Dragon Age: Inquisition Review Thread

I'd honestly rather have had city elf than dalish (or at least had City elf be the warrior/rogue option, while the keeper's assistant could be a mage), but working Orlais' city elves into the chantry at the beginning of the game would be...interesting, given the results from the last book.

One of the reviews did mention that there was never really an option to 'be' Dalish, as opposed to surrendering your personality to the Inquisition.

While I'm sure it happens for all of the races to some extent (given that the Qunari choices don't follow the Qun, and the dwarves are part of the Carta, IIRC), that would really hamper the elf perspective.

Still gonna be fun to demand people call me the new herald as a female qunari mage on 2nd playthrough, tho.

While I agree to some extent, you'd have problems working in all the various options for backgrounds and dovetail into the same prologue, as opposed to Origins' separate prologues.

After having read a few reviews, this element stands out as my biggest negative, unfortunately. It doesn't sound like we'll be roleplaying this character so much as steering their decisions. It's really not the same. Roleplaying a specific character from a specific perspective was a big part of what made Origins so replayable - my dwarf noble and elven mage saw the world in two very different lights. I really hope there's still a little room for that sort of roleplaying in Inquisition, but unfortunately it sounds like every race is basically just human.

Oh wow. How could i've missed that, thanks :P Should've googled it but when i saw that attribute screenshot i really thought we could put points. Thanks!

Attribute points increase automatically when you level up but you can increase them manually by equipping gear with attribute bonuses. You can also add modifications to your armour via crafting to add even more.

I can see that the Champion has some ridiculous tanking skills, and someone in my party is absolutely getting that Rift vortex spell because those tend to be quite overpowered against anything that can't resist CCs (especially if you can Champ-block them after pulling them somewhere, sounds gross if there's no FF enabled). Whether I have my dwarf be said Champion or make him a 2H blender I haven't decided yet.

I've rolled Mage in both DA1 and DA2, so I'll probably grab something different. Thinking an Archer (which I guess would be a Rogue, except I use bows). I like ranged classes a lot, so that seems like the best way through. As for other decisions, it'll be a Lady Elf. I loved playing an Elf in DA:O and have definitely started playing females in my RPGs now because it tends to be really interesting and different from all the male protagonists that dominate most other games.

Think I'm gonna begin as a Warrior for the first time. Cliched .. yes .. but still.

My DA1 main was rogue, Hawke was mage .. so its time for a Warrior naturally.

I was a mage in DA:O and a 2H Warrior in DA2. Thinking I'm gonna go back to my roots and be a magic wielder once more in Inquisition. The effects look so cool!

I think that I'm going to play as a female elven mage. The other option was Qunari mage, but after reading The Masked Empire I kinda want an elf to rule the Inquisition.

As for companions to bring along, I think Iron Bull will be my main warrior and Dorian the other mage. I'll have to decide between Varric and Sera for my rogue.

Even though I'm not a big fan of the romance options available to me (being a straight guy roleplaying a straight guy) for this game I do think most of the companions are looking mighty interesting. Will be hard to pick just 3 of them D:.

My thoughts as well; I never play a warrior as they're usually the most boring class, but this time...

That said, Knight Enchanter looks fuckawesome.

Just finished watching the Giantbomb quick look ..

and yeah the absence of healing spells seems really weird. Especially considering you're running into random combat during exploration .. also .. DAT DRAGON !

I usually play rogues in RPGs but the mage is looking very interesting as well. Kind of leaning towrds mage atm but it depends on how useful rogues are out of combat (lockpicking etc).

Ugh rogue or mage, I can't decide. I love the idea of a sassy female dwarven dual-wielding rogue and my favourite Wardens were all rogues. On the other hand, playing mage was unexpectedly fun in DA2 and it looks great in DAI.

Do we know if we can wear heavy armor as a mage? Knight Enchanter looks really fun but I've never really been a traditional mage in these games. I like wearing heavy armor and hitting people with a sword.

Mine was a not-so-sassy commoner femrogue, don't know what Alistair saw in her.

Should I be worried about the issues (crashes) regarding the PS4 version, or can I assume that the latest firmware update and the day 1 patch solves all of this? Was thinking about pre-ordering this, but this is basically the only thing holding me back.

The firmware fixed the issue, its assumed the .02 version of the firmware was released specifically because of some game related issues.

