Dragon Age: Inquisition Review Thread

how accessible are games like this? I'm incredibly curious about it, but I don't have tons of time to sink into something without it giving something back - I'm happy to get lost in a game if it is worth it, I did that with Dark Souls. But it has to be pretty special

Also something I can see playing on PS4 rather than PC, as just wandering around is something I can do in the evening while my wife is reading etc - I don't need to be locked away.

Just focus on the story and mostly ignore sidequests and crafting and you should be fine.

Out of curiosity, does the game have an encyclopedia like system that adds bits of lore as you discover areas / meet people etc? I have no idea if any of the reviews mention that. It's a common Bioware thing, but it's yet to be confirmed / discussed.

Same.
I will wait a while before buying.
Especially, I had concerns about the weak, dumbed down combat, the consolized controls and interface, the story and the characters. From the reviews they don't look that good.

Also... did anyone really expected low scores? Seriously guys?

I didn't read anything yet about the companions if they were interesting or not or about any cameos.

Even though I played both Origins and 2, I still didn't care about Inquisition at all. But the last couple of weeks turned it around. Probably the last AAA title I'll be getting this year.

Yes, it has a codex system

Sarcasm or ? :P

It's because of this:

I automatically thought of them as part of the "story" issue (also, didn't really liked them from the presentation, apart from Iron Bull and, well, Varric. Even DA2 ones were less bland).

I take the critical praise with a grain of salt. With Bioware, we have been burned in the past.

Especially since a lot of the reviews seem to work their way back to a handful of issues, that I feel like could be deal breakers for some people.

The one review so far that I personally put a little more stock in would be Eurogamer's review, only because its written by Richard Cobbett, who didn't care much for DA2 and enjoyed Origins. He wrote some at RPS and Eurogamer about that, so his criticisms of Inquisition seem like they'd be in line with my concerns for the game.

Seems like many of the negatives in some of the reviews are things I've been worried about for a while:

  1. Story is a rehash of Origins just on a bigger scale- Chosen One, Save the World from Ancient Evil.
  2. Taking design queues from AssCreed in terms of junk filler collectable quests, even if they tie into the Power mechanic
  3. Lack of big city areas- The PC Gamer review mentions Val Royeaux, supposedly one of the biggest cities in the DA world, is limited to a marketplace and there are no areas like Denerim or Athkatla from BG2
  4. The PC menus are rubbish
  5. The tactical camera is not as versatile as the Origins tactical camera. The Eurogamer and RPGFan review mention how the Tactical Camera frequently gets stuck on objects in the environment and in areas with low ceilings. Which means its very much not like the Origins tactical camera which had the ability to break from the geometry to give you an open view on things, regardless of whether you were in an open area or an indoor location.
  6. The Tactics menu (that they've been reluctant to show in any streams) has been severely gimped and dumbed down.
  7. Various technical glitches unrelated to bad firmware- characters glitching through geometry, dialogue options disappearing

Seems like its a much better game than DA2 (low bar to clear there) but once you get past the visual upgrade, a lot of those concerns are still big concerns for me.

Hoping we get some insights from Origins fans and how they found the game before I hit the buy button.
The Eurogamer reviewer loved Origins and disliked DA2.

Thank god I will have something to play soon. These recent release of games is doing nothing for me. Can't wait to get back into the dragon age world.

Good job bioware!

We're in the exact same boat.

I don't think anyone, even the biggest bioware hater, would have expected something worse than da2.

My personal expectations always were for a decent, enjoyable game, still worse than DA:O (mostly because of combat) and another wasted occasion for bioware to return to the former glory.

If I had to summarize, this sounds like a pass (for now) to me...This has just been an insane year for RPGs, and this one is just going to have to wait until I can get to it. Having played many post-EA Bioware RPGS, seems that a lot of the stuff I don't like still exists...

Not shown is one additional passive, and the two final abilities at the end of the tree :(

These are a bit different than the "card" picture we saw with 4 abilities on it, which was for the multiplayer reaver character

Yeah, I'm really worried about those too. It sounds more and more like I'll pass on this one.

FWIW, I gave Dragon Age 2 a 5/10 for Wired back when it came out. It's almost hard to believe this one was made by the same people.
I feel the biggest difference is that instead of trying to totally reinvent a game in 15-18 months with no room for failure or experimentation, they instead had almost four years to do the same.

HOW IS THAT EXPLAINED IN LORE?

I giggled.

I'm sorry but I need to ask. Are we getting a DA2 or ME3 endings where decisions didn't amount to anything in the end?
This is one of the reasons we're waiting on our review - Kirk wants to test out different choices and see. A week and a half is really not a lot of time with this game.

Glad to hear about story and characters being great. I don't care much for RPG combat but exploring the world and its inhabitants should be good enough.

I choosen PC because I wanted to play with tactical view but these are not encouraging :(

While I am sad that we won't see a city at the scale of Athkala, isn't Denerim also only limited to a marketplace?

Happened because of the 2.0 patch. Someone said Sony and ea are working on a fix before it gets released.

2.02 just got released, which was a stability patch. Hopefully that fixed that.

Kotaku guy said he played it on a colleague's PS4 that had been updated to 2.01 am the freeze was gone

There are little bits of it here and there (the alienage, various side streets) on different maps but it's all very small scale, hardly a spawling metropolis. Mostly the marketplace.

Edit: Oh, and really glad DAI is getting positive attention. I was kind of a shoe-in anyway given that I loved Origins and didn't hate DA2, but it's good to see the devs getting some critical recognition for their work.

So... About the plot critique. I enjoyed the world building of DA:O and the lore entries in DA II. Am i going to be disappointed or is the plot critique more for the fact that the main plot is kinda cliche?

Based on the reviews, i really don't know what to expect. Everything seems to be so vague.
