Shovel Knight |OT| The 8-bit adventures of Butt Butt Goes to Europe & Australia

You can change Relics to a separate button in the options,I had the same problem you did until I changed it.

Awesome news. I looked during my last play session, but I didn't see ability to change up + Y. I'll be sure to do this when I boot Shovel Knight up again!

Edit: I see, had to change relic to button first before going to change controls. Didn't see that beforehand. Changed it to ZR, feels great!

So I made a huge mistake, thought I bought the armor that gives you a super swing after two pogos, I actually bought the one that is 2x damage but +50 magic and enemies are more likely to drop magic. I'm liking it more then I thought fire ball spam is actually pretty damn effect

Anyone think
Tinker Knight's missiles
are a Kraid reference?
The Specter Knight Battle is more astonishing than anything I have played in Triple A this year. Strong Castlevania vibes but SK has it's own identity, I was exhilarating thanks to design and an incredible track.
Specter Knight is just the beginning. All of the Order of No Quarter boss fights after him are awesome too.

I think they kinda dropped the ball on King Knight's fight.

Yeah I think King Knight was kind of weak compared to the others. I think Plague Knight was the hardest out of the group.

Just finished this up and I loved it. Wish I had backed it... I'll probably pick up one of the shirts they have on We Love Fine.

Just beat it. Really liked the final boss but that second phase wasn't very intuitive...

Anyway, I found in that dark museum place a cypher for symbols to Latin characters... but I've never seen those symbols around? Can anyone point me to cool secrets/postgame stuff?

If you guys had to rank this among the greatest NES games where would you put it? I have not started my play through yet, but these are my top 10 NES games:

1. The Legend Of Zelda
2. Super Mario Brothers 3
3. Mega Man 2
4. Contra
5. Archon
6. DuckTales
7. Mike Tyson's Punch Out
8. Ninja Gaiden
9. Moon Crystal
10. Super Dodge Ball

I don't think it's fair to Shovel Knight to put it up against some of the most important games of all time. Shovel Knight is easily in the Top 5 modern retro throwback titles though.

your top ten and my top ten are wildly different anyhow :p

I wouldn't compare it to my favorite NES games.

I was doing this exact same exercise in my head earlier today.

If all of the best NES games had been released last Tuesday, Shovel Knight would far and away be judged as the best one. It's impossible to make 1:1 comparisons though, as Shovel Knight is benefitting from over 25 years of extra wisdom and design sensibilities that actual NES game developers could never have executed.

I'm sure this game will be more replayable than all of the games you mentioned though, save for maybe Punch-Out!! and Mario 3.

I'd consider it better than Mega Man 2 by a long shot. Better platforming and maneuvering, no Crash Bomb-only boss bullshit, no Heat Man blocks trial and error, more ways to maneuver, levels are much longer, bosses are more creative in general. It's easier than Mega Man 2 (at least on difficult how I played it), but it's still got some nice challenges in certain areas.

But I'm one of the weird people who wasn't too impressed by Mega Man 2.

Can anyone with the PC version check if it works with SweetFx?

Mona's music (Let's Play A Game?) is the best. The mini game isn't bad either.

oh god why

CRT filter dude.

Virt released the .nsf (aka the native NES music file) for this game, so I was able to get at the individual tracks of each song and make a stereo version of the soundtrack.

I made it mostly for my own music collection but I posted it to youtube if anyone wants to hear it. I personally really like how it turned out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjMhyw7aWAE

I half wonder if King Knight was meant to be ironic. You'd think a King Knight would be one of the last ones and one of the hardest, not the one you should probably fight first.

Just finished the first playthrough of the game. Took a little over 5 hours, 114 deaths or so. Amazing game. Thinking about double dipping for 3DS stereoscopy.

For those worried about difficulty, I've never beat Mega Man 2 in my life.

Hey! I saw your post on reddit! This is really great stuff bud!

At the Armor Outpost. I purchased
the charge slash
for my shovel, any opinions on the better armor,
Dynamo or Momentum
are the two I am eying up. Leaning towards
Dynamo,
but wondering if it will be redundant since I have the
charge slash
for my shovel.

Just got the game today. Beat Specter Knight and grabbed a few health and magic upgrades and did some other things in the village.

This game basically seems like a very competent take on the Mega Man formula with a coat of medieval paint. I mean that in a good way. It's a lot of fun so far. Nice difficulty balance as well; right out of the gate it's not piss easy but not overly hard. Might even be more welcoming than Mega Man 9 (for example), in this regard.

8-bit inspired bliss.

Dynamo armor
easily. It's not redundant at all and does fast damage on bosses.

Just finished. What an awesome game.

This was pretty much the ideal difficulty. None of my deaths ever felt cheap or unfair and they didn't abuse instant death gimmicks like you see in many 8-bit throwback style games. Even my most hated one, the "enemy jumps out of a pit as you attempt to jump across" was done better as all of them knock you back onto safe ground except for one or two. At the very least, the first one is safe so that you know "hey, this trap is in this area so pay attention".

So many creative mechanics introduced in each stage giving each area its own feel and style. They do what originally drew me to Mega Man's gameplay where each stage's new mechanics build on each other and become more complicated until you reach the boss who uses those mechanics even further, really delivering the feel them being the masters of that area. It gives the bosses so much personality without words and is done through the experience.

