Sega very happy with Valkyria Chronicles' Steam launch

That means we can expect an HD JSRF remake with four-player online, redone level design, a "JSR" mode (with JSR controls/time attack approach) followed by a new JSR sequel

Has it been dethroned at all today?

It was actually in third for most of the day, behind Football Manager (European sales drive FBM way up early in the day Ameri-time) and Calladoody. Interesting to see it surge as the evening sets in, and specifically as workin' folk get home and read the news.

No doubt, right after Shenmue 3, 4 and 6 release in the New Yu Suzuki TRIOLOGY package.

I said this in another thread but I'll say it here too. I just hope if this leads to further ports that sell well too. I think this game got a boost because its the first Sega port in a while and people are hoping for their preferred port to come next. My worry is I think the Sega fanbase is very fractured in terms of what franchises they are backing and there will be inevitable disappointment for some at whatever gets put out next. "I don't want this why not Vanquish/Shenmue/Bayonetta/JSRF/Virtua Fighter etc first".

I just hope the momentum can be maintained so that Sega aren't put off once again by a future port bombing. Especially if its a game from a less traditionally PC genre, Sega were surprisingly savy with this choice of game. No one saw it coming and yet it made perfect sense when you think about it.

Nice. I really liked this game. And I enjoyed Welkin and Alicia's relationship and the voice acting.

I just hope they can make something as good as Valkyria Chronicles again, some day.

it helps that its a "anime game", and steam users love those. Bayonetta would do better than Valkyria, im 100% positive. Vanquish probably not. Virtua Fighter 5 most certainly not. Skies of Arcadia would do gangbusters

True I think the anime factor can't be discounted either.

I wonder if the west could get PSO2 if their PC sales were good enough...
PSO2 is free to play though. I highly doubt that Sega will be able to maintain a smooth flow of localized content to NA and EU. I doubt they'd come up with an appropriate launch strategy for the NA and EU markets, opting to just redo the bland JP launch which just won't cut it in these territories.

Hopefully this will encourage SEGA to release more console titles for the PC.
Hope they'd be up to HD-ifying their glorious PSP, Xbox/PS2/GC era games.

SEGA, so VC4 on PS4, XBONE and PC right? Of course, the demo comes with VC2/3 HD collection. ;)

Well deserved.
Now bring on Vanquish.
And sign Platinum for Vanquish 2, PS4/XB1/PC

But with all due respect, curse you Sega for region locking this title to outside of Japan.
I wanted to give you my money. Really.

Nice! I did my part, had it on PS3 years ago, but I still bought this the second it was announced.

Chiming in with everyone else that hopefully at the very least, it opens Segas eyes to the possibility of porting stuff like VC2, maybe translating VC3, and perhap somehow, Shenmue1/2, and Skies of Arcadia. Its alot to ask for, but damn, anything seems possible now.

Such a feel good story all around. A forgotten but beloved gem gets new life, with extra care, on the PC, and consumers rediscover and enjoy it in numbers. I can only hope this success shows publishers what porting a cult classic to PC and putting in the effort when doing so can bring.

If they ever decide to continue the franchise don't you think re-releasing the second and third game could actually have a negative effect on its popularity?

Not only do most people agree on them not being up-to-par with the first game, they are also visually inferior, which would be even more apparent in high resolution.

Sega has so much to localise and port on PC , that at this point i'd just want to bring anything from the portfolio that isn't on pc already ...

Your move , sega ... i mean how many franchises do you have , the pc players want them all !

Ignoring visuals, most non Japanese people never played VC3 ,so where's this consensus coming from?

I won't hold my breath for this or Vanquish 2 or Yakuza 5/0/ishin getting localised.

Vanquish!!!

I agree, Vanquish

Might as well add in cops to maraud you throughout each level. A whole lot of work they'd have to do, and I'll bet SEGA hasn't even kept the source code. :(

What happened with NiGHTs and JSR not selling up to expectations has less of a chance of happening again. Those games are divisive on GAF and elsewhere; many people who could have bought NiGHTs most likely heard about the control issues and held off thanks to experts' opinions. And JSR still draws extreme views due to its control scheme and style of play.

