Friendly as in for instance one didn't try to implement DRM etc. One remains to have an online with no paywall.

Cerny's popularity shot after the reveal lol. Personally I grew respect for him after hearing about his career. Same for other industry vets. I even have respect for Mattrick after reading up on his history.

Which part? Sony's PR firm telling them to be friendly? Yes, I do know for a fact, Shu said it on the PS Blog podcast. But even if I didn't, it wouldn't mean I'm a fanboy, it would mean I couldn't prove what is obviously true.
 
"Fanboyism" is just tribalism. It manifests in sports, politics, brand loyalties, and more. It's human nature, and it doesn't automatically end at adulthood. Even supposedly rational people get caught up in it.
 
I've always seen it as "standing up to your team" in sports. You choose sides and stick to them. If someone talks shit about your team, you need to talk shit about their team. And when the enemy's team is losing you just need to rub it in - the harder the better. It's just like with sports teams, isn't it? I've always been a "gokiburi", I've never even considered buying an Xbox. I actually loathe Microsoft and their corporation mentality and the only thing I'm willing to give them any money is because of my PC's OS. I can't live without Windows unfortunately. :/

Even when it's adults buying themselves the console as opposed to relying on parents when they were younger, people still like to justify their purchase as the superior choice. The same thing applies to any market where there are only a small handful of competing products and companies. For example, I'll preach Android over iOS and Windows Phone all night and day when the topic comes up online or IRL.

And you know what? It's fun to argue over the merits of your preferred choice in entertainment as long as you restrain yourself from crossing the line and levying insults at people for disagreeing with you. Unfortunately with online "debates," however, anonymity makes it all too easy for even somewhat reasonable people to fall into that trap due to lack of consequence.

Its "like" sports in that you have a rooting interest. It's far more logical to me to root for something that actually is made to be a competitive spectator activity, and that has ties with family and community, than a piece of electronics. That's irrational to me.

In a way the console war is a spectator sport; we wait for the results of sold units, sold software and all that. Then there's the mistakes made in the marketing field from each team. It is really quite similar to sports. We have the company leaders, we have mascots (exclusive IPs), we have fanbois, we have drama, we have grief and sorrow and happy moments.

Actually it is just like sports. ;)

It's really not a spectator sport lol. If you're equating sales figures to games, then I guess, but that's the saddest spectator sport ever.

I forgot the part in my post where I made that EXACT statement. We're not getting ahead of ourselves at all are we?

You can voice your opinion however much you want my friend. Makes no odds to me and my life, knock yourself out. Or alternatively, you can find something important and productive to do with your time.
 
I easily have the money to afford every console, but I don't think it's the most economical to get every platform on the planet when I will be perfectly happy with just one.

So naturally that leads me to ask questions like "Which version of this next-gen game is better, PS4 or Xbox One? Which exclusives are better? Which console has more features?"

Because in the end, I'm only making one investment because I don't have enough time for both. So I want to make sure that my investment into the ecosystem is the right choice.

Consoles for me are like smartphones. People don't tend to have both Apple and Samsung smartphones. They tend to pick just one and invest in a particular OS ecosystem.

Because you cheer for your home team. If you used an argument such as NFL vs NHL, then you would have a better argument.

But rooting for a specific team is nothing like supporting a specific console.

You cheer on your home team because the sense of a community coming together to support them to win a Stanley cup or the Lombardi Trophy, gives the feeling of your community winning the championship.

What benefit do you get from supporting a console? I just don't see the correlation.
 
People do this for more than just consoles. Cars,Tvs,phones,laptops etc What they own must always be better then what they don't.
 
I think the sports analogies are off base.

Sports teams are in organized leagues with one concrete black/white main goal. Not everybody can be extremely successful. Many would argue that only ONE team (per league per year) is extremely successful.

Gaming is a business which can and does have multiple winners at any given time. Adults sparring over sports can be considered childish. But I feel that hardcore console warring is on a more extreme level.
 
Because each platform have their own exclusive games, they are good reasons to own multiple platforms. (This is different than owning multiple phones,DVD players,TVs,cars etc that basically just do the same thing) doesn't matter which platform you choose you miss out on so many exclusive games you don't get to play if you own only one platform

Yes I think a lot of this "war" is people that can afford only one console that have to justify why the one they have is better than others, plenty of adults live paycheck to paycheck and don't have the disposable income to own all platforms .

