Shovel Knight |OT| The 8-bit adventures of Butt Butt Goes to Europe & Australia

Was really on the fence about buying this yesterday. More because I was getting conscious about how much I was buying in this sale, ha ha and I wasn't expecting it to over £10, was thinking it'd perhaps be £8.
Still decided to pull the trigger in the end and was very happy and impressed with what I played yesterday, music is awesome and finding gameplay really fun too. This is a game I really hope comes to vita too (..alongside more AAA games...). They did say they would like it on vita, so that's hopeful.
To use their words from the stream earlier, "We want it on every platform in the universe if we can."

If you provide them with the relevant info, they should be able to add support for it.

Ooooooh, I see - I followed the first step of the link and bound my controller inputs via Steam Big Picture which suddenly just made the Saturn USB pad work in-game as well. Cool!

Uploaded the text string as well if it'll make the pad work natively. Might hook up my NeoGeo USB and do the same later.

In this image, does anyone know where the evil smile, the clown and the dog behind the Dig Dug dude are from?

Can anyone get their nes mayflash adapter to work? I tried and no luck with my original nes controller which I thought would work best for this game

I love the Dynamo Mail. So fun to use.

I've been playing with Wii U Pro pad and a Saturn pad. Anything with a good d-pad should be fine for this game.

In that case I should be fine with a DS4 - although I hardly ever used the (new) d-pad for any PS4 game till now.

But it doesn't seem to support my Saturn USB pads :(

I have a pair of no name usb gamepads laying around that didn't work either. A quick search on the steam forums led me to a solution that I never even considered. Enable big picture mode, click the settings gear and select setup controller. Boom, problem solved.

I'll try this for my nes controller

The soundtrack is so great I really want this game. Is it like Megaman/Megaman X where you can choose the order of the levels? Do you get special weapons after beating bosses?
Level order is Super Mario Bros 3 style: Beat areas in one zone to access the next. There are even enemies that wander the map like Hammer Bros.

There are unique equipment, but they're hidden in the levels. Defeating bosses just lets you progress and keep all the gold you got from the level.

Shovel Knight still looks way better. More colors, real actual parallax layers, more/bigger objects on screen, no slowdown or flickering of sprites.

There are only 4 more colors in the overall palette. Individual sprites are still limited by a small number of colors. I don't think the game uses more objects or bigger objects than an average NES game either. There's a lot of deliberate authenticity to making it specifically look like a NES game as opposed to a Master System, Genesis, SNES, or TG-16 game. It looks really good, but it's also made with the intimate knowledge of the limitations of the NES and what specifically makes NES games look and sound the way they do.

I've been picking up all the upgrades in each level, but I was wondering, since Chester is at the first town as a regular seller: if you hadn't picked up the upgrades in the levels and hadn't even found the blue treasure chests, would he still sell them to you after the levels have been beaten?

I also only found out today that some fishing locations will yield music sheets. Bummer. Now I'll have to go back to old levels just to go fishing.

I'm really enjoying the game now and I'm no longer grappling with the controls, the only let down for me personally is the music. I see a lot of people loving it, but the only positive thing I can say about it is that it feels authentic and is well-made.

I've been playing this on 3DS and it is just amazing. Looks great on my XL screen and as others have said the 3D effects are top notch. I think I've beaten four of the levels and have zero complaints. To me at least, this was well worth the wait.

Been playing it on PC and looooooooooooove it. Only issue is that some Steam achievements are not activating with the feats, but whatevz. Bought each of the soundtracks for $5 apiece and will download them when I get home.

It seems like shovel/armor upgrades are not so great, many with tradeoffs. Anyone have a recommendation for the best one to go with, either in overall usefulness or simply the most fun to use?

There are no trade-offs with Shovel upgrades. Each one is just an add-on, you should just buy all 3 as soon as possible. For Armor they're mostly useless except for the Dynamo Armor. I just stick with that.

I played the first level of this game last night, and I'm already in love. Everything about it is nearly perfect. The platforming is tight, the shovel mechanics are fun, the pixel art is absurdly beautiful, and the music is fucking siiiiiiiiick (no surprise seeing as it was composed by motherfucking Virt and featuring a few tracks by Manami Matsumae).