Simple controls with a simple set of actions yet they do so much and are given so much versatility. I wasn't aware of this project or the details of kickstarter until after the fact, and I really regret that now. This was an incredible effort deserving of all the praise, effort, and donations given.

If there was one, small thing, that I think could've been done better it'd be something in the ending.
The way they showed Shield Knight had survived at the end. Not that she survived; this game's way too upbeat and positive to do something as dark as kill her in the end. I was a little disappointed with how she just walks up to Shovel Knight while he was sleeping. That's so...plain.

I would've had Shovel Knight do one last "Catch Her" dream, no enemies and when we're back at the campfire in the morning, Shovel Knight wakes up with Shield Knight sleeping next to him. D'awwws all around.

Astonishing?

I liked the battle. I died multiple times because I rushed into it but the pattern is quite easy to get down. I love the animations. Definite Castlevania vibes because it felt like the Grim Reaper fights in CV games, particularly Super Castlevania IV with how he throws the scythe.

All that said I'm wondering how something like this would trounce what you'd see in AAA games. Are AAA games really that...unimpressive? I don't play many of those so-labeled titles anymore. And this is no knock against Shovel Knight either which feels high quality right out of the gate and does the Mega Man formula complete justice.

Most if not all AAA games are really repetitive these days, and don't even have boss battles.

Not to say that Specter was the best, i liked other bosses more. The music really pushes the game to a whole different level IMO.

Finished it today, gonna start NG+ soon.

What a fantastic game. I wish it was a little bit longer, but I think that is just a sign that its a great game that I never wanted to end. I really hope we get a sequel soon. Everything about this game is on point.

I do think that I felt a little over powered at one point. Once you get enough health, it becomes much easier. The first 1/4 of the game was much harder than the back end. But as it was previously stated, it is at near perfect difficulty level.

If anyone on this thread is on the fence about this game.. get off. Go buy it.

I think I'm gonna go for all the feats. The no dying one will be sort of rough, but I bet you can cheese it. Home buttoning out of the game after each level would leave your save "pure" I imagine.

What did you guys do against Plague Knight? I don't think I have the reaction time for games like this anymore.

Pretty much just bounced on his head and hoped for the best. :P

If you just buy the two chalices and get a health potion and invincibility potion, you should be fine as well. It's a pretty simple way to cheese boss fights.

His bombs have a huuuuge arc on them. You can usually just bumble up and get in a hit (or two) while it's coming down, then jump onto the bomb after it comes down to avoid the green fire split dealers. Don't bother trying to attack him when there's beakers everywhere. Use magic, either flame rod or anchors.

Pogo-ing his left or right side and just bum rushing him + anchors will do the job just fine, though. You'll take a lot of damage, but it gets the job done. I did it on 4 health, so, with upgrades I imagine it's free.

So far the only boss that's given me trouble was Mole Knight and big ghost whatever.

Anyway, is Baz the only character from another game, or are there more?

Plague Knight with no upgrades/relics is kicking my ass. He is just too mobile. Might have to take back what I said about using no relics.

Its the destructible floor that makes the battle so hard. On a flat surface or more proper arena his attacks would be much more reasonable to actually dodge.

I can NOT for the life of me decide which platform to get this game on. I have all 3 options available but I'm pretty sure I want it on either Wii U or 3DS. Got enough games on Steam and would like to spread it out a bit.

I like the idea of the messaging aspect of the Wii U version and I never take my 3DS out, I just play it at home. Any opinions on how the game looks between those two? Oh and I have a regular 3DS, not the XL, so I'd probably need to use the analog pad due to hand cramping with the dpad.

I think I'm answering my own question here...

But if thats not an option, I would go WiiU. Full screen, HD, Semi-portable.

Yeah I just read about the future multi patch not coming to 3DS so I think that makes the decision easier. Depending on if I like it, I'm sure I'll double (or possibly triple) dip for it on the rare occasion I actually take my 3DS with me somewhere.

I just realized this is compatible with the Wii classic controller. Does this mean it will work with my Club Nintendo Super Famicom classic controller? That d-pad is outstanding!

Hmm... I have one chalice (the first one probably, though I don't remember where I got it because I've been playing through most of this game drunk) -- where is the other?

I'm probably picking it up tonight on the 3DS as well. I love stereoscopic 2D games on that thing. I'm only worried about the resolution, and whether it's clean or stretched across the 3DS screen.

Looks fantastic on the 3DS screen. Pixel-perfect, scale works great on the screen, 3D effect is gorgeous. I'm sure the game looks fantastic on other systems too but there's zero visual downside to playing on 3DS.

Not to mention Miiverse/Digger's Diary/help messages system/upcoming couch multi.

One thing I really appreciated about the Digger's Diary is that people actually spoiler-tag their hints so you don't see them till you select.

The game just totally bugged out on Tinker Knight. I was fighting him and then....
after I beat the first form instead of normally falling through the floor with him to the second form the screen was stuck on the top floor, and then when it manually switched to the bottom floor
Shovel Knight was stuck in a victory animation and since he was in the corner he couldn't take any damage at all. I could access the menu but I couldn't control anything and had to turn the 3DS off. Fffffffffffffffffffffff.

Same guy as the first one. You can buy both of them from him at the start, I guess you're not expected to be able to afford both.
