Dragon Age: Inquisition Review Thread

What a shame it is that nowadays it feels like it's more likely to get a broken PC game rather than a working one on release.

Nowadays? I can't remember a time when that wasn't the case, which is why a lot of people with limited free time opt for the console experience as a controlled configuration.

Can anyone advise if this game would be right for me? I enjoy a good RPG but wasn't hooked on ME (beyond 20 hrs), nor the Fallout series.

Definitely like a good story though, and easily learnable mechanics (nothing too customizable) like FFX, fire emblem 3ds, FF6. Also enjoy good action games like AC4, TLOU, sunset, ratchet series, etc.

And TV shows like the wire and game of thrones.

Have a ps4 and xbone.

Is this like a game of thrones storyline ie a SERIOUS immersive fantasy setting with lots of mature content? And is it something I can pick up and play for 1-2 hrs at a time? I'm also hoping its a game that I play (action!) rather than spending too much time staring at custom menus.

Any advice would be appreciated :)

This is 100% me right now. A few years ago I was all about getting that optimal version (as best as I could do with my retail paycheck at least) but now I just want to pop in the disc or download my game and play. Still, plenty of respect for those with the dedication to get their set-ups running the games at that high level. I'll enjoy your screenshots.

Yes and no. DA and ME play super serious stories and DA in particular is an incredibly dark world, but there is a lot of humor because if it was all serious, it would be too much after a few hours. For myself (and plenty of others) it's the perfect balance.

And if DA:I works like the previous games, you can play on normal and not put a huge amount of thought into leveling and play all real-time. You may decided to put more time into leveling and item customization, or you may decide to drop the difficulty, but you should find a balance that works for you.

However, it looks like this game needs at least 60-70 hours to beat on an average first run. Not sure if that might be too intimidating, considering your preferences.

Your tastes aren't dissimilar to mine, and I suspect you'd really enjoy the game. Of course I can't speak from experience here, since I'm only basing my assessment of DA:I on reviews and the general consensus that it's a love letter to fans of DA:O. Do you enjoy the character interaction in Fire Emblem? Or are you just skipping through to the next battle? If you like exploring the dynamic between characters against a fantasy backdrop then I suspect you'll love Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Sorry if this is common knowledge, but does this game have micropayments for in-game currency, etc?

Thinking of recent EA and Ubisoft games, not to mention Bioware games, it seems likely that they'd have something like this nestled in there.

I'm tempted to drop my Origins play through right now in the middle because I'm a sucker for fresh tech and Inquisition looks luscious.

Yes, for multiplayer only. It's similar to what they did in ME3.

I played and completed both Dragon Age games but I'm not sure how I feel about this one. It looks gorgeous for the most part, especially the faces and instantly dragged me back into the world after years of being out of it. I know many will not agree and maybe I am simply remembering it incorrectly (I'm almost sure I am) but I feel like I enjoyed II's combat more. The thing I realized most with my time with the game is how great it feels to be in a Bioware world once again- it feels like it has been a much larger gap than a few years. The writing is as good as I had been seeing people say and that is refreshing as well, I've missed giving a damn about what is happening to characters on screen. Still sorting it all out in my head but I'm leaning towards this over Far Cry.

Should mention I have run into numerous bugs, more than I ever did in the first four sequences of Unity- but the game still has a patch yet to be deployed and these are not unusual for these games anyway. The most egregious case being my attempt to travel to a new area ending in a black screen with my HUD still active and an odd humming noise taking over anything else coming from my speakers.

I'm still half asleep so i apologize if this makes no sense at all. Does anyone know if my EA access membership carries over to other regions marketplaces?

I hope you reported these bugs to Bioware :O

Afaik in multiplayer you can use in-game currency or real money to purchase "loot chests" that give you potions, gear, classes etc. Very similar if not same as in Mass Effect 3 and what I have heard you could totally play ME 3 MP without real money payments and not get left behind in performance.

Well, nowadays in addition to every other day too in the history of PC and console gaming, I suppose

LOL!

Because there were no problems with AC:Unity on console, or battlefield 4, or Driveclub, or Titan fall, or Skyrim on PS3...

So far, with the games I've bought this year (which are a lot) I've had exactly zero issues on PC (with the exception fo a few early access titles, which is to be expected and didnt' stop my enjoyment of them).

The game isn't even out yet. There is no day one patch out, and no driver update yet.

Hell on the Xbone it doesn't look very good, there are frame rate drops, glitches with animations and pop-in is at Battlefield 4 on consoles level:

How about we wait until release to declare this a mess on any platform, including PC.

Getting back to the theme of this topic, I think this will be a good opportunity for players to confirm which Reviewers to trust or are more aligned to your tastes.

For example, very few of them reported the slowdowns during cutscenes, or the multiple collision detection issues, the mouse losing focus on the choice wheel, etc. Several actually only started acknowledging them on side comments, yet are not referred in their reviews. Until this day, I'm not even sure if there are show- stopper bugs/'unfinishable' side quests or not.

Also, only a handful mentioned that the main story is not particularly great. Not sure if that's the case or not, but would be another parameter to use.

