XCOM 2 |OT| Be Aggressive! Be Be Aggressive!

Personally, I've found ADVENT Officers and their markers to be more troublesome to my squads. In a prolonged firefight, it leads to a dead soldier more often than not...

The lancers just kinda run up, poke someone, and then get smoked via a flanking attack. Annoying but manageable.

Unless they knock your dude unconcious.

That's really obnoxious.

(Though now that I stop and think about it I'm not sure if it's happened to me since I got Predator armor...)

BAwahaha, was in an Advent facility mission and i knew reinforcements were gonna come so i had all my units in Overwatch around the red flare and as soon as they landed they got destroyed. that was sweet justice.

I got to 0:17 of the video and I saw him shooting at enemies 1 tile away from the edge of the roof, i.e. no cover and I closed the video because it was too scary to watch.

This game has affected me.

:(

Yeah, it's the famous "who gives a shit, we'll die anyway" tactic. It's very special ;)

They didn't even get off the skyranger!

Accuracy. Geographic accuracy was lost.

Once landed in northern Siberia only to learn that I'm apparently in Beijing. I guess the aliens moved a few cities around, nbd.

Wait, so the enemies will attack it no matter what? I was throwing it into open ground so it appeared to be the juiciest target. I just assumed they were attacking it because it was the best option. That's why I continued to throw them in the open.

i throw it behind high cover. my squad can safely stand in the open because mind control is strong lol

I have found this to be the most satisfying thing to pull off. It's usually mildly concerning when Central comes on and says reinforcements are inbound, but boy does it ever put a smile on my face when the red flare happens to be right in the middle of the XCOM death squad.

Edit: Put 6 hours into Veteran twice and gave up twice. Started the game a third time on easy and have since beaten it to the end. I have probably put way too much time into this game since it released. Now that I've done easy to the end I think I am comfortable to go back and try to do veteran all the way to the end.

So how do PCS or combat stims or whatever work? You can only get them from the Black Market right? I assume they're reusable? Do you need to trigger them?

They drop as loot too.

You apply them near the weapon upgrades in the menu.

You can't reapply them by default, but one of the continent bonuses lets you (though they are random so not sure it appears every game).

Also: this still basically applies (cover mechanics from EU2012). Not much has changed other than exposed being considered 'flanked', probably for AI/perk purposes.

Study it:

Just had a CTD while making characters in the pool. Feels bad. Might've been because of the Steam overlay; I was using the web browser right when it happened.

Oddly, XCOM 2 tried to start again after that, then completed installation (again) and errored out because "Steam is busy."

...weird stuff.

Oh. That's never happened to me--didn't even realise it could happen.

Yeah, ok, lancers are dangerous again.

One thing I didn't like about the ranger sword was the upgrade going from stun > burn

Like how is burn better than stun in any possible way?

Gotta say, sometimes I feel like Hannibal Smith and my XCOM squad feels like the A-Team, because I love it when a plan comes together.

Just had the most epic mission yet - 8 turns to destroy a relay? No problem. First turn I scout forward and a pod of a regular MEC, Heavy MEC, and a Trooper walk into range but don't see me. So I EMP grenade the pod to kill the normal MEC and weaken the heavy MEC's hack defense - snipe the Trooper, and then hack the heavy MEC and take control of it. Send the heavy MEC forward and use its missiles to blow a hole in the building so now my team can see the relay easy. Move my team forward, staying behind the MEC - and use my Specialist to hack another system which, you guessed it (maybe), gives me control of a random enemy. This enemy happens to be a Muton standing on the roof with a Shieldbearer. However, as the Shieldbearer "activates" my sniper on overwatch from across the map puts one in his brainsteam and the Shieldbearer doesn't even make it off the roof.

Next turn - I use the Muton to drop a grenade on an unactivated pod of an Archon and two Codexes, which split up and activate another pod consisting of another Archon and two more Codexes. A rookie team would be scared shitless, but I moved forward with a plan. I used the heavy MEC to kill one of the split Codexes, moving my guys into position and waiting. Then, after the pods used their turns to attack and kill my hacked/mind controlled enemies, I struck. I used an acid grenade on one Codex, killing one and making another split. Then I tried to kill a Codex with a Lightning Hands sniper, but it grazed him - so now I have four Codexes and two Archons on the field.

I put my Ranger into position and flash-bang three Codexes and one Archon, disorienting them and keeping the Codexes contained and unable to teleport. Then I set up a Kill Zone with my sniper and watch the fireworks. Two Codexes and a large chunk of Archon health goes down. Next turn, after finishing off the wounded Archon and getting the number of Codexes on the field down to two, I throw out a Mimic Beacon to distract the remaining enemies. I proceed to focus my attention on wiping out the last Archon, and when the remaining two Codexes teleport to try and flank my troops, they take up residence right underneath my sniper, who pops one in the head with his rifle and then shoots the other in the face with his pistol.

Finished the mission with only one soldier of mine taking damage from a lucky shot. I feel like a Commander now.

Unless I'm massively misunderstanding how the status effects work:
- Stun removes one action point. Most units have 2 per turn.
- Fire prevents a host of abilities from being used and damages them every turn. For several turns.

It's a pretty clear upgrade.

Oh maybe I misunderstood, I didn't know burning stopped abilities.

i'm just glad acid or poison only procs at the beginning of turn. I've run through a massive posion-acid storm I made to get to evac before without even having to get any bed rest.

Just beat the game on commander.

