You don't hate remasters enough

I have been thinking about playing Asylum again but I just can't get over this:

They should just re-release the old versions.
You will buy the new ones when they release and you will like it.

Isn't Oblivion like a remakemaster? Gameplay code is from original with minimal changes, but visuals on new engine? I would prefer a real remake as Demon Souls.

The PS5 game is exactly that. Remastered visuals and audio on top of old code.

They susually like to call remasters a simple resolution bump.. maybe some textures and unlocked framerate. Plenty of examples. Demon's souls looks more like a remake.

Oblivion is basically a remake

If the only thing they did was port the game 1:1 to a new engine I wouldn't call it a remake personally. Sure they may have updated textures/models (something modders already do), but it's the exact same game at the end of the day.

I'm usually not a fan of remasters and prefer remakes so much more. But there's some decent remasters like FFIV PSP Remaster, and Warcraft 3 Reforged which is actually amazing now with custom games and especially custom campaigns along with tons of reforged stuff from the Hive Workshop. Then there's things like Skyrim Special Edition which allowed the game to be more stable while having more mods. The fan made PC only remaster SPHD of Resident Evil 2 and 3 were also amazing.

I dont have anything against remasters if they are on a +15-20 years game and they add good control scheme and QoL which were not possbile 15 years ago.
Also, bring it somehow to the 2020+ graphics standard.

I'm fine with remasters, so long as they're decent, run well, and don't hurt (or censor) core aspects of the game's identity.

Plenty of games are stuck on old consoles where the copies are ridiculously expensive, or require enough mod effort to get to run that it turns off the average consumer.

Breath of Fire IV being available on GoG for $10 DRM-free is better than $180+ for the physical Playstation version.

Ah, seems you are right.

Definitely fooled me since a lot of remasters are generally just glorified ports
That's exactly what they are, we just labeled them.
Remakes are slightly different, but generally we've been getting "remasters" since the 90's
I mean do know how many times Flashback would have been considered "Remastered" from 1992 to 1994?
Every Dreamcast port of a PSX game would be classed as a Remaster, hell most of the 360's library in the first year would be classed as Remasters.
They're just ports.

I really don't, what I don't understand is how some people behave as it buying a game is not a optional act, if you hate remasters and remakes don't fucking buy them end of the story.

They always fuck something up with remasters. Not an ounce of skill and integrity goes into them, they are basically avenues to make money as fast as possible with the lowest possible effort.

Not even direct ports are safe nowadays (see the Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 thread).

The problem is when the inferior remasters/remakes become the de-facto standard way to play the game going forward.

Nah, remasters are great when done well. As long as there's a balance of new games along with remasters then it's all good.