Shovel Knight, I love you. I won't be surprised at all if this game lands very near the top of my 2014 GotY list.

Agreed with the Dynamo Armor. It seems so simple but it adds a lot of fun to the combat.

It would be cool if they add achievements for beating NG+ runs with each set of armor.

Dynamo Armor is hilariously good. There are so many things that can activate it.

But Ornate Armor is shiny.

yes, he'll sell them if you hadn't found him in the field.

Alright, thanks. I'm away from the game now and looked at armor mostly thinking "Shit, each is basically a tradeoff" and then glanced at the shovels but apparently didn't set those to my memory very well.

Time to upgrade some shovels!

Picked this up on the 3DS and I'm really impressed with it, a lot better than I thought it would be. I actually wasn't sure why I was even buying it at the time, but after playing some I'm glad I bought into the hype.

Shovel Knight reminds me of what it felt like to play NES games as a kid. Even outside of the art and music, the mechanics and tightness of the control and the level design all hearken to an era of games that indies often glamorize, but rarely truly realize. The game design cheats a bit to make the game more palatable to modern sensibilities, but it's kind of hard to get mad at the inauthenticity of reasonably spaced checkpoints, unlimited lives and auto-saving.

I originally didn't think I would play this on anything but a handheld, but now I'm debating grabbing another version so I can play for longer stretches without hand cramps. Weird question: How does this look on the WiiU gamepad? I've found that the low resolution of that screen is the closest thing I have to making old games look like they're on a CRT.

Just spent the last two hours playing the Wii U version. It is just so good. I didn't play the 3ds one but playing this on the big screen is something to behold. i felt I was 10 again.

Didn't pick it up on the 3ds or steam cause I wanted to play this on the big screen. Can't stress enough how good it looks on my 50 inch. Wii U all the way.

Wow, this game is soooo gooood. I wasn't even that excited for this until a few days ago when I saw the launch trailer which blew me away. I've beaten 4 main stages so far and everything from level design, controls and music has been top notch.

Also, the SMB3-style world map is super cool, and I was really surprised that there are
optional boss battles in there!

I bought it and sent it to install remotely. I'm at work, as soon as I get home I'm playing the shit out of this game. Is it as amazing as it looks?

I played the PC version on my TV. HDMI cables are magic!

This game would have blown my mind as a kid the way mario 3 did the first time i played. These guys must have done a ton of research just to get the feel of controlling the character and the design of the levels right.

Damn. My Spectre Knight fight was intense. He took my down to my last half sphere of health and I'd destroyed all of the checkpoints.

This game is great.

Can't put into words how much I love virt for making the NSF files freely available. Being able to watch / listen to the soundtrack in a modified Famitracker is really something.

Arranged soundtrack is wonderful. Original soundtrack is wonderful. All kinds of wonderfulness going on with this game.

my glorious fiancée bought me a bose soundlink mini bluetooth speaker for my bday

now i can chill on the roof with my retina mac, a dual shock 4, my new speakers, a beer and SHOVEL SHOVEL SHOVEL

I have only played two levels so far and loving this game!

One question. I may be blind or something but I'm not seeing how to enable the streetpass features on 3DS. Do I have to do something to enable it?

Wow, only got to the village and I'm already enamored with the characters' spritework. The game feels authentic, straight out of that era. Back to playing...

Game looks gorgeous on the 3DS, especially with the 3D. I usually turn 3D off in games but never in this one... OK maybe once because I spazzed out while fighting a boss and the screen would look blurry when I shifted my arms a little.

Two levels in (on 3DS) and just chiming in to say I really like the game. Glad I got it on 3DS as well after having trouble deciding between that, PC, and Wii U. The 3D effect isn't distracting (I usually end up turning it off) and adds a nice pop to the 2D, kind of like how Mutant Mudds handled it.

Wish the 3DS XL volume went louder though!

The lack of tutorials that explained me how to walk left and right is what sold me on the game during the first minutes of gameplay.

I'm also finding the difficulty just right so far. (5 levels done)

Matsumae's two tracks (from the water and scientist themed levels) are so god-tier, kinda wish they had her down for composing more level themes because i'm totally not feeling most of Kaufman's tracks.
