Eh, it's obvious that the iPhone 6 is behind many Android phones in regards to hardware, but I think it's been years since Apple/iOS fans have bought phones on that basis. Heck, I doubt many Android users are buying phone solely on that basis. It's all about experience these days. Either the phone gives you the overall experience that you're looking for or you look for something else.

I own an Android and IOS phone. Apple are simply behind.

I don't really know what being behind in specs means for phones anymore.

For some things it's obvious like camera and battery but for daily app use why is a spec war relevant? Going to open Instagram 0.4 seconds faster?

Though with tab refreshing I guess RAM matters unless iOS 8 improves that.

I'm interested in iPhone and currently have an android.

Same here.

I still don't know what kind of comparison people are looking for. Battery life? That will be listed in hours in any proper review.

Sol..

I am Wayne Brady.
Why would you want to compare it to another platform? Who reading an iPhone review would want to read about the latest and greatest from Android or Windows when they do not care about those platforms?

I'm not sure why one would read a review if they don't care about how it compares to other products on the market. Clearly you are going to buy it anyway. I guess you don't care about validation either. So what's left that you can't read from the specs?

What? I imagine most people care about the differences in performance user experience between the 6 and the 6 Plus, as well as compared to the iPhone 5S, to see just how large an upgrade it is.

Also, real world impressions of using the device are always helpful.

I'm no Android stan but I can't believe after all these years of hating Apple products (due to iTunes) I'm actually considering the iPhone 6 >_<

I was all set on the HTC One but found out the camera was trash yet Apple's new phone has a great camera! So conflicted...

Where do people without purses find room for phablets? Damn, y'all got some big pockets or something.

I want all the bells and whistles of the Plus, but just couldn't accommodate such a large device in my daily walking-around-and-working life. The regular 6 is the upper end of my size preference.

I love how compact but decently-sized the 5/5S are.

The improved battery life sounds nice on the 6 Plus….but the added weight does not. Fuck that.

Here is the gist of the comparison which is typical for iPhones and Androids.

Android is built for multiple specs and thus the performance is not optimal as it is not primed for a hardware. Sort of like Windows and OS X.

You can build a windows PC with a core i7 medium range, 8 gb memory and an SSD and the performance for that will be equivalent to a OS X on a i5 with 4 gb memory and an SSD.

The Software layer for an iPhone is tied directly to the hardware layer, you cannot separate the two. You can however separate an Android OS from a Phone because it is not tied to the hardware. This is probably also the reason the hardware and software side of the iPhone came lets you take better pictures than HTC's or Samsungs or LGs despite having better 'SPECS' than the iPhones.

If you are going to compare Mhz and Ghz then Android hardware will win but if you tie both Android OS and Android Phone together and measure the App performance, then we can do a real comparison of which Phone performs better at running Apps which is the major reason people buy smartphones over dumb phones.

Do you wear skinny jeans or something?

I find the 5" Xperia Z1s fits in my pockets just fine, and the iPhone 6 Plus is not much larger (it's actually thinner).

Are American pockets smaller than the UK or something? Seems odd as even my business dress work trousers would fit a 6 Plus easily along with a pack of smokes.

i find people arguing about phones to be more more ridiculous than arguing about consoles. who honestly gets invested enough to ever want to discuss/argue which one is better

Yes they are much smaller. We also clap at the end of each phone call.

Arguing about phone specs is exactly what happened to desktop PC's a decade plus ago and look at how often that conversation comes up today. It's pretty amazing how perfectly the development of smartphones over the past decade have reflected what happened to desktop PC's.

No skinny jeans here (gross), and the phone would definitely 'fit' into the pocket, but it'd be such a …..presence. If you know what I mean.

It'd just be such a big thing to have in your pockets, you know what I mean? I sometimes get annoyed by the weight of my 5S and wallet. I can't imagine having something DS-sized or larger added in there.

but but but life is all about winning!

Facebook = showboat game who gets the most likes and approval from friends for actions
purchases = who gets the most sales numbers is the winner.

People want to be with winners, not losers.

Win win win!

Oh, I can see where you're coming from. It can be a bit cumbersome if you're moving around a lot. I'm rarely on the go so much that I am walking around with both my phone and wallet in my pocket for long periods of time, so it doesn't bother me a whole lot personally.

Bingo. Run the android OS three times as fast and I still won't like it.

Specs haven't mattered in ages for phones.

