Before Crisis Final Fantasy VII

Bc-logo.jpg

It's a prequel to FFVII. How come you've never played this? It was released in 2004... on phones. Yes, regular ass phones (though Japan at that time was the leader in phone tech). I think it may have been exclusive to one particular carrier as well. Imagine if Square made a prequel to Chrono Trigger exclusively for Verizon.

You got to play as the Turks. THE TURKS. The art for this game is also pretty awesome.

Tabata said in an interview several years ago that he would like to remake the game for 3DS. I don't think it's going to happen.

Rockman - The Powaaaaar Battu! Seriously you have to hear the title screen, it's a crack up. Basically it's a one-one-one fighting game.

I wonder how obscure it is considering it came with the Mega Man Anniversary Collection, but speaking of Mega Man:

Heck, I'm willing to call the entire Star Force series obscure, but most of all there's this: a PC game with no music, giant sprites, and only 3 Robot Masters.

To all the people in this thread saying they never got the chance to play and go through Ghost Babel...man, you guys missed out. Everyone saying it was the best GBC game ever is totally right. It was fanTAStic. I honestly recommend trying to find it on ebay or in a secondhand store somewhere. Somehow, I managed to keep my copy of MGS:GB that I got back in the day. Most games did not survive the "I want to buy new games so let's go to funcoland" purge of my teen years.

With so many of these obscure games on various dead phone platforms, are there any emulator projects trying to preserve them? Super Mario Bros isn't in much danger of being lost to the ether, but a lot of these phone games seem much more endangered.

the majority of sony's mobile games are obscure, but i'mma highlight lemmings: ape escape because that makes a lot of sense

this game got direct 2 sequels (+1 game that may have been intended as a sequel but didn't wind up as one) and sold more than a million copies just in the us

WOAH! Never heard of this one! Stick it on the Vita, I'll take it!

I had this.

Same! Not only was it hugely disappointing because it was some b.s. educational game, but the questions were really hard for a kid in elementary school. I remember trying to use an encyclopedia to answer the questions in hopes that there was a real Mario game buried deeper within.

Pokémon Best Wishes: Intelligence Training Pokémon Big Sports Meet!

A Pokémon educational game, based around the Black and White anime, exclusive to the Sega Advanced Pico Beena, an edutainment console exclusive to Japan. Nothing more obscure than that.

At least those were on successful consoles:

Rockman EXE WS (Wonderswan Color)

Rockman & Forte (Wonderswan)

They're not the worst games...but certainly not the best Rockman games.

A damn shame to. Since all konnami needs to do is release it on VC for 3DS. When snake was added to smash and 9/10 people didn't realize he had a exclusive title on gbc you know something is messed up. Especially since it's easily one of the if not the best gbc game.

This.

I also give a vote to this game:

gunhazard.jpg

Front Mission Gun Hazard is a spin-off of the tactics based Front Mission series.

I loved this game (think Contra Hard Corps RPG with mechs/humans and a mature/cohesive story) and it would of been awesome if they had two separate flavors for the series through the years.

Jack Bros, a Virtual Boy game starring Jack Frost, Pyro Jack, and Jack the Ripper from the Megaten series may count. It's also the first game with those demons to ever come out West.

I just wanted to say this is a fun ass thread. A lot of games I've never heard of, some I have, and a lot of unreleased games. Awesome thread and thanks everyone who's contributed.

Punchball2.gif

Punch Ball Mario Bros. (パンチボールマリオブラザーズ) is a game created by Hudson Soft for the PC-8801 in August 26, 1984. It also ran on the PC-6001mkII, NEC PC-6601, FM-7, and Sharp X1. It is very similar to Mario Bros., but with a new object named the "Punch Balls" that could now be thrown to stun enemies. Once stunned, the hit enemy could be hit like normal. The details of the licensing of this game aren't clear, but Punch Ball Mario Bros. is probably one of the earliest licensed Mario games. It is unknown why Hudson Soft was permitted the rights to and chose to make the game. Hudson also produced two other Mario games for Japanese home computers: Mario Bros. Special and Super Mario Bros. Special.

