PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Talking about Dark Alliance co-op, my brother sometimes insists on playing it with him, to unlock the extra difficulty.
I'll have to humor him one of these days.

Yeah never got to try them back when they first released but after booting them up they seem like awesome coop games with great fantasy story underpinnings!

The Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance developers also made Champions of Norrath and Champions: Return to Arms, which are even more great co-op action RPGs that I've wanted to pick up.

BG:DA2 was a great pick up at $5, I payed $30 for mine last year and felt ok about it. It has a pretty cool weapon crafting system the first game didn't. I have both dark alliance games and both champions games, love them. Really sad that snowblind is basically dead.

These cables suck, don't buy them!!!

I've been through hell today with them.

1st, it's hard to get it in the socket as you have to tighten it to get it to fit, which is already a problem because my composite cables fit in the socket very easily with no hassle just like my other cables for other systems I've used.

2nd, the red dots, every screen I go to, from the system menu to the games, I see these red dots of death all over the screen, I mean, how is this acceptable???

I can't adjust the settings to fix the screen due to the system menu being 480i which is what my Avermedia Gamebroadcaster HD hates.

3rd, my capture card is having a hard time detecting this cable when games are under 480p(like 480i like lots of PS2 games), so I have to make due with composite through Dazzle for now, or get a svideo cable and new component cable someday.

I did direct feed screens with composite and it's so ugly as interlacing in motion just kills the picture.=O It has to be in stills, lol.

These are honestly the worst cables I've own.

I remember playing BG:DA co-op back in the day. Fun times.

Yeah me too, got repetitive after while, but really fun co-op nonetheless.

They're pretty great. I played them before I knew anything about Baldur's Gate 1 or 2.
So when I finally started to play Baldur's Gate, I was a little confused.

Haha, yeah I could see that. I remember seeing a friend play BG2 on PC a while before another friend got the PS2 game. I was a little confused too, lol.

Recently picked up a few more PS2 games. Got The Suffering, Predator: Concrete Jungle, Legacy of Kain, Scarface, Battlefront, and Battlefront 2 all complete at a yard sale (Love that you can still grab these for a buck or two). I also picked up Steambot Chronicles and Under The Skin off a fellow Gaffer in the Buy/Sale/Trade thread.

Was wondering if anyone had impressions of The Suffering, Under the Skin, and Steambot Chronicles? Specifically considering a playthrough of Steambot Chronicles but would love some impressions on any of those three from Gaffers.

Under The Skin didn't get rave reviews back in the day, but I think it's underrated really. It's quite an interesting game, as you need to tranform into people with different abilities to get coins.
I like the game, however not many people I know actually know about it. On a side note, I've done a gameplay video on it just in case you'd like to see it:

It ain't the best filmed video, but hopefully should give you an idea on how the game is!

Steambot Chronicles was a very ambitious game, but it felt like the developers didn't quite have the technical competence to match. Among other things, the game includes mech-based combat, a morality system, commerce, a stock market, dating, and a rhythm game (note: the songs are cringe-inducing). You also have to do "realistic" tasks like eat food and buy fuel. Nothing here is very deep, including the the combat, although the story does allow you to go down a full-blown evil route if you feel like joining the villains instead of fighting them.

The biggest obstacle to getting through the game, honestly, might be the loading times - areas are small and simplistic, yet the loading times while moving between them are enormous.

I picked up The Mark of Kri and Rise of Kasai. Honestly...I'm not loving them. Very bland, long load times. Curious combat, but I'm not struck.

I did pick up Soul Reaver 2 and I have Katamari Damacy to be delivered today, though, and those are rad!

Sounds more like an issue with your terrible capture card or TV, not the cables.

Nope, it's the cables...I tried it on multiple HDTVs in my house and I get the same red dot effect(24-40 inch ones), yet I don't get red dots with composite cables. I don't get this problem with my other systems and cables when using my capture card so it leads to the cables most likely being faulty.

I've used generic cables like the ones you just posted about for years and I have zero issues. But if you want something with a better guarantee, get Monoprice PlayStation Component cables, they're high quality.

Thanks for the response. It is definitely a lesser known title. I had known about it and I always wanted to pick it up if I came across it at the right price. Since I love picking up the harder to find and/or lesser known titles I planned on getting it for my collection. In theory it sounds like an amazing gameplay idea.

I'll take a look at the video when I get a chance. Thanks again!

Thanks for the feedback. In a lot of ways it sounds like a really good game but it's just held back by a few flaws?????

