Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I'm going retro...
-Toe Jam and Earl always sucked
-E-Swat was trash
-Mystic Defender was weak sauce
-Sega hasn't made a good Golden Axe since Death Adder's Revenge
- Karnov wasn't really that good
- Ring King was crap
- Ecco the Dolphin was crap
- Space Invaders was awful
- Asteroids was worse
- Centipede was never good
- Kid Icarus was lousy
- Zaxxon was overrated
- Taito's Superman arcade game was pure shit
- TMNT NES (first game) was shitty
- SMB 2 was crap
- Legend of Kage was crap
- Bubble Bobble blew
- Kickman was dumb

Honest question: Were you around in the arcades when these games were popular in the late 70's to early 80's?

No judgement, just curious.

I can see where these games look and feel primitive by modern standards, but back in the day they were pure gold. Think about your favorite "crowning achievement" titles of today, your Mario: Galaxy's, Red Dead Redemption's, BioShock's, Dark Soul's, etc.

Yeah, many of the titles you listed were 70's-80's versions of those games. The arcade ones at least.

Again, not judging your opinion. Just wondering if you were part of these game's time-capsule in history, or if they were mostly just before your time.

I agree with most of these aside from Bubble Bobble and Asteroids. I'm rather partial to Asteroids and I'm a sucker for vector graphics. It's pretty basic but I think it holds up reasonably well for a game from 1980.

I have another one. World at War was the best Call of Duty - all my friends hate me because of this haha.

I'm just a sucker for WW2.

I'd say it's the best WW2 online shooter of all time, just because it has the gameplay of COD 4.

I think my opinion on this is more controversial lol.

my responses in bold, for funsies

-Toe Jam and Earl always sucked
you are correct
-Sega hasn't made a good Golden Axe since Death Adder's Revenge
Golden Axe was never good
- Karnov wasn't really that good
Karnov is really great
- Ecco the Dolphin was crap
Both Genesis & Dreamcast Ecco games are about graphics & music/sound. It's a showpiece only
- Space Invaders was awful
whoa now
- Asteroids was worse
It's not great
- Centipede was never good
Millipede is one of the best games ever, but Centipede is low on content
- Kid Icarus was lousy
Yeah, I suppose
- TMNT NES (first game) was shitty
I thought this was gaming canon
- SMB 2 was crap
I've come around on it
- Bubble Bobble blew
It's only good once you find a significant other to enjoy it with

For action games the Genesis was better then the SNES. Had a faster processor so very little (if any slowdown) and the gameplay was fast and furious. It also helped that the Genesis just had better beat 'em ups and action platformers like Rocket Knight and Contra Hardcorps and Castlevania Bloodlines were better then their SNES counter parts (though Contra 3 comes very close).

Isn't this common knowledge though? It was accepted back in the day that the SNES was frustratingly slow and had poor ports of the best Genesis action games. And Konami/Treasure Genesis games pretty much set the standard in the 16-bit era.

Maybe now. But not so much back in the day I think.

The ports of Out Of This World aka Another World really show off the differences between the two systems.

SNES port was a little brighter and had superb music and sound effects (including new music specifically for this version) but the slowdown was brutal and frequently got you killed. Even if you know what to do, certain parts are frustrating because of slowdown.

Genesis version was a little darker and had worse music and sound effects. But no slowdown whatsoever.

Journey on PS3 was boring. As was the Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (and the others since that one). I don't see the appeal of the Saints Row games.

The Dynasty Warriors games are a series of great games. I really like Killzone on Vita.

That was cathartic.

Although I don't have much experience with Dynasty Warriors...I agree.

Also, Portal was pretty boring and Destiny deathmatch in the Alphas was bad.

I had trouble getting into it the first couple of times I tried it too, but then I went back to it a few weeks later and had suddenly lost six hours of my life and was hooked.
I'm on operation 3 or 4. I've got every power up to
white
. Is it going to get better for me? I want to like it, it's just that the little frustrating things are overwhelmingly frustrating.

Bioshock is better then System Shock 2.

System Shock 2 was good for its time but it has a very slow build up and the enemy A.I. and the hacking leaves a lot to be desired. When I can just abuse save states to hack locks there's a problem. The game just makes you feel like every point you put into your experience could be wrong and it's really hard to aim for a middle of the road build without feeling underpowered or annoyed when you need to proceed but you need a code you can't find but if you had a better Hacking XP you could get bypass it.

Bioshock streamlines the experience for the better without coddling the player too much. I don't like the Revitilzation chambers but... You have quick save/quick load, what's the difference?

Also Bioshock had the same sense of exploration and reward as oldschool FPS (one of the last FPS titles that really had this element, thought I should play Metro: Last Light).

Guns of the Patriots was an amazing game. people who hate on it are NOT real MGS fans. Especially those who complain about long cutscenes. Real MGS fans eat up every second of those long cutscenes because the MGS universe is that good. And despite all the hate. It is still the best stealth action game released last gen.

This! I loved MGS4, long cutscenes and all. My biggest worry about TPP is the lack of long cutscenes.

I don't think that many of the posters here that constantly fellate Dark Souls have either:

a) never completed the game

b) played it all

Its a really good game. But thats all. Its not the second coming, it didn't revolutionise the industry, and From Software certainly do not need to be given other IP's to 'save'.

Basically;
From Software
Platinum Games
Rocksteady

Do not have the game developer's Midas touch. E.g. people who say Rocksteady would NAIL a Spiderman game... Would they really?

That's the point. A middle-of-the-road build will end up being rubbish. Specialise soon, specialise often. It's perfectly possible to get through the game via each of the three upgrade paths.

Here's one...

