There's something unsettling about this image

Guess I was part of that 98%
But still, wtf? Why would that kind of imagery exist in SMG?
Pretty sure the file name in the game's code is called "Beyond Hell Valley" too. Stuff of nightmares...

From Super Mario 64. The odd texturing on the walls, the red carpet that only leads to the frightening image of Bowser. It's some pretty freaky shit when you put into consideration that the floor is constantly moving and keeping you away from the painting (whoops referring to the endless stairs sorry :( . What do you think

it is pretty creepy, put a little fear in my heart each time I battled bowser.

There's a ghost in 3D Land, too.

Between this, LSD, and a few other exampels, I've come to the conclusion that lo-fi 3D visuals can be really useful for delivering a horror experience. It puts the player in a very nice spot on that "realism vs. familiarity" chart that gives us the uncanny valley.

I actually do remember this freaking me out as a kid. If i recall correctly at a distance its a portrait of Peach but as you get closer doesn't it transition into a picture of Bowser?

It's very unsettling. It's like you're running toward your goal, then suddenly the rug is pulled and you're left broken and hopeless.

gonna share this thead on facebook with the title:
"A gamer took screenshots of classic game. I couldn't believe what I saw in Image 1."

Woah, what the hell?
There's no way this and SMG's alien-shit is not intentional. What were they going for? It's weird how there's all this stuff and most of the time we don't even notice.

Way off topic, but it reminds me of that creepy ghost girl in Pokémon XY; mainly because it's creepy shit that you wouldn't expect to find there.

I see your Luigi's Mansion and raise you something that's in the final product

Luigi-suicide.jpg

I was about to ask what was so creepy about this image, but during my reply I realized the image is called luigi-suicide.jpg
From what I remember the shadow is supposed to look like Luigi hanging himself, although I could never quite see it. Although it is an interesting shadow bug.
If it is a bug...

That game is nightmare fuel in general. Obviously there's this and stuff like the eel and the piano, but there's also just the way the levels float in creepy voids with creepy sky textures. Who or WHAT lives/lived in that town?

Wow, seeing those skyboxes as images out of game context is really cool.
I remember Big Boo's Haunt always scaring me when I looked out of the cage, partially because of the atmosphere of the level, but also the impenetrable blackness of the forest around you. I always wondered how on earth Mario would get home if he got stuck there. It would be damn near impossible to get out. Yeesh.

Always found this guy creepy...

Actually looking back Kakariko Village is full of creepiness. Shadow Temple, graveyard, the eye of truth dungeon as a kid down the well, the Skulluta house and the split personality of the rain song guy was creepy as hell. Screw living in that town.

It loses something without the horrifying music, though:

Pure. Goddamn. Nightmare fuel. As a kid, I began suffering from reoccurring sleep paralysis juuuuust before I found this image. The "face" I kept seeing looked JUST like that. I seriously had trouble sleeping for over a year because of all this.

The kicker? The message translates into "Enjoy Infinitely, Sega Enterprises, Majin (Masato)"

Yeah, I "enjoyed" that for a long while.

Special runner up:

Seriously, what the fuck??

This one in particular kinda weirds me out. The buildings just look so eerie.

Yeah, the game's pretty low-fi, so the creepy/mysterious vibe isn't as evident as it would be in higher fidelity. I imagine an HD current gen version of Super Mario 64 would look like the CG renders from around the time of the game's release

The relative realism creates a surreal feel.

That hallway, the unending stairs, the painting for Lethal Lava Land, and that fucking piano used to be 2spooky4me.

Most people (myself included) regularly take for granted just how fucking bizzaro Nintendo's products are. Mario is ingrained into pop culture so we take it for granted, and the joke that Nintendo devs do a ton of drugs while making their games is so trite at this point... but seriously, there is no way they don't do a ton of drugs. Almost every game they make has some sort of freaky or tripped out element to it.
