Sony Gamescom: PS4 install base exceeded 10 million units sold through globally.

It baffles me that people can't understand PS4s are being bought to play stuff like Assassins Creed and not Knack.

Yeah, and Sony is very much aware of this. 3rd parties have always been what sold Playstations.

Its just that last gen they were forced to strengthen their first party. Now they pretty much have the best of both worlds.

And if u see how Titanfall, Mario, etc didn't do much for the competitors sales, it's definitely not just exclusives that sell systems....it's a combination of factors: price, hardware, word of mouth, marketing, 3rd parties, etc. Sony hit all those right notes, the total package, and the results show it. The competitors have a sever deficit in some of those key areas and it's hurting them.

So as a rough estimate we can say:

XB1 ~5m sold through
PS4 >10m sold through

2013:

XB1 3m sold through
PS4 4.2 sold through

2014:

XB1 ~2m sold through
PS4 ~6m sold through

PS4 is outselling XB1 roughly 3:1 WW this year... That's gotta be a bad read over at MS HQ.

I doubt the X1 is at 5 million sold through world wide.

MS told us that they sold to customers 3m X1 consoles by year end 2013. We know from NPD that the X1 has sold 1.1 million consoles in the USA through the end of June for the 2014. For the console to be at 5 million, it would mean that non USA sales are at 900,000 for the same time period MS sold 1.1M in America.

How likely do you think that international sales are around 45/55 to US sales for X1?

Sheesh I haven't seen it calculated as such, really puts it into perspective.

Whhhaaaaaaat, sony have nearly always had the better first party output, taking nintendo out of if for a moment theyve always been stronger than ms for example. Ps1 ps2 had insane first party output in there lifetimes.

So finally the updated launch-aligned graph:

Wii and PS4 streams are finally crossed, as expected. They are unexpectedly close though. Considering shipped vs sold thing PS4 sold now the same amount as the Wii at the same point in time. But the difference will grow in the next few month a bit, it is very unlikely that PS4 will reach 20 millions at the end of the year. Basically it will go between PS2 and Wii curves for awhile and will cross PS2 line somewhere in the next summer/fall.

Xbox One will most likely sell as much as the Xbox360 and PS3 after next Christmas. It had better start than its predecessors, but slowed down significantly. Its still in quite healthy region in total, and I'm sure MS will do everything to shift more units this holiday season.

It's from a Sony sales boast presentation during some conference back in the early PS2 days, when it was trouncing the Xbox and GCN. Quite the contrast to their more humble external approach this time around.

Wow. That's flat-out the cockiest thing I've ever seen from one of the big three. They absolutely needed the drubbing they took in the early PS3 days.

But not all that far off surely?

Lets say PS4 does 3.5m more in the US this year. Is that a stretch? Maybe a high end figure. Say 800k for Aug-Oct (inc. expected bump in Sept for Destiny and healthy in Oct) and then 2.5m in Nov-Dec (too high this year?). Meaning the PS4 would certainly equal that in the rest of the world which is 17m with a little extra more thanks to its sku-ing better WW.

So possibly 18m by years end? vs maybe 10m Xbox Ones?

PS4 has no games is basically a creatively bankrupt notion carried over from early PS3 era fanboy wars.

It's basically people being haters but putting no effort into their hate so they rehash jokes that have no basis in reality anymore.

Yea, 17-18M for PS4 and 9 to 10M X1 would be my guess today. 20M only if Sony will manage to reanimate Japanese sales
by releasing FF15 and TLG this year. :p

17 million would mean your average PS3 holiday season for PS4. It's going to hit 20 million or at least close.

I think a projection of 9 or 10 million Xbox One sales by year's end is extremely generous. I doubt they're going to essentially double their LTD numbers this quarter.

I don't think PS4 can reach 18m, maybe 17m at tops imo.

And no way Xbone gets near 10m, I don't think it has even hit 5m yet.

Well, both PS3 and X360 managed such feat during their second holidays (look at the graphic above), so X1 should be able to do it as well, imo. We'll see :)

I honestly think XBO sales are closer to 4.6 million sold-to-customers (as in, just shy of 4.6).

