Your favorite obscure console feature

You can put a PS1 disc in your PS3, and it'll stream it to your PSP (remote play). I always thought you needed to Digital Downloaded versions to do that but nope.

Also, while the PS1 disc is in your PS3, head on over to Audio and you can rip the tracks/music from the PS1 disc, which i always thought was kinda cool.
It's true, just checked.

I believe it only works with Bravia TVs,

On the PS3; Settings-System Settings-Control for HDMI=ON

TV: Settings-HDMI settings-Everything ON/Yes

I don't know if this works on any other brand of TVs : ( Sorry.
Works with my Sharp TV. oldish model too.

Woah... I need to pop Strider 2 into my PS3.

I love the fact that the Sega CD and Sega Saturn played CD+G discs (aka karaoke discs)

the full install feature on 360.

the fact PS4 still hasn't announced if they'll have that feature is irritating me.

It's very ambiguously written which is frustrating indeed. It's likely but I literally just want a menu option "YES, COPY 100% OF GAME TO YOUR BITCHING FAST SSD L M A O" :/

Putting music CDs into a PS1 during gameplay to change the music.

Also putting the PS1 games into a cd player let you listen to some games soundtracks. Used to do it with Destruction Derby 2 all the time. Some tracks would be unreadable though and crash my cd player.

Thanks. Just bought a Bravia tv a couple of weeks ago. :) ill try this out.

PS2 had lots of fun goodies that were obscure/hidden as mentioned.

The GC tunes on startup that changed were neat.

One feature I got to try out pretty recently was streaming movies on my Wii U from my laptop.
(I had a really good .mp4 file to try it out with, and it was damn good...except for my laptop falling asleep.)

The 3DO light synthesizer that converted CD music to an awesome array of colors, shapes and visual rhythms. Used to blow away my friends who weren't into games. Great for parties, too.

Also, gamecube -> GBA cable for Pacman Vs. play.

Soooo, good. I'm still considering buying some old DS lites and playing the portable Namco Museum version as a party game.

This has been an awesome thread! The karaoke disc support on Sega CD and Saturn is probably my favorite mention so far.

Being able to stream TV from my PS3 with PlayTV to my PSP over Remote Play. Came in handy to watch football while doing the dishes.

Not obscure I'd say, but using and abusing the square button during video playback on digital content. Holy crap is it amazing for video
porn
playback.

I like how when selecting (certain) games in XMB, you get a cool full screen photo and music. Kind of neat.

Dreamcast's modem was mind blowing. I see someone else used it for the intended purpose in here. See: porn

People talk about rotating the PS logo on the PS2 - PS3 (at least OG) can do it as well.

S-Video support on any console can be called "obscure" (in the US at least) and the fact that I can say that with a straight face makes me very, very sad.

What do you mean? I have 14 different US consoles hooked up to my TV right now that support S-video, though the newer ones are hooked up via component:

Super NES
Jaguar
3DO
Saturn
Playstation
Nintendo 64
Dreamcast
Playstation 2
Xbox
Gamecube
Xbox 360
Playstation 3
Wii
Wii U

All support S-video. Hell, the Gamecube can output S-video and Component video at the same time, which is awesome.

What's rare, these days, are TVs that have S-video. :(

Back in 1999, I loved the horoscope, time zone and alarm clock features on the NeoGeo Pocket Color.

Jeff Minter interactive light synth/music visualizer programs...
Atari Jaguar CD - Virtual Light Machine (81 different display variants)
Nuon - VLM2
Xbox 360 - Neon (up to 4-player interactive)

The VMU on the Sega Dreamcast

Using the Sega Dreamcast fishing controller as a tennis racket was a pretty cool hidden feature. You could also use it in Soul Calibur like a sword. But I never had a chance to try that. But I guess that is not really a hidden console feature, ,ore like a hidden controller feature.

Also putting the PS1 games into a cd player let you listen to some games soundtracks. Used to do it with Destruction Derby 2 all the time. Some tracks would be unreadable though and crash my cd player.

This wasn't really a hidden feature, as you could do the same for a lot of Saturn, Sega CD, 3D0 and PCE CDRom games too. Though once in a while there were hidden music tracks on some of the game discs,

How is this possible?

The PS3 supports HID devices.

I can use my Saturn, SNES, N64, Gamecube and PS2 pads all on my PS3 via USB adapters. Yep, even N64.

Anyway, another cool feature: The Super Game Boy has animated borders. Leave your console on for a while with no button presses, and shit will start happening.

All the 360's USB ports are active and power pretty much anything even when off.

Just pliugged in my newly acquired 8-bit lit Mario Coin Block lamp and it powers it up, so awesome.

SNES, GC, and N64 had the same AV output. Same with the Playstations. Could reuse cables

As a child of divorced parents, this was useful as fuck. One set of cables already at each parent's house, and a third one that I could use for whatever I wanted. The GC being tiny was also useful in those days.

Can't believe no one mentioned the PSPgo! (or at least CTRL+F says so)

PSPgo is like the jack of all trades of the hidden features... it has:

  • Dualshock 3 support
  • Double joypad support for PS1 games (with a PSPgo attached to tv you can play 2 players PS1 games!)
  • In closed form, it keeps L/R button working for games like LocoRoco (I think it is the only game playable this way, not sure about it)
  • It has 16gb internal memory and memory stick support

The one I like the most is definitely the dualshock 3, with the tv cable it makes the PSPgo both a portable and home console!

surprised it wasn't mentioned, but I loved the few games that made use of the Wiimote's internal memory, such as Monster Hunter Tri and the Wii Sports games. You could take your character and stats with you whenever you went over to a friend.

Taking the disc out of the PS1 and continuing to play...until it needed to load. It was like some sort of black magic back then.

Speaking of, bring back the black discs. They were cool as shit.

HDMI CEC is a universal thing.

The PS3 Screenshot capture feature at an Firmware level... that almost no developer bothered supporting... :(

Original xbox anti trip controller cables. Amazeballs

IIRC, the instruction manual has a diagram of a toddler about to be crushed by the Xbox, but saved by the breakaway cable. Or maybe it was a puppy. I'm going to drag that thing out of storage and see...

In any case, it was just one small addition to the "Xbox is HUGE" jokes back then.

Oh man

I'm gonna boot it up right now. Does it work on the SGB 2 as well?

Using the Xbox 360 IR remote (or my Harmony One) to skip tracks when playing streaming music while playing a game. No need to bring up the Guide, the IR remote is always active.

Oh I forgot about this one! If you boot up an original Gameboy title on a Gameboy color or advance, when you turn it on as "Gameboy" is showing up you can push on the d-pad to change the "color" of the game. Since the game is meant to be played in monochrome you can incline the game to play in, blue, red, green or one more color set I'm forgetting.
