Which horror game did you pick up in October? Alien Isolation or The Evil Within?

The Evil Within isn't horror. It's Survival Action.

The moment you give yourself some form of significant defense in a survival horror title is the moment where your game takes the horror out. What's the point of being frightened when you have a gun.

In survival horror you're supposed to be defenseless. Anything and everything can kill you with ease. There is no /fighting back./

So, I'm buying Isolation. Because it's Survival Horror. And it's a /good/ Alien game. When was the last time we got one of those?

You're mixing up your genres. Survival horror gives you a way to fight back, and is to some degree action oriented. Pure horror games are the ones where you can't really fight back (like Amnesia for example). Oh, and from what I heard, A:I gives you a shit load of ways to fight back as you get deep into the game.

Evil within is still horror, just because you get weapons doesnt mean its not horror

Nah, sorry. There's nothing frightening about carrying a shotgun and blowing away enemies.

So Fatal Frame isnt horror?

Nope, Survival Action.

I've always referred to titles like Clock Tower and Haunting Ground to 'Survival Horror', and stuff like RE and Silent Hill to 'Survival Action.'

Thanks for spoiling Alien for me, too.

You not being scared does not mean it's not a horror title. Same shit with horror movies.

This game has horror elements in spades (read: a fuck-ton), from what I've seen so far.

I actually made myself only pick one so I could get in control of the back log I know I'm going to have, I picked alien and have no regrets so far, the atmosphere of the game is great.

Even though both are single player titles that would not have suffered from me waiting on one or the other, I bought both. Because I have no self control. Fuck.

This game has horror in spades, from what I've seen so far.

The menacing sensation of being stalked, hunted by unknown forces is essentially gone once you realize that you can fend these forces away with a careful aim imo. It takes away too much from the game's direction in terms of story and setting.

So I assume Call of Cthulhu is a survival action short story then because he gets knocked out by a motorboat.

Had to get both. Alien Isolation is great, I'm about 4 heart attacks into it. Hopefully Evil Within delivers, I appreciate a variety of things trying to kill me.

Will be picking up the Evil Within. Isolation looks interesting but I'm not really a fan of the Alien IP and the game's praise isn't enough to make me want to purchase it.

Alien for $26 (via BST)and Evil Within for $37 GMG so both for ($63) . So literally got them both on PC for the LESS THAN price of one (with tax) on console (@$66). <3 PC.

Sorry about that, but maybe I wouldn't have had to if you hadn't tried to insist your views about horror sub-genres as truth when they have been previously defined for a long while now.

Seriously though, I thought it was well known for months and months that Alien has a lot of combat in it.

Normally, I would have bought both without hesitation. However, this year I decided to hit the horror backlog instead.

I will buy and play both eventually though.

The Evil Within. I was going to pick up both, but then I read about the Android shit in Alien: Isolation and
the Alien going away
and you just getting stupidly powerful and I was like Noooooooooooooope.

Both here. Alien Isolation has really impressed me so far (VR! HOLY COW!) and The Evil Within is Shinji Mikami.

So yeah, it's a fantastic time to be a horror gaming fan.

Been playing Alien all week. Honestly it's fucking horrifying. I've gotten to chapter 7 on hard and I have to play in short bursts cause it's too intense. LOVE IT.

Gonna get TEW next Friday, and while I'm sure it'll be great, I don't see it being scarier than Alien. Can't wait!

I went on a media blackout for A: Isolation. Mostly because I was anticipating the game. Only really looked at the review numbers.

I hope you don't think I'm forcing my idea of what horror is down others' throats, because that's quite the contrary. But, TEW--like RE4-- is something I cannot willingly call horror.

I disagree. You can walk around with the beam sword from Halo, with infinite ammo, and this game would still be horror due to it's setting and story, and ton of horror movie elements and references. You can blend genres, the same way the films do.

Isn't CoC meant to be science fiction?

Lovecraft = horror bruh. Even if it was Sci-Fi, Alien is Sci-fi...and also horror.

Haven't picked up either, but I'm interested in A:I now that it's out and is getting lots of praise. Will have to wait for it to be sub-$20, though.

While mostly clear winners, I'm impressed by how many of the games sitting in that pile would be worthy of the description of "One of the worst games of last generation".

Alone in the Dark is as terrible as The Last of Us is great.

I will play both eventually. Skipped Alien:I for now, and I'm leaning that way with EW too. So much to buy in Oct and Nov but might splurge if it reviews exceptionally well.

I really do apologize for that spoiler :/. I've been on blackout for TEW but have had many things spoiled just by coming in threads about it. It really sucks, but it's the risk we run going on gaming forums, and especially going into threads concerning said game. I agree RE4 is probably not a horror game, but it sure as hell is closer to horror than something like TLOU, but a lot of people throw around horror when describing it.

But also, you haven't played TEW, so you can't really say whether or not it's a horror game right?

I keep a solid 50/50 split, lol

The real surprise is when I expect a complete turd of a game, and it ends up not being nearly as bad as others have made it out to be. Neverdead fits that description well. It's surprisingly fun. The Dead Island games have 10x more jank than Neverdead.

Alone in the Dark is not good at all so far (about an hour into it maybe?) and I had to force myself to get past the very first room of Alien: Colonial Marines. I'm praying that gets better before it's all said and done. Splatterhouse's visuals remaind me of a good looking PS2 game and controls like fucking garbage but I still made it to the 3rd level somehow.

Out of that pile, I already beat Dead Space 2 and am almost finished with Dead Island: Riptide. Both are fun games and I have not regretted my time with them at all. I'm almost done with House of the Dead: Overkill too. We play that in 3D on the 70" with PS Sharpshooters. It's better than an arcade!

I know, I know, I need to get to those A+++ games, but I really enjoy B and C tier games too. I have a couple D's in there for sure, lol.

I didn't like Alien sit and duck gameplay videos, so I preordered only The Evil Within, because of a little game called RE4 and after watching people finally playing TEW online I have no regrets. Will get Alien someday.

might wait for a sale on Alien, but Evil Within is looking so far so good on a full price pickup.

I bought Alien: Isolation mostly because of the great price I was able to get it for from the Buy/Sell/Trade thread. Haven't started playing it yet. I'll probably get The Evil Within also but not until I've played through Alien.

I'm kind of wondering why there is a PS+ discount for TEW right now. I have Isolation and plan to get TEW. But I have never seen that before. Hopefully it's not suckage.
