Sony Gamescom: PS4 install base exceeded 10 million units sold through globally.

You guys are right, of course. I'm just being a dumb fool and trying to save some face. I backed the wrong horse and I feel like an absolute jackass now. My friend once bet me that the PS3 would overtake the 360 after 3 years on market and I mocked the sh*t out of him after he lost that bet because he was so smug and so confident that it would happen. Karma is f****** real. I know that now. I didn't even care except to rub it in his face and in the faces of people like him. "They'll win cause they're sony and they always win". I call it the sony smugness. F**** annoying.

So after the xb1/ps4 launches, he bet me that ps4 would have a 2:1 edge at the end of 2015. I took that bet and ran. Sure, Microsoft can't f*** this sh*t up that badly, can they? They had the damn dudebro's eating out of their damn hands. Holy sh*t. I was their #1 motherf**** fan. I deserve this because I couldn't take the high road when I won that initial bet. This sh** is PS2 vs. XB all over again damn. 125mil + to probably 38 mil if they're lucky. They're gonna 3:1 these asses. Now he's gonna have that sh** grin wide as the f***** mississippi when I see him in a couple months.

Sure they could maybe pull a "kinect" out of their asses again to make it more respectable but that's a long shot at best. These guys. These f******* guys. DRM. Shit hardware. F***** the indies early and often. Being cheap as f***** where it counted. Spending assloads of benjamins on NFL and other TV sh** no one gives two sh** about. $499 and mandatory kinect? Are you sh***** me? Where's the hidden cameras? Input One? How about Input None you epic friggin' fools. Now they're trying to play catch up like a fat man tryin' to catch a runaway dog. Lassie's long gone home muthaf****.

Sony's got you beat in every facet that matters: games, price, power, brand, mindshare, etc, etc. et muthaf**** c. You did this. You deserve all of this. You could have paid someone to come up with the worst possible way to launch a follow up console to the 360 and he wouldn't be able to come up with half the f*** up sh** they ended up with. Holy sh**. Unbelievable. I'm done.
Ohhhhhh I didn't know we have misterx's followers here... nice to know ;)

Shipped may be, most likely we will never know how much Sony shipped to get to 10M sold through. Still when I look at that amazingly straight supply constrained 2007 Wii line above, I just do not see it for PS4. I'll stick to 19M tops. :)

Honestly, it's just a curiosity, because it's not going to keep up with the Wii for much longer. I just thought it was an interesting comparison.

Am i readinng this right? People are saying that the PS4 is going to double its lifetime sales in the next 4 months?

Well, that's not what I'm saying, anyway. Not sure about anyone else. I'm saying they could well hit 20M shipped by December 31. They were most likely at 9 or 10M shipped by June 30. In the second half of the year, the PS3 sold the following:

2007 - 6.2M
2008 - 6.9M
2009 - 9.7M
2010 - 9.8M
2011 - 10.2M

So 10-11M for the second half wouldn't be especially noteworthy.

I believe PS4 will hit a little over 19 million this year... holiday sales will be massive.

And yes... 60% of the year sales come from last quarter... Oct-Dec.

And in the long gone yesteryear
Don Mattrick's words made Redmond cheer
"Ten million first shall win this race!"
He said, with grin upon his face.

"The coming battle shall be won right here,
With games like Halo and Forza and Gears."
He ended his statement with a triumphant nod
Secure in his love from the gaming gods

His words stoked fires among the fans
Each camp clenched swords in bloodied hands
The system warz began again
Three noble fighters, each sure to win

Microsoft, of course, had their white box
Sleek, and powerful, and filled with lots
Of games to play with friends new and old
Or even watch Netflix (if you paid for Gold)

The box upon which SCE was betting
Had power, confusion, and printer settings
The games would look and run so swell
If developers could handle the goddamn Cell

And in the third corner of the ring
Stood the tiny offering from the former king
An innovative waggle-box called the Wii
Would eventually win, quite handily