Yeah, sacrificing decent camera control for a lock on targetting system that could be done by a button was the biggest offence IMO. Its a shame becase I was actually digging the lore in the first game.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try to replace them, this is the 1st time I seen something like this for any cable I owned so it surprised me to even see that happen.

How is Disaster Report? Any reason to play it if I have Raw Danger?

I love both games, I've finished Raw Danger last month and I myself love these games. Do play Disaster Report, it's not really related plot wise, but it's an experience that has to be played.
There aren't enough disaster-type games, to be honest.

Argh... I'm feeling the temptation to buy Dark Cloud 1 again. If I'm just going into it for some serious dungeon crawling, will I be satisfied?

I loved Disaster Report. Saw all endings, collected all compasses and got an S-rank run/time in it (lol!). In fact, even though Raw Danger is technically a better game/more interesting (what with the multiple characters/scenarios), there's something about the original that just did it for me more than the second game. Grant it, I never did complete all the scenarios in Raw Danger so maybe I'm missing out on something I've yet to see/experience. I think they're both worth playing if you like one game or the other.

Does anyone have experience repairing a PS2 Slim that won't read discs? I have an original PS2 Slim (with the laptop style power adapter) and it went through a process where it slowly stopped reading discs. I replaced it with a newer PS2 Slim when they were still available at retail, but I'd like to repair it if possible.

Just bought Dark Cloud 2 for 14 bucks.

I also bought some PS3 component cables, and not only do they work, but there's no red dots either, more proof that the PS2 component cables I had earlier were faulty, here's a 480p screen of Socom 3 using these cables.

I'm glad those red dots are over with.

Is it worth it to install FreeMCBoot to get Xploder and/or GS Mode Selector? Is the difference really visible, and does it work with every game? I really feel like playing some PS2 these days, but the image quality on my HDTV is pretty bad unless it's one of those rare 480p games...

The difference is massive depending a bit in your TV. But no, the modes don't work on every game by any means. Some support 480p, some 720p, some 1080i, some multiples of those, and some neither. You just have to try or check out the compatibility list.

Is there a guide on how to launch xploder from freemcboot?

Great news, man.
I wanted to try the Component cables I've got on my HDTV as a test. I did try them a few years back but then I've bought a CRT and didn't need them at that time.

Dat ass on Alice.

Anyways I just got Bloody Roar 3 today which is my 1st Bloody Roar game, been playing as Alice, Jenny, Uriko, Yugo and more and I'm enjoying it so far. Now I want to get the other Bloody Roar games.

How come some PS2 games that are listed to support 480p don't even have the option for it in the menu yet all the Socom games, GT4, Jak X Combat Racing and such do(which I own all BTW). I have Urban Reign and recently ATV Offroad Fury 4, both listed as 480p yet I don't see it anywhere in the game menu.

Oh well, fun games still, though interlacing can be a bit too much.=O

When booting up a game hold down

or

until it prompts you to display in progressive scan. Unfortunately a lot of progressive scan-compatible games don't have it listed as a menu option and must be enabled it that way.

When supported you can enable it by holding triangle and X buttons at boot. I don't understand why it was included this way rather than through normal menu options. It's a pain having to check the list game by game.

Didn't seem to work for ATV but I got it to work with Urban Reign, and it's definitely better now, definitely when you look at her arms/hands in this comparison:

Anyone know where I can pick up a brand new PAL PS2 slim for a good price?

I'm specifically looking for the SCPH-9000CB model.
It's the revised slim with the built in power supply and subtle cosmetic changes.

I now have both Xenosaga Episodes I and II, I being 10 bucks and II being 8 bucks used but they work perfectly. Now I just need Episode III which won't be cheap sadly.

Is there any other way to get Dragon Quest VIII to run in 480p? I know about GS Mode Selector and Xploder but neither wanted to get along with my copy of the game. Might be a region thing? I thought that one was supposed to work.

God I loved that game. It was one of the first PS2 games I got, back in Christmas 2003 I think (I got my PS2 at Christmas in 2002 but only had Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex, Jade Cocoon 2, Gauntlet Dark Legacy, Jet Iron GP (I think that was it's name- it was a Wipeout clone), and the first two TimeSplitters games). But yeah, Bloody Roar 3 was awesome. Never played the other games, and didn't like the art style or other characters in the sequel, but BR3 was awesome.

My favourites were probably Xion, Uriko, Jenny, Shenlong, and Stun.

I also still believe that Stun is one of the coolest looking characters in any fighting game.
