you can flank 'em easy.

if you're getting shot in the middle of your turn something's buggy

They don't make a full turn, just scramble into cover. They don't shoot unless you make a full move into non-cover with your revealing soldier.
