I cant get over metroid prime being 60 fps

I mean wow, im assuming prime 2 and 3 were also atleast targetting 60 fps.
How can such a graphically intensive game(for the gamecube) have such a framerate, especially prime 2. Thats like if the last of us managed to pull off 60 fps on PS3 or halo 4 for that matter.

Didn't know that, but it always looked phenomenal. I'd assume the limited space (lots of corridors and such) contributed to lessening the load.

To be fair, it did compensate by having individual rooms being very small and closed-in. I don't think it ever loaded more than about 5 characters at a time, and enemy AI was very simple. The game was almost constantly loading the next room.

Leave it to Nintendo to get the best out of their own machine.

F-Zero GX is also very impressive on GC and had a butter smooth 60fps framerate

Clever use of doors. Each segment was separately loaded and I assume was polished to run at 60.

It's pretty tiny, but yes, it was certainly a technical achievement.

Also, the best GC game, not too shabby.

Nintendo generally prioritizes gameplay over graphics. Like you'll see that Metroid Prime doesn't have the technical edge in graphics like somes Xbox titles that are around 20-30FPS generally like Riddick and Doom 3.

Also, wait till you see F-Zero GX in motion.

there's no fmvs and the texture work is pretty average (I actually prefer Prime's use of geometry anyways). the game loads small rooms at a time and there's a visible load time when opening some doors.

The MP trilogy was fucking amazeballs. The atmosphere, immersion and gameplay. And all at a locked 60fps, so smooth and fluid. It's no surprise so many people are up in arms about Retro working on DK. It's not that DK isn't awesome, it is. It's just not MP.

The same way that got galaxy to look awesome and be 60fps. Small areas and hidden loading. Each planet was loaded during a flying star segment and it was the only thing rendered until you blasted off onto the next planet. In metroid, Each room was small and once you shot a door and went through it it would load the next room. It's clever.

F-Zero X for N64 had 30 racers at 60fps

F-Zero X was a very glaring exception to the rule, though. Nintendo's games generally had stable framerates, but they weren't very high. And even then, Nintendo still had some really uneven games when it came to framerates for the Gamecube, particularly Super Mario Sunshine.

Admittedly they achieved it with some compromises. Some games need the performance and some don't.

That being said, I think they did a good job with the comic book art style for F-Zero X that helped explain why everything looked so basic, so there's that.

I actually really love the 90's comic book artstyle, it fit the universe amazingly, I wonder if they can get away with it today.

Actually this is SEGA developed game (AV), not Nintendo.

OP, comparison with TLOU and Halo 4 is more than pointless. Different hardware, different studios, different design philosophy and so one...

Through, I admit, Metroid Prime looks ridiculously good at 60FPS on original hardware.

Because Nintendo/great devs are able to get their priorities right. Playability and gameplay first, then follow your artistic vision. Not the other way around, pumping needless effects and details in your game, which have far less impact on the overall quality than a great framerate.

The GC was SO underrated as a console. It was super optimized and easy by comparison to program for. Besides looking like a fisher price toy, it kicked serious ass. I loved it!

Great game, but not cinematic enough.
I know this is a piss take, but MP felt plenty cinematic. The atmosphere, the details, scanning dead alien bodies and suspecting what killed them might still be there, Etc.

There are many who argue high framerate can't be "cinematic" but that is a lie

It's quite interesting to see a series like Metroid Prime Trilogy run at 60 FPS and then see developers try to come up with excuses when failing to do the same with PS4/Xbone stuff two generations later.