Android comparisons are a bit silly to demand. Android phones are in an arms race right now to achieve bullet point specs. I love Android phones, but I could not care less if the resolution is above 1080p or that you have some obscene processor or other crazy bullet point. All I think in my mind with that stuff is how hot does the phone get and what's the battery life?

So to me it is not as important to compare specs anymore, because I feel phones have hit a plateau. If the iPhone 6 runs its OS and software fast and snappy and has a long battery life is what's under the hood as important?

I'm willing to bet that people would love the shit out of the Xperia Z3 Compact if Sony was able to bring it to all carriers and they spent at least half of what Samsung spends on advertising.

The phone has literally everything and performs well on a near stock version of android.

I don't get how pictures look better on the Plus according to that reviewer since the 6 has a better contrast ratio! I know contrast ratio specs aren't standardized, but when Apple's docs say the 6 has a higher contrast than the Plus, then I believe that has some weight to it.

Not even relatively the same thing. You can't compare a console to a phone. I'm on my phone almost all day writing emails, texting co-workers and family, and surfing the web. It definitely makes a difference which one is better.

If I were to go back to Apple, can I dump my huge music library onto it nowadays (like with my Note 2) without having to be formated for iTunes? Like just get around iTunes entirely. I'd sooner install a VIRUS on my PC than allow that program near it again!

yeah, just really didnt like them only reason i had them was because i would be gone for 30+ hours at a time and sometimes i would forget or not have a place to charge my phone. But now i have a desk job so it really doesn't matter =).

*takes notes*

So you'd recommend the 6 vs the 6+? I'll definitely take that into consideration. I haven't seen too many ownership experience thoughts from those with 5"+ phones to date.

I had the same question, chalked it up to big screens = better looking effect.
Idk. Again, relative to everything else it still seems huge, but I mean if you can handle the size anythingt probably does look nice on the screen.

You can and you can't. If you want to play your music in the default Music app, then you gotta go through iTunes. It sucks, but that's how it is currently.

If you are fine with dumping it in the Amazon cloud or whatever and playing it through their app, then you can do that.

Ding ding ding. It's amazing that some people don't see it. Android is the new Windows, OEM's are going to get fucked long term because these phones are becoming commodities and there isn't enough to differentiate them, cheap China made phones are getting really good and are far cheaper than the high end Samsung phones (Samsung is already feeling the hurt in overseas markets). This puts price pressure on the high end Androids and will cause margins for Android OEM's to erode more and more over time. Apple is insulated from this due to brand, exclusive ownership of iOS, strong ecosystem, etc. Apple will sell far less phones than the entire Android ecosystem but they will maintain their margins due to owning the premium segment, just like they do with PCs and Tablets.

Android is a race to the bottom with only Google winning as they will have a lot of eyeballs and fingers using Google services. Just like MS was the ultimate winner from the Windows monopoly, OEM's eventually got fucked cause they couldn't differentiate their products from the cheap clones enough to turn a good profit. Race to the bottom, that's the Android ecosystem in a nutshell.

The big difference is that with PC's Apple's small marketshare wasn't that big in terms of volumes. With phones, their smaller marketshare is hundreds of millions of devices a year with lush margins. Apple has always run their business as 1) owning the whole widget and building a premium, exclusive experience and 2) prioritizing margins over marketshare. They would love to have both but they will never engage on the race to the bottom with low priced hardware, it's a suckers game. Better to fight for the high end and keep margins high.

You could say that Android is winning, but it's really that Google is winning. Android OEM's stay losing, Samsung was the only one that was able to make decent profits from this sector over many years but that isn't going to last, there's only so many ways to skin Android and make yourself stand out. The competition is fierce, especially with China and it's good enough handsets at less than half the price of other Android premium handsets. The Android hardware ecosystem is headed for cheap commodity hardware with slim single digit margins for all of its OEMs, just like with the Windows hardware ecosystem.

A lot of the specs that people fight over (ie whether one insanely high ppi is better than another insanely high ppi) remind me of the camera wars over megapixels a few years back. It was a marketing function that served no appreciable increase in experience for the user.

If all of your music is uploaded to Google Play, then you can use the app. Or do you mean put them on the hard drive?

The review is wrong when it says that this is the first time the screen tilts with the gyro sensor on an iPhone. It does on my 4S with iOS7... It's just that the screen is so small and it's barely noticeable.