So that's basically about 2 million sold...worldwide....in a bit more than 6 months. At that rate (not counting holiday boons), the system will be lucky to get to OG Xbox numbers...maybe even GC numbers, by 2020. That is insane!

No wonder MS are worried, they need to be. They need to get competitive and fast.

Pretty much.

20M shipped by the end of the year is quite possible. PS3 routinely shipped about 10 million in the second half of the year. Of course, we would need Sony to stop shitting up their earnings reports to know for sure, and they aren't likely to do that. But it's certainly not an outlandish number.

I disagree with the idea that Playstation 4 has no worth while games. It has had them since launch. Multiplatform games count as part of the catalog. I don't think people are buying this thing out of desperation for a new console.

Only message board dwellers on GAF think that way. As usual they are the extreme minority that doesn't matter.

Shipped may be, most likely we will never know how much Sony shipped to get to 10M sold through. Still when I look at that amazingly straight supply constrained 2007 Wii line above, I just do not see it for PS4. I'll stick to 19M tops. :)

I need an updated version of the fanboy sales trend chart with the fanboy wearing some kids birthday party hat! That's the only way I can make sense of any of this!

But lets for argument sakes, say they are at 5m now (which in truth isn't going to be far off if not), 5-600k in the US between now and Oct. 2m over Nov-Dec, so ~2.5m, then 1.5m WW based off sku-ing less WW. So maybe 9+m

Still I think PS4 could be 8 million ahead by the end of the year either way.

Just a little prediction.

Yup. As much talk as there is about exclusives, power advantage, etc, the fact is that at this point a lot of people out there are just buying a PS4 because they want a new system and all their friends have one. The good word of mouth and growing install base is almost enough to sell the system alone at this point - the games are just helping that.

Am i readinng this right? People are saying that the PS4 is going to double its lifetime sales in the next 4 months?

Consoles sell A LOT more near holiday season than during spring/summer. I don't think it'll exactly double, but 15-17m is reasonable.

For reference, look at the PS3, 360 and Wii U lines in the chart posted above.

no one actually thinks this.. what you instead see are defensive xbone owners/buyers insisting "I bought an xbone because it has more of the games I want to play." Mind you I don't think that there aren't people that genuinely feel that way. But the ones who claim it non-stop are definitely and intentionally trying to make a statement of allegiance.

some don't want to believe it, but the fact is that whatever "war" there is to "win", Sony already "won" it. It is the defacto console this gen. Plain and simple. Which goes to exactly what you are saying. "I want a new console" for the majority will mean a PS4 simply because that's the console "everyone else" has. I think most are pretty shocked that this line in the sand was basically drawn like 3 months into the generation, myself included. And undoubtedly a lot of that has to do with MS' reveal (definitely much more so than actual power differences and such). I guess it just goes to show the power of the early adopter when it comes to mind share.

I think that's a bit extreme. I love my PS4 and find it shocking when people say there's barely any games on it that appeal to them, but I also don't think it's impossible for some to simply prefer Dead Rising, Forza, Halo, etc to what Sony offers.

Its not that unfeasible. The damn thing hasn't even been out a year yet. Sony will more than likely have a ton of supply for this year. It does seem like a lofty goal, but not an insurmountable one.

Destiny, GTA5, and Driveclub are all going to move sytems. Then there is LBP and the yearly rehash of everything else on top of it. Then there is the Order and Bloodborne just after Xmas. With some good marketing, it could happen.

The lead the PS4 has now is nothing compared to the whoopin' the PS2 was putting on the Xbox and GCN at that time, to be fair.

absolutely. but those people usually don't go saying this in threads (and/or every thread). they are typically TRULY content and don't have a reason/need to "back it up"

While certainly entirely true, it's interesting to note that PS2 released something like 18 months prior to the OG Xbox or Gamecube whereas this generation the Wii U released something like 12 months prior to the PS4 and the XB1 released at the same time near enough

It's amazing how the Wii U has turned a year headstart into nothing basically