Even Super Monkey Ball, which also plays like an arcade title, would have less negativity surrounding it, and would have greater pull than we might expect. SEGA needs to market and promote word-of-mouth based on what makes these games pop out. For example, Vanquish is a Mikami game, why not say "From the Director of The Evil Within"? More "niche" examples like Yakuza most likely will not perform at VC's level, given the variables that have lead this release to success in triple-A season, but they still have an untapped audience begging for more (aka Sleeping Dogs fans).

VF5 could be a tough sell. SEGA could do a pre-release beta for streamers and active players to go in, test the netcode, and show off to viewers how much content a port of Final Showdown would contain. And Skies would be like taking candy from a baby.

If they ever decide to continue the franchise don't you think re-releasing the second and third game could actually have a negative effect on its popularity?
That's one reason I'd advocate not releasing them until after the sequel performs well, but others will disagree and say the up-port effort's worth its risks. Even the best PR can get overwhelmed when VC4 comes out and people whine at SEGA wondering if they've missed out on two side-stories.

vanquish sucks, would much rather see a PC port of Bayonetta so it can finally be played all the way through with a decent framerate.

I wasn't a fan of vanquish. I like the idea of it but it just didn't play too fun for me. Really I'd just rather see sega remaster the old classics, they simply don't make them like they used to, true SEGA remasters of the classics will beat out whatever shell of an organization they have coming up with games since the dreamcast died.

I wonder if the west could get PSO2 if their PC sales were good enough...

I doubt players in the west would like the way PSO 2 treats its cosmetic items. We're used to seeing what we want at a price and buying it, they have a stupid lottery system where you may or may not get what you want reguardless of how much money you may spend. Shit like that will kill a game dead. It's doubly screwed because the people who bothered to play the game with patches and stuff will likely not play the western version because of how badly they've been burned playing localized versions of the game compared to the native language version. That and by now, they've probably invested thousands, if not tens of thousands of hours into the game. Then there is also the metric ton of cross-promotional events they do with other IP's that probably cant be done because of potential licensing issues.

Eh, this isn't quite accurate. There's a lot of hate (a *lot* of it) on Steam for The Animes, too, just like on consoles and in American culture. It's just that there's also a significant Japanese-content-loving contingent on Steam which has been grossly under-served for years, and so giving them content results in enormous sales, especially when it's something as good and solidly ported as VC1.

Valkyria just took the top revenue spot on Steam again.

Been like that for over an hour, in fact. And given that AC:U and Freddy's changed places, that's a steady hold it has on the top spot.

(Actually a little surprised to see AC:U climbing again now, tbh, given how it's been getting dogged on all day. I wonder if it might actually topple VC at some point tonight?)

If a new game ever happens I think the best move would be to give it a non-numbered title. That way it would be an easier sell to people who only played the first game as well as people who are new to the franchise.

At this point I'd replace "ask" with "pay". People are telling Sega what they want with their wallets and in a grand fashion too.

Maybe we'll see a $10 or $15 port of Valkyria Chronicles II and a translation of III. I'm only into chapter 3 of VC and I want more.

I want Skies of Arcadia.

SEGA PLEASE!

Skies of Arcadia is one of my favorite games ever and probably the game that single-handedly got me into RPGs.

I don't really need a remaster. The battle system aged *really* badly.

Although, if they edited it so that every character doesn't "Moons, give me strength!" with *every* spell, I might be more receptive...

Alternatively, label the first three games the Gallian Trilogy and then move to subtitles for the new games, just to keep nomenclature clean and tidy.

Holy shit! Ok, selling more than CoD on PC is one thing since CoD isn't really that huge on Steam. AC:Unity, OK, not a lot of good press there. But Football Manager? Football Manager? If there is one thing I've learned about PC gaming from having been a member of Steam for only a few years is that most PC gamers on Steam play three games: DOTA2, TF2 and Football Manager. It outselling Football Manager to me is more shocking than it outselling Borderlands, CoD and AC:Unity. Played it on PS3, btw. Fantastic game if you can get over the flying pig.

Besides the obvious Sega games there are other obvious games that will sell well like:

Easy money. SE is essentially doing this with FF XIII series, won't be surprise if they end up putting up FFXV.

Hey, cool. VC was a fun, unique game. I just beat it last year, I believe it was.

And I see a lot of Vanquish talk in this thread. I beat that yesterday mostly due to NeoGAF hype. It was pretty good, too. Not the greatest thing in the world, but pretty fun.