But fear not brave warriors! War is not through!
Nintendo returned with the shiny WiiU!
It's a console! It's a tablet! It's both things combined!
It's the word "underwhelming," redefined

The other two fighters each had a son
The 360 gave birth to the Xbox One
Underpowered, TV-focused, and chained to Kinect
It struggles to gain traction, or even respect

PS3's new child has shot up the charts
Sleek and powerful, with a gaming heart
It seems quite destined to stay far ahead
Unless Sony acts like Sony and shits in the bed

But now that Gamescom '14 is here at long last
Words did echo from deep in the past
"The first to 10 million shall win at all cost!"
Hung from Microsoft's neck like a stone albatross

So now Tokyo laughs as Redmond sneers
And Lara Croft's eyes well up with tears
For bad news has arrived for the mighty Xbone
PS4 was the first to reach Don's milestone

Damn! Fixed :)

I'm quoting this because it would be a damn shame if people who only read the last page of a thread missed this poetry.

Well, it has been out a year longer and has been released in Japan (where it has tangible demand).

Curiously though isn't the Wii U selling more now than it was this time last year?

Several months back I thought the system was dying a slow and painful death but it's picked up a bit to slot in between PS4 and xBone.

Wii U is in its second year on the market not counting 2012 holidays, I'm fairly sure that's generally when console sales start to increase not to mention that its biggest game just released with MK8 and is due its second biggest game in the holiday season. It appears to be following gamecube like trends just to a lesser numerical extent

Yeah makes sense. I wouldn't like to see it die anyhow.

2 million people apparently.

No need to be wise ;)

Just saying that if even a few hundred people returned 1 or 2 consoles, that doesnt get accounted for, just goes towards numbers sold. So in truth it's not an accurate number, right? Unless I'm wrong. I mean 10 mil is still high, even if its 9.5 props, but I just don't like number touting when there's issues with your hardware, that are defective and break, and returns, refurbs, etc, don't get added in.

I doubt the X1 is at 5 million sold through world wide.

MS told us that they sold to customers 3m X1 consoles by year end 2013. We know from NPD that the X1 has sold 1.1 million consoles in the USA through the end of June for the 2014. For the console to be at 5 million, it would mean that non USA sales are at 900,000 for the same time period MS sold 1.1M in America.

How likely do you think that international sales are around 45/55 to US sales for X1?

Very likely. In fact US accounts for around 60% of Xbox One's LTD. I think by now they are either really close or at 5 million. But I don't see this turning around at any point.

Except for some launch consoles i have not seen a wide spread console failure since.

Well, they said 10M+ as of the 10th. Figure another three weeks in August would give them another 500k, assuming a bit less than 750k total for August. So ~10.5M by the end of the month.

Figure 1M in September for the Destiny launch, and another 1M in October would bring us to 12.5M.

Sales seem to double in November and again in December, giving us 2M and 4M respectively. That would be 7M units in the holiday quarter, and as a quick sanity check, the PS3 did 6.5M in 2012 IIRC, so 7M for PS4 seems reasonable enough.

That gives us ~18.5M LTD through 2014. 20M seems like a stretch unless the US and UK throw in heavily with PS4 this holiday. We'll probably have a better sense of that after the Destiny launch; a heavy slant towards PS4 in September could snowball as others make their purchasing decision for the holidays.

Exactly, I'd wager the NA market represents at least 65%, maybe more of their sales. There's no way they've even hit 5. 4.8ish is more likly.

2008 - 6.9M

So 10-11M for the second half wouldn't be especially noteworthy.

I back away from being too bullish because PS4 supply has been better in the first year than any prior console generation and by 2007, there had already been a PS3 price drop if I remember right. I'm genuinely curious to see how sales do this holiday - how many people are buying for the holiday and how many finally have their killer app to justify the purchase.

No way thats true

What are 2014 XB1 hardware sales in European territories?