Some outlets have put notes at the end of their reviews stating the stability improvements after patching.

That's all I needed to hear! Pre-order is now placed!

Also glad to see that Bioware has somewhat redeemed themselves. Here is hoping that this is the start of an EA-redemption.

I hate the bit in these games where I second guess my choices a ridiculous amount. So, I rolled a human dual wield rogue - thinking of going Tempest - and I'm already wondering about other choices. Even with Access, I might wait for a few people to get further and see what's most fun. (A lot of it is also about the other characters, obviously. I prefer to wade in while having set up rules for teammates, so I need a good balance (long range rogue, mage, warrior) if I'm playing that class...) ANYWAY.

God it's pretty. God it's fun.

I'm a Dragon Age noob but this looks very interesting.
Just a quick question: what does this game play like? Is it 3rd person action RPG like Skyrim / Souls ? Or is it turn based party RPG ? Or something else ?

Have to admit, these reviews are higher than what I was expecting.

Third person real time RPG, so you don't have to worry about turns.

Damn guys! With all the recent fails of AA titles I was very sceptical of this one too, but it seems it is a worthy successor to the good old DA1. I bought it.... Another game on the origin :(

Have you ever played Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic? MMO's? If so, think of it a bit like that but more action oriented. It's a third person RPG action game. You can use regular attacks with presses of a button on a controller and special skills by selecting them from a list.

Though if you aren't planning on playing on easy/medium you'll have to use the tactical combat mode. Basically whenever a combat encounter is going to begin the screen freezes and you can freely move the camera around the battlefield and give orders to allies (aka use this skill on this enemy, attack this guy, etc...). This turns it into more of a strategy game vs just regular action RPG. But you don't have to worry too much about this mode unless you're planning in playing on hard/insane.

So to answer your question, not a turn based rpg but more like Skyrim/dark souls. But the latter two play very differently from each other so expect this one to also be a different beast.

This is the first game that has compelled me to play something other than a human, went with an Elf for my first attempt as a Mage. Should be interesting to see what kind of reactions I will be gettig in the world.

Do we have all the skills for Rift Mage yet? Is it any good?

Polygon article about the character writing in Inquisition (apologies if already posted). Aargh, it's this sort of stuff that makes me even more hyped for next week, if that's even possible at this point.

The article makes some good points, but also lays on a thick layer of "in the old days this wasnt possible" crap.

At 80.000 words DA:I pales in comparison to the close to 800.000 words of PS:T, released 15 years ago, and still considered by many the best story driven crpg ever made.

So no, its not some magic next gen tech thats allowing for deep characters and story, and no the writers of crpg's made years ago were not inept at their craft, Gaider and company are not at the top of some imaginary evolution in crpg stories.

They do good work, but good writing has been present in many crpg's for many, many years now.

Are we doing EA Access trial impressions in here?

I've replayed the opening level (tutorial level) a few times trying out different classes. I won't be playing the full game on X1 so I'm not going to advance past the tutorial level.

I'm loving warrior this time around. Tried human male two-hand first, and it was a blast! The melee combat feels really impactful, screen lightly shakes on strikes and you can swipe with each pull of RT. I was also able to gain a few ability points, getting the ball & chain (MK Scorpion get-over-here device) and a block/parry move. I found it really, really fun.

Tried female elf Archer, archer is cool this time. Its really nice how mobile it is, you can run around the battlefield and played a ranged role, and cloak out of danger when enemies get too close.

I tried mage out switching to Solas the first two playthroughs, and then I made a female human mage for a restart, and I don't know...I'm not really feeling it. Like Angry Joe said in his preview, you are rooted while casting, and you just hold down RT. Kinda lose that visceral effect of attacking with a warrior, mage is really ranged and sort of docile to play. I know some of the skills in the trees are insane though, especially Knight Enchanter. KE will probably make playing as a mage better given that you can melee and get in the fight. I usually play mage in DA games, but I dont know feels a tad too ranged for me this time.

I also played a bunch as Cassandra, and I have to say, sword n board might be my favorite of all the classes I tried. Its just insanely fun, especially with the ability to deflect with the shield. The sword animations are really awesome and quick, and again melee feels very visceral with the camera shake and whatnot.

Still need to try duel-wield rogue, but so far I'm 90% sure I'm going to be a warrior, which I've never done in a DA game. It just feels really great this time around. Hopefully this helps those who are sort of undecided on class.