From a viewpoint of someone like me, who has never enjoyed following sports, or found any value in the activity, rooting for a team just because they come from the same area seems equally irrational. Actually, I prefer if the Finnish teams and athletes lose the big matches and events, as the winning always results with annoying fanfare around the city and the media for weeks. ;)
 
I usually stay out of it, but I'll dump on Microsoft when there's an opening. I've always hated that they got into the console business. Yeah, it's good for Sony to have actual competition in the market, but a lot of the time it seems like they're just slapfighting over exclusive DLC.

I couldn't care less about which console is more "powerful"; if there's a decent amount of games I want to play for it, I'll buy it. Simple as that.

The only time I will actively rag on a system is when it has a stupid price/"feature"/limitation that affects playing games. The various Xbox One announcement fiascoes made me steer clear of the system since launch, but it since the OS was updated to fix all of my problems with it (no storage management, crappy party system, no 5.1 over optical) I'll get one whenever there's a decently priced bundle.

I'm also a collector though, so that plays a big part in having more than one platform.
 
It's like Bloods vs Crips or something, in the same sense that if given the chance, they'd definitely slash each other's throats to secure their dictatorship come alive. They feel a part of something bigger, in this case, some pretty entertaining shit. I don't have a problem with it. I think it's beyond even sports fanboyism. As long as I'm laughing, I don't care who's butthurt.

I think when everyone poops on corporations for trying to "extract money" from the innocent consumer, we forget that these companies are made of people like us. We don't care if hundreds lose jobs as long as we can pay 100 less for the new console. It's all a balancing act and no one is evil, but everyone is selfish.

This is a topic about "console wars" and my original post was a response about how people have all the right to be disgruntled towards Microsoft or whoever tries to pull anti-consumer tactics and that it should not be misunderstood as your typical console warrior fanboyism.
If we have all the right to voice and discuss opinions, why are you so insisting on how little impact it may have? Because let me tell you, you're not breaking any news (at least to most, I hope) on how little potential impact voicing an opinion on the internet may have.

I recently photographed award entries for a car club, all owners of a particular famous make of Italian sports cars. These club members/enthusiasts were absolutely as far from the common definitions of "walking tragedies" as anyone could be. There were famous people, creative people, captains of industry and the like. And guess what? Half the time they were talking shit about the enthusiasts of the OTHER famous brand of Italian sports cars.

Like Scrooged said, it's just human nature.

Is it your opinion that the management and staff heading up one company is just sincerely nice, and that other companies are actually malicious in their willful attempts to pull one over on gamers? The statement you're reacting to really isn't stretching. It would be unacceptable for any publicly-traded, multi-billion dollar company/division to not use the services of a marketing firm to plan out public impressions and mindshare. What you've implied by your reaction is closer to you own accusation than anything else.

You've confused having an opinion with something else. I "care" whether a Chevy Cobalt is a better buy than a Ford Focus, in the same way I "care" which system makes the most sense as an entertainment purchase. Your post reads like an indictment of a completely normal sort of value assessment.
 
What does it mean to "console war" ?

Is that when people voice their displeasure with a console maker's policies, design choices, deceptive advertising and PR, paying off the media and YouTube bloggers, and insulting their customers?

Or is it voicing their displeasure when one port of a game runs half as well as another on a console that costs about $100 more?

I would say console warring is more like people defending one console's power and relevance in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. What happens after that is all reactionary in the interest of truth.
 
Why do any people war about anything? You have people going at it over sports teams, over brands, over cars etc. I think people want to feel like the system they've purchased is the best

If it's not for that reason then it's just for the shits and giggles

Car rivalries that are kept going by fans in particular are quite common. Like Ford vs. Chevy or Lamborghini vs. Ferrari. In general you can visit car forums and find people with complete allegiances to certain manufacturers.

iOS = Xbox One/Xbox 360: Was once the dominant force but now declining in sales, closed ecosystem.

Android = PS4/PS3: ecosystem is a little more open, becoming dominant force.

Windows Phone = Wii U: Nobody gives a shit.