I hate Mario 64. I've tried so hard to progress in this game, but I just find it almost unplayable with it's controls, which are often non-existent.

Honest question: Were you around in the arcades when these games were popular in the late 70's to early 80's?

Absolutely.

I was a huge fan of Q*Bert and Popeye! I really wish Nintendo could bring Popeye back on VC, it was imo the best of Nintendo's arcade classics.

Also loved Robotron 2084, Pac-Man, Ms Pac-Man, DK, DK Jr, Galaga, and Mappy. Those few I mentioned of that period, I just didn't like at all.
Moving further into the '80s Kung Fu Master, Rolling Thunder, Shinobi, and Ghosts n Goblins were my favorites.

I played at most 15 hours of Dark Souls because i suck at hard games but i remember clearly when Demon's Souls' first trailer was released god knows how many years ago (was it TGS 2008?) me and my brother both exclaimed that the game would become huge, it happened for its sequel but close enough.
It doesn't go against what you said but i just wanted to say it.

I have never purchased a soccer, racing or fighting game... and won't do it ever... cause if there's a demo is like having the full game.

Why will I bother paying for Fifa14 if I can play against a friend in the demo.

Because the FIFA demo is one mode, choice of 4 teams and each match is only 3 minutes long.
A racing demo is usually only 1 or 2 cars and a couple of races.

I don't know if you know but full games have a lot more content and modes than demos.

- Games by Platinum never feel like they are worth full price due to ridiculously short playtimes and very limited content for predominently single player games. Vanquish is also a completely mediocre third person shooter.

- Nintendo haven't made anything genuinely creative since Mario Galaxy 1 and their output in recent times is every bit as tired and rehashed as any of those third party publishers Nintendo fans like to decry as making nothing but tired rehashes. They're just well past their prime at this point.

- DOTA 2 is utterly mind numbing.

It makes me sick to my stomach to see some of these AAA games cost so much money. Like Destiny for example. I don't really care how good a game might be..but it should never cost so much money to make. Its just one fps game in a sea of FPS games releasing near the end of this year. Rainbow six, BF, COD, Borderlands, Halo, Evolve, and throw in Destiny on top of all the repetitive trash. Take that 500 million and instead make 10 rpg games. Or make 20 action adventure games. Or make 50 platformer games. Or even go as far as making 100 low budget titles that diversify a platforms library. But no. They decided to make one fps game. smh

1. MGS4 really was a great game. The only specific portion of the game I absolutely could not stand was Eastern Europe, but other than that, it was a hell of a ride. Especially Act 2. And that ending... I remember beating it at midnight and being up till 1:30 watching the end...

2. These budgets you are attacking are mainly due to advertising costs. Marketing is essential to AAA titles (actually, to any product in the world, really), as it exposes your game to a larger audience and translates to higher profit. I understand that these budgets are truly massive and unsettling, but this is how the industry works and it is VERY effective (when done right). Let them spend their money. It is theirs, after all...

Go play Kid Icarus.

Dear god...

I loved MGR, but you, sir, have hit the nail on the head. Seriously short games they produce. I cannot agree more.

And Vanquish really was dull and mediocre. Really don't get the hype.

Okay, sorry for posting a lot, but I do love this thread, as I have a TON of controversial opinions myself.

Here's another one I'd like to discuss:

Sleeping Dogs was eh. It featured a great story in the most dull and empty world I have ever seen in a video game and aside from fighting mechanics, the rest of the game feels so clunky and pointless.

For United Front's first game, it is a great start, but I feel like people need to seriously calm down about it. It really isn't that amazing.

But that story was fantastic, I admit...

There need to be more spiders in games.

And they need to be good guys more often.

If there's one thing I hated about Uncharted 3...

People are too obsessed with genre as a mark of quality.

I don't have an issue with the idea of ranking genres (aside from it being a daunting thing to do), but this does bug me. It tends to go hand in hand with discussions about the most poorly-defined subgenres. I can't help but roll my eyes when I see posters talking about how such and such is or is not "true survival horror" or a "real arena shooter".

Not quite as obnoxious as grouping up all games with exposed stats and calling them "RPGs", though.

I think random battles are there just to pad out the game length. I tried FF7, hit a random battle, and shut it off. I do not have time for this lol.

I want to play as the baddies, like not pure evil type of guys but the type of guys that will do anything to reach their vision. I enjoyed playing as Cao Cao in Kessen 2 and for God's sake let us play as the Helghast for once GG.

I don't think that many of the posters here that constantly fellate Dark Souls have either:

Why would these posters do this? To be perceived cool by other posters?

Also, I'm not allowed to fellate Demon/Dark Souls having played probably 50 hours in each, but not actually beating any of them?

Edit: Wait, what? From the "How long till you can rate a game?" thread

I mostly agree with the OP. I tend to balk at the notion that someone needs to play a game until completion to pass verdict on it.

The World Ends With You is a mediocre game at best.

Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance is an abomination.

Super Mario Sunshine is one of the greatest games ever made.

There's nothing wrong with tank controls.

Half-Life was a much better game than Half-Life 2.

Final Fantasy XI was terrible before Abyssea and was saved by it.

Resident Evil has an engaging storyline.

Borderlands 2 is a funny game and people need to drop the memelands shit, the game doesn't use memes that much.

There was only one meme in it that I can remember hating, but unfortunately it was used over and over and over again.

I played coop with a friend who played as Zer0, and one of his lines of dialog that he speaks CONSTANTLY is "You just activated my trap card." It was so annoying and happened so often that I never played coop again and have never even tried out Zer0 as a character on my own.

Of course then I learned the devs anticipated that this dialog would be annoying after the 10th time and there was a mute player callouts option in the settings.