Mario Bros. Special (マリオブラザーズ スペシャル) is a game developed by Hudson Soft in 1984. The game ran on the NEC PC-6001mkII, NEC PC-6601, NEC PC-8801, FM-7, and Sharp X1. About two years later after Mario Bros. Special and Punch Ball Mario Bros. were released, Hudson released Super Mario Bros. Special.

The game is again not a straight port of Mario Bros, but an original Arcade-style platformer with adjustments to the game's graphics and sounds. There are four different screens similar to Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr.. The stages usually involve Mario figuring out how to progress to the top of the screen, and some levels feature unstable platforms that shake if jumped one (also tripping the enemy). Dollar signs and rare rings are also collected rather than coins. The stages repeat in the same set and get progressively harder, with more enemies and obstacles.

Super Mario Bros. Special (スーパーマリオブラザーズ スペシャル) was developed by Hudson Soft and released in 1986 for the NEC-PC8801 and Sharp X1 series of Japanese PCs. Special was the first Nintendo-licensed follow-up to Super Mario Bros., released shortly before Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. Two years earlier, Hudson Soft had released Punch Ball Mario Bros. and Mario Bros. Special, which were both based on the original Mario Bros.

While superficially very similar to the original Super Mario Bros., the game features original new levels and lacks a screen-scrolling mechanism. When a player reaches the end of a screen, the screen turns blank and loads the next part of the level. Jumping and running physics also differ from the original, providing a more challenging experience than Super Mario Bros. Adding difficulty is the fact that the stage time is faster than in the original game. Returning was Mario's Hammer from Donkey Kong, alongside a variety of past foes from earlier arcade Mario titles, and new exclusive items.

Couldn't agree more. Amazing game. Was my favorite game to play on the go as a kid.

An old emulator called KEmulator exists for JAVA mobile games on PC. I don't know much about it though.

The real loss with mobile emulation at the moment is N-Gage, both the original mobiles and the N-Gage 2.0 service. I don't really know if anything was ported from the N-Gage phones and the only N-Gage 2.0 game that I know was ported elsewhere was Resident Evil Degeneration.

You can at least collect games for the N-Gage phones whereas with N-Gage 2.0 games you have to use a whole bunch of hacks on Nokia S60 phones to play the games these days.

As an aside, since Metal Gear Solid GBC keeps coming up and Metal Gear Solid Mobile has been mentioned, how about Metal Gear Solid Touch for the iPhone?

Did you know theres a Conker game for the gameboy color?

250px-Conkerspockettalesboxart.jpg

or how about the Sonic racing game for the PSP? It even got a sequel

Amazing:
"Nintendo designer Yamashita Takayuki attributes his work on Talent Studio as having been foundational to his eventual work on the Mii."

The Polygon Studio in the same series was also the inspiration for WarioWare! : D

This thread only juuuust scratched the surface of insanely obscure Mario games.

-and a metric fuckton of medal redemption machines (if those count).

I know some examples have been given already, but I'd definitely say most of the older Japanese mobile games are the winner in this regard.

Before Crisis Final Fantasy VII is a big one and there's also Dirge of Cerberus Lost Episode -Final Fantasy VII- although that did get released in the west if I'm not mistaken?

And there's a ton of Shin Megami Tensei games like this. I've got no idea how good these are but there's an SMT2 side-story, an If... bonus chapter, a Jack Bros. sequel (as if that game wasn't obscure enough), a Persona 3 prequel starring Aegis, two Persona 2 side-games with one of them being an Eternal Punishment sequel and loads more. It's crazy and there really isn't a lot of info on these on the internet.

What could be worse than Quest 64? How about a GBC entry?
Have you played the game? Quest Fantasy Challenge is actually an alright game. It's not related to the N64 game at all, either -- it's actually a clone of the pretty good early '80s arcade game Mr. Do, except with the Quest 64 license. Odd, but it probably makes for a more fun game than the N64 game...