*End Spoilers*
That last mission was ridiculous. Do the enemies keep re-spawning until you kill the last avatar? I know they're randomized. Oh any my last turn was ridiculous:

Team is getting rushed by 3 Bersekers> Mind controlled a Andromedon with my Avatar > Melee'd last enemy Avatar with Andromedon > Avatar teleported in range of sniper > Sniper hit a crit on enemy Avatar> Avatar teleported within range of my Psi operative> Psi operative blasted that motherfucker with Null Lance

Damn this game is great. I can't wait for mods/dlc

I have no problems with %, but the dodge mechanic pisses me off sometimes. Oh, look, four people hit that viper for a total of 8 damage. % to hit is determined by how you play, but what do you do against dodge other than go *falk face*
Yeah I also think the dodge and graze mechanic is dumb.

Man, I know even thinking about doing an LP the way I did the last one is giving me the "YOU SERIOUSLY DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THIS", but god the situations you could get into and the way I could write that shit up...! Ugh. I should wait for a few months though just so some patches and mods get released.

Is there any way to like delay the timer on the missions where you need to stop uploads and time crunched things like that? I nearly always reach them exactly one turn late and I'm sprinting as much as I reasonably can but the timer starts out so low that sprinting is the only option to get there and then when you do they have traps set up with the good ol turn advantage to punish that.

I end up being able to do a normal move to exactly within one square of the target zone and if you sprint you can take the action that they want you too. Shit is frustrating as hell. I've mostly been trying to avoid fighting to get to the objective but you can't do that either because they set up enemies on all sides of the objective that literally have their sight zone on the objective.

Are you using a specialist? Only needing LOS to the objective rather than being right up on it helps a lot. (Gremlin OP)

It shows up exactly the same (that icon with 10100101010101 on it) except the range takes into account that you're using the Gremlin, sorta like how Grenadiers have extended range on their explosives.

I actually just let it countdown so that I can gank the reinforcements. As far as I can tell there's no penalty for that. I think the penalty IS the reinforcements, but to me that's more liked free EXP

Hahaha I thought there'd be consequences out on the Geoscape, since the dialogue made it sound that way.

I had a UFO attack mission. The clock was ticking down. I saw i had one soldier who could get to the device in time to stop the countdown.

She got there and proceeded to do nothing. Because you can't hack computers when you're on fire.

I couldn't even tell she was burning :|

Later I learned I could have just blown it up :|

This is where I tell you that the amount of xp anyone can earn per mission is hard capped.

Things yet to try: multiple bladestorm rangers standing on a flare muahahaha.

I miss ghost assault bombs from xcom eu.

Yet another example where proximity mines provide much laughter. I never leave home without them.

Question to those who finished the game: is the
tower
the last mission?

Yes, but
It's two parts, also spend all your intel. You cant do anything else anyway. Make a save too before you go in.

At what? How many kills? Is it like EW?

I swear my Rookie got 2 promotions in the field, but only applied 1 when I got back to base before. I've also been feeding 5-6 kills a mission to my backup grenadier.

It was part of some thread on reddit where they were taking the game files apart. I didn't check the exact formula.

Something else fun I learned: we get aim bonuses on all difficulty levels except legend. Yes, you even get bonuses on commander.

Hazaro

I'm debating if I want to start my next run on Commander again, this time going as fast as possible with Psi. Actually getting armor and plasma nades at not super late times should be all the extra oomph I need.

Every time I convince myself to start this I read about more glitches.

Seriously, should I hold off? I've got a backlog a mile deep so its not like I'm hurting for something to play.

I have played 20 hours and I have yet to see these glitches people keep talking about.

thats why i stopped using them. Feels like cheating. Went back using smoke, weaker, but at least make sense.

whats with the mimic beacons anyway. Is it a mind controlling device that mind controls enemy into attacking it brainlessly?

If game is allowed to cheat, so am I :) Only way RNG will screw you over is that you let the situation become so bad that your survival is dependent on the result of RNG. Mimic beacons in your pocket are your anti-RNG tool. Or, one of the many.

Other side of the coin: I've got around 26 hours played and I've seen almost every glitch people are reporting. I'm still going to finish it, but it's Bethesda levels of buggy.

The tower is the second-to-last mission. If any of your troops get wounded, you can take them on the final mission but they'll still be wounded (kind of like the base defense).

Depends on how tolerant you are of glitches/jank.

It's perfectly playable, there are some bugs that require a reload (i haven't encountered any personally, but they seem to happen to quite a few people) but the game autosaves every turn and you can save whenever you want.

It's for the most part animation glitches, camera can be wonky, there seems to be some visual issues with cover, that kind of stuff. Performance isn't great.

Still, i'm having a ton of fun. But i'm also the kind of person that enjoys, STALKER, new vegas ect. which especially at the beginning were buggy messes that could break. But they were also so good.

Apparently holding ctrl and right clicking makes waypoints so that you have more control over the path of your soldiers?

Jep, just like in an RTS. It can be useful for concealed mode or to avoid overwatch enemies.

I can't rember if it works with the sword, I think it sadly doesn't.

Alright, veteran ironman down. Only two deaths the whole game, and they were both squaddies who ate a crit in full cover back in April. Ended with 2.8 average turns remaining on the timers, too, which I feel pretty good about.

Bluescreen rounds and AP rounds really carried the back half. I'd have been more scared of big meaty things like berserkers compared to how robots get obliterated.

Definitely going to try rushing psi next time around. The training mechanic encourages it, and nothing says fun like dominating a shieldbearer and then blowing his buddies' cover up with their own grenades.

Works with sword, not with skulljack
For sword you just move as normal but you end the turn on the enemy square and you see the path change into a sword icon

Shit like this, right. The UI doesn't even show you the hidden aim bonuses you get from successive misses, or the hidden aim penalties the enemy get from successive hits.
