You don't hate remasters enough

I have been thinking about playing Asylum again but I just can't get over this:

They should just re-release the old versions.
You will buy the new ones when they release and you will like it.

Isn't Oblivion like a remakemaster? Gameplay code is from original with minimal changes, but visuals on new engine? I would prefer a real remake as Demon Souls.

The PS5 game is exactly that. Remastered visuals and audio on top of old code.

They susually like to call remasters a simple resolution bump.. maybe some textures and unlocked framerate. Plenty of examples. Demon's souls looks more like a remake.

Oblivion is basically a remake

If the only thing they did was port the game 1:1 to a new engine I wouldn't call it a remake personally. Sure they may have updated textures/models (something modders already do), but it's the exact same game at the end of the day.

I'm usually not a fan of remasters and prefer remakes so much more. But there's some decent remasters like FFIV PSP Remaster, and Warcraft 3 Reforged which is actually amazing now with custom games and especially custom campaigns along with tons of reforged stuff from the Hive Workshop. Then there's things like Skyrim Special Edition which allowed the game to be more stable while having more mods. The fan made PC only remaster SPHD of Resident Evil 2 and 3 were also amazing.

I dont have anything against remasters if they are on a +15-20 years game and they add good control scheme and QoL which were not possbile 15 years ago.
Also, bring it somehow to the 2020+ graphics standard.

I'm fine with remasters, so long as they're decent, run well, and don't hurt (or censor) core aspects of the game's identity.

Plenty of games are stuck on old consoles where the copies are ridiculously expensive, or require enough mod effort to get to run that it turns off the average consumer.

Breath of Fire IV being available on GoG for $10 DRM-free is better than $180+ for the physical Playstation version.

Ah, seems you are right.

Definitely fooled me since a lot of remasters are generally just glorified ports
That's exactly what they are, we just labeled them.
Remakes are slightly different, but generally we've been getting "remasters" since the 90's
I mean do know how many times Flashback would have been considered "Remastered" from 1992 to 1994?
Every Dreamcast port of a PSX game would be classed as a Remaster, hell most of the 360's library in the first year would be classed as Remasters.
They're just ports.

I really don't, what I don't understand is how some people behave as it buying a game is not a optional act, if you hate remasters and remakes don't fucking buy them end of the story.

They always fuck something up with remasters. Not an ounce of skill and integrity goes into them, they are basically avenues to make money as fast as possible with the lowest possible effort.

Not even direct ports are safe nowadays (see the Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 thread).

I really don't, what I don't understand is how some people behave as it buying a game is not a optional act, if you hate remasters and remakes don't fucking buy them end of the story.
The problem is when the inferior remasters/remakes become the de-facto standard way to play the game going forward.

Nah, remasters are great when done well. As long as there's a balance of new games along with remasters then it's all good.

Some are bad or overpriced but a lot of them make the original even better. Just looking at recent ones:

- Star Ocean Second Story R
- Oblivion
- Persona 3 Re:Load
- Dragon Quest III HD

If anything I wish some had better budget to really shine. Games like Front Mission, Beyond Good & Evil or Soul Reaver deserved more improvements.

I only hate the ones who seem to miss the point of the original.

PC version isn't working right now either. The game desperately needs a rerelease, as it's not currently functioning in an ideal state on any modern platform.
It works fine and there are a myriad of mods available to enhance the game beyond its original graphics, including cut scene and texture replacements.

I'm aware of the mods, but I just checked last month on PC as I felt like playing through Asylum for the umpteenth time, and it no longer would launch, some kind of issue with GFWL if memory serves. I should clarify, we're talking about Asylum right?

The R for Star ocean is for « remake », and Persona 3 is also a remake.

Dragon quest is basically a HD-2D remake (unlike the FF remasters), and Oblivion is closer to a remake than a remaster.

Like most things, there are bad ones and good ones.

Nightdive remasters are amazing. Not everything is as bad as the Silent Hill Collection, thankfully.

PS360 was the generation of multiplayer and online passes, PS4/Xone was the generation ofnopen-worlds, PS5/XSX is the generation of remasters and remakes. Every generation has its own problems.

A good remaster that brings an old classic, not easily accessible anymore, to modern platforms is a good thing. Not sure why one would hate that.
Updating old games for newer hardware is a good thing, imo
They are bad unless they are EXACTLY the same as original.

That way Johnny Titwank Youtuber can be nostalgic about better times when he didn't have to worry about Adult things like paying rent and work.

50% of the games i buy and mostly like are ports of older games.

I recently modded an 8bitdo arcadestick with sanwa parts. And bought capcom home arcade 1 and 2 for 20 ish euro's

Fuck telling me what to like or not like

I don't necessarily disagree but Oblivion: Remastered is the official name of the game. And it plays mostly like the original except for a few critical improvements like the leveling system.

Second Story R is listed as "remastered" in the official Steam description but then called a "remake" in the same paragraph so it seems even Square isn't sure.

My point is those examples are games where the new one is straight up better than the original (at least the unmodded original for Oblivion) and therefore it was worth making a new one.

How is life in the alternative universe?

It's great! I didn't love Silksong but my wife is obsessed. My backlog is so long that I'm just now completing Silent Hill 2, and that was after Death Stranding 2. Before that I was floored by Expedition 33 (still need to go back and get the Platinum), and Battlefield 6 and Ghost of Yotei are mere days away.

If somehow I finish all that, I'm gonna pick up Hades II, KCD2, and maybe jump into Silent Hill F or Split Fiction!