The latter's opinion based. The former...who knows? Maybe they were assured before writing that the bugs would be patched before players ever actually started their games with a patch.

I didn't mean to give the impression that console gaming was bug-free bliss, just that it doesn't involve endless hours of wondering whether some other driver or setting would improve matters. Every piece of software has its share of flaws, and some are more egregious than others. The meta-game of aligning the pieces to be minimally faulty is something I once engaged in with gusto, but now I'm content to hear from others what the state of a game is, reassured by the knowledge that their configuration is identical to mine.

Here's hoping that DA:I will be in relatively good shape following the obligatory day one patch.

Yes, that's why I mentioned that it would be a good time to see to which reviewers your tastes/opinion align the best.

As for the 2nd point.. I would assume that if you are a reviewer (and hence giving a verdict) you would actually make a point to fully disclose the issues, take it in consideration for the score (if you give one) but at the same time mention that the developers have promised a release patch. At which point you would get back and update your review accordingly.

That would be more honest than trust everything is going to be fine. This BTW, applies to all games, it's not specific to Inquisition.

Plot is overrated.

On the technical front, I don't think I saw anything during my EA Access period. So if there are problems, they're not universal.

It let me pay - was missing the "copy and paste" step, I just disabled the extension. However, it still gave me an error AFTER returning from paying with pay pal saying

(Your order couldn't be processed with the selected payment method.)

=/

I couldn't pay with the Mecian Hola/Paypal method no matter what I did. I finally gave up and used my CC/Debit Card and it worked first try.

I don't see anything on my Mexican purchased version about a pre-load (although I did get an email about a $10 GC off on further purchases tho).

We've know for awhile that in order to unlock a character in MP, you need to craft/find their armor. Hopefully it doesn't take too much to craft them.

I'm just sucker for detailed info like this :)

Anyone have links to all the skill trees and specializations? I'd like to link to them in the OT.

Dawg, get on this. Our Lord of hype Shinobi needs your help! :D

I think Origin preload begins in 25 minutes.

Yep, 20 as I'm writing this. If any European needs to know how just hit me and I PM details.

Edit:
But since it's not complete, the others can be found here:
*Specializations
*General trees

For some reason I don't like those particular galleries. They are incomplete, some even out of date and just low quality crops from videos :(

I need a demo. This looks really fun, but im not the best at RPGS

Not sure that we'll be getting a demo for this, but there are difficulty levels in case you just want to experience the world and story and not get too frustrated with the combat.

So when does preload for PC begin?

Think I might roll a dwarf assassin for my first playthrough instead of a qunari knight enchanter. Still haven't decided.

I know that other countries may be too foreign at first sight, but come on.. you will be able to install it in English. Just like every other game created in this continent, and sold via Origin, Steam, GOG, etc.

Apparently, the preload will start at 11:00 Central time (in aprox 3:30 hrs)

yeah I don't doubt that, was joking around. I don't even see any indication on my origin profile that it is the spanish version, pretty sure it's universal.

Well he does say that heads pop back when he disables SLI, but single 980 can't run game on Ultra @ 1080p60.

You would think a single 980 could roll 1080p60 easy enough, it totally blitzes the recommended specs by miles.... and he's got an extremely fast i7 in there with memory for days.

AMD has been favoured for this however, NVIDIA need to step up their drivers for their adventurers!

I plan on playing glorious 1440p for at least some of it, good times ahoy!

This is why I have "Meant to be played on X" optimised games as so said another camp only suffers from this practice until Y gets drivers optimised over several weeks. Doesn't benefit consumer in any way.

Will say it again: Can't believe that none of the major gaming sites have jumped on it, and created an indepth series of articles about all the talents/specs. Sounds like an obvious way to bring tons of visitors. And even better, a Char planner.

Yes, didn't meant to jump on you specifically, just wanted to clarify that this is an international release and Mexico is not a weird exception or something.

just got my key from GMG, is the preload live? because I cant do it yet (but im in EU so im not sure if its because of that, which would be a dick move if so)

Normally at least (being a 7970 owner) us AMD guys get the short end of the straw with drivers... maybe for once we get a break :P

I'm upgrading in the new year to either a 980 or just a 780 ti, either would be a big step up from my current 3GB card (want at least a 4GB, bare minimum now I reckon).

1 minute until Origin preload!

Edit: It's live!

not for me (europe), lol not only is the release later but the pre load is later aswell? and people wonder why most people just want games on steam :/

I think choosing a race, gender and class are the biggest dilemma most of us are facing right now. Right after simply waiting fo rthe game!

Hmm, cool, I thought they would send the keys a bit later for us in EU.

Anyone else bought from GMG and got their key? I might buy from there, my main complain was that I wasn't sure I would get the key before the release here in Europe.

Cool VPN for preload worked. Though the speeds are pretty terrible (I have closed the VPN). Could just be my internet at the moment.

TUESSSDAAYYY!

I understand your thoughts, but I think that having the option to fix/find any faults yourself is a great thing. Much better than being at the whims of a developer/publisher 100% of the time.

Here is how I PC game nowadays.

Install game.
Play game.
Click optimize in GeForce Experience
Enjoy.