1.1 million currently in USA 2014

Canada?

Germany?

UK?

France?

I figure 4.6-4.8 million world wide is where XB1 is currently at.

Returned 4

1. Disc Drive not responsive
2. HDD SHat the bed
3. Power Wouldnt power on
4. Loud Fan clicking noise.

5. Pray to god it keeps working.

You're either horribly unlucky or doing something very, very wrong with your consoles.

Regardless, what was the failure rate Sony claimed back at launch when everyone was worried about it? IIRC it was less than 1%

Very believeable with that avatar. You´re either one very unlucky person or just full of ish.

hmm.... gameongreggy@PRmax.com.

I don't think breakage is much of an issues since replacements don't count as sold through and often only account for 1%-3% of total units shipped. It's silly to think it would have a significant impact on the numbers. It'd be silly if MS counted 360 RROD refurbs as part of their units sold through.

A few hundred returns out of 10 million is statistically insignificant. Besides, all electronics have a certain failure rate. I am sure there are thousands that failed out of 10 million units, but it doesn't indicate a widesdpread problem.

To be fair, warranty repairs tend to be refurbs and if he lives in a remote place where shipping damages stuff it may be true. Refurbs may be certified to work but if the shipping is far and bumpy it might be a factor. Still unlikely to have 4 such incidents.

I disagree with the idea that Playstation 4 has no worth while games. It has had them since launch. Multiplatform games count as part of the catalog. I don't think people are buying this thing out of desperation for a new console.

All the big titles are cross platform titles. Destiny, COD, Crew, Madden, FIFA. PS4 needs its own titles that define what the platform is.

(I am sure people have a big list of titles that they fondly remember)
PS1: FF, GT, Twisted Metal
PS2: FF10, FF11, GT3, God of War, Syphon Filter, Burnout
OG Xbox: Halo
360: Gears1 <- That one title had more impact on the console and helped it propel. Mass Effect, Bioshock 1, Halo 3
PS3: Uncharted, Infamous, Resistance

PS4/Xbone: What is the title that comes to our mind first ? or some thing we say wow.. PS4/Xbone did some thing that we have never seen before... Most of the titles are filler ones. Even in PS2/PS1 era, consoles had 1000s of games and we remember 10-15 of them. Those stand out titles is what PS4 is missing and hasnt been announced yet.

Destiny, COD going from 720p on PS3 to 1080p on PS4 is not a defining moment.

Except returns don't get counted towards sales, if you return a system and swap it for another system it counts as 1 sale overall. If you just straight up return that system it gets put back into the retailer chain (if unopened) to be sold again, when it's sold it still only counts as 1 total sale not 2.

Have you not seen the massive amounts of games coming to PS4 and not X1? Not to mention all the exclusives Sony's studios are working on, many of them new IPs. The tent pole franchises (GT,GOW,UC etc) will all come in due time unless you believe all of Sony's studios are sitting around doing nothing .

Destiny will sell more PS4s than almost any exclusive could, that should put things in perspective for you

I don't believe you, especially with that avatar.
That said, returns don't count as sales on NPD.

I still find it unlikely that Destiny will be a major system seller. Then again, I don't see the draw of FPS on consoles, and am in a minority.

Will you associate Destiny with PS4. Like Halo for OG Xbox or GT3 for PS2, MGS for PS1 ?..

Destiny is a great game. It is like Medal of Honor on PS2. It is not a console defining moment.

I am not arguing PS4/Xbone are useless. I am just explaining the reason behind "PS4/Xbone doesnt have games" argument. When people say that there is no games, they are talking about game that you will identify the console with for ever. A eye opener.. not a sequal, not a port, not cross platform game.

Sold through means sold to the final customer. Those 5 consoles you went through were covered by warranty, yes? So they weren't sold to the customer. And the failure rate of the PS4, Xbox One or the Wii U are not reported to be outside the expected percentage in consumer electronics devices.
